From 1930 to 1932, Gao Jianfu toured around extensively in the countries
in South Asia. The peculiar form of the insects living in the mountains
areas was an eye-opening experience for the artist. He did many sketches
and made notes of the place of origin and distinctive physical features of
the insects to help him remember the names and their forms for
transformation into paintings later. Inscribed remarks found in this
painting included “Ceylon, Bombay, insects’ wings are like cicada wings,
double horns”, etc.
