1) QuieroAyudar is an Argentine non-profit that connects citizens who want to volunteer with other non-profits to help communities.
2) The author proposes adding gamification elements like experience points, challenges, levels and leaderboards to increase engagement on the QuieroAyudar platform and motivate more altruistic actions.
3) Players would be assigned roles as donors, volunteers or non-profits and earn points for donations or volunteer hours to level up over seasons, with leaderboards to encourage competition. The goal is to make volunteering and charity more fun and rewarding through game mechanics.
2. TheOrganization
QuieroAyudar (IWanna Help)isan argentine non-profitorganizationthat aimsto
serveas a nexus between other non-profitsand citizens whoarewillingto lenda
helpinghand intheircommunities.
They offera location-based servicethat providesaccurate informationon delivery
points for donations which letsthemeach those inneedin a veryefficientway.
They alsoserveas a link betweenvolunteers and othernon-profitsso that theyget
intouch and start workingtogether.
3. Gamifying Altruism
I stronglybelieve thatGamificationcanhelp increasethe useofQuieroAyudar.org’saltruistism
platform.Thisis themain goalwearelookingtoaccomplish.
The mainchangethatshouldbeintroducedtothecurrentplatformwill be to askuserstocreate their
ownlogin informationso thattheycanbeclearlyidentified andtracked.
Threekindsofusers/playerswill bedefined:
• Donors:whowill donatephysicalgoodsas theyalreadydo.
• Volunteers:whowill volunteer theirowntime.
• Non-Profits:whowill serveas Moderatorsandwill benefitfrombothDonors’andVolunteers’
actions.
4. PlayerTypes
This gamified solution is targeted to two main player types:
• Achievers: by gamifyingthe altruistic experience, Quiero Ayudar will be providing
additional incentives to this type of players as they will be able to show the world their
actions and their potential to be real heroes.
• Socializer: the system will also provide the players the opportunity to socialize with other
users in order to get to know each other, group together and achieve greater goals by
enrolling in Quests.
There is very little (if any) room for the Killer and Explorer player types.
5. GameMechanics
We propose the use of 4 different Game Mechanics:
XP (Experience Points)
Points will be earned by making donations or volunteering time for social causes.
• Time (measured in “hours”) will be much more valuable than goods by a 5x ratio. For
example: when you volunteer 1 hour of your time, you earn five times the amount of
points earned by donating a can of beans.
• Both Donors and Volunteers will inform their expected actions and No-Profits will act as
moderators, certifying whether they have fulfilled their promises or not. Only then will
points be awarded.
6. GameMechanics
Challenges
In order tofosterteamworkand the search for biggerachievements,
Quests willberegularlylaunched.
Notonlywillthewinners be awardedXPs for theirparticipationin
such missionsbut alsothey willgetthe chance tobecomethe
CommandersoftheGoodwilloftheir territory.
7. GameMechanics
Levels
Levels willbe used to track the progress in the game. They will take the same
format used by the argentine Soccer League, which is divided in several tiers.
By doing this, players and teams willbe able to level up or down according
to their performance. Hence, the game should alsobe divided into seasons.
Badges will be used to show the levels in which a player has already
displayed her skills.
8. GameMechanics
Leaderboards
Their mainpurpose will be to show the progress during the
season and to encourage more altruisticactions amongthe
players.
Relativeleaderboards will beused to avoid demotivation.
