- at production stage
▪ before sowing: crop rotation, soil tillage,
variety selection
▪ after sowing: fertilisation (needs of plants)
▪ before harvest: crop control
▪ during harvest: information of the collecting
centre, separate harvest
▪ after harvest: hackle, allocate and incorporate straw residues
- at acceptance stage
▪ cooperation with farmers
▪ hygiene measures
▪ visual control, retention samples before unloading

• Additional conditions / recommendations
of market partners
• Cereal production in contract farming
often with additional Label „Suisse Garantie“
• Education of the staff (collecting centre)
- sample drawing / size
- visual recognition of infested cereal
• Instructions for the proceeding

Future challenges (1)
• Breeding / List of proposed varieties
• New varieties with better resistance
• EU varieties are less location adapted (critical DON- Values)
• Increase sensitivity of the farmers
• Increasing surface of extensive cereal production without fungicides
• Crop rotation / soil tillage
• Agricultural policy
• Action plan for plant protection products
• Votes on people's initiatives
S. Scheuner / Prevention strategies – a cereal stakeholders’ perspective 17
Future challenges (2)
• Maintain / develop decision support system Fusaprog
• Accuracy
• of the samplings
• of rapid tests
• Analysis costs
• Increasing analysis costs for swiss granum
• Prevent multiple analysis on the same lot
• Imported grain
• EU = +/- harmonized, but not the rest of the countries

Conclusions
• Quality assurance (risk management) proved of value
• Cultivation methods are the most important part of the
value chain between „seed and bread“ with the highest
potential to reduce mycotoxins
• Financial resources for the mycotoxin analysis have to be
use more efficient (no duplication)
• Continue and increase the existing collaboration between
the market partners
• In swiss granum discussions take place, solutions are
found and carried by the market partners
S. Scheuner / Prevention strategies – a cereal stakeholders’ perspective 19
Entire value chain requested
• Efforts of all partners requested to keep the today’s and
future challenges with mycotoxins under control
• This is the only way to produce
• safe food
• safe animal feed
Thank you for your attention
