In 2015, the leading ginger consuming markets were India (32%), Indonesia
(11%), Nepal (9%), Nigeria (8%), and China (5%), together accounting for
approximately 65% of global consumption. These countries were also
amongst the leading producers in the global ginger market.
From 2007 to 2015, according to market research conducted by IndexBox,
global ginger consumption increased by healthy +7.1% annually. The highest
annual growth rates of ginger consumption between 2007 and 2015 were
registered in India, with +9.8% growth, Indonesia and Nepal, with +5.2%
and +4.2% growth, respectively.
With nearly 790.6 thousand tonnes of ginger consumed in 2015, India became
the world's leading ginger consuming country. Per capita ginger consumption
in India was estimated at 0.6 kg/head, two times higher than the global
average (0.3 kg/persons).
The highest levels of ginger consumption were registered in Nepal (7.8
kg/head), Nigeria (1.1 kg/head) and Indonesia (1.0 kg/head). China (0.1
kg/head) had the lowest volumes of ginger consumption.
