1. Women Account for Nearly 30 Percent of Nissan Leaf Sales, Surveys Find
Since its earlier price drop in 2013, the proportion of women who buy brand new Nissan Leafs
from a dealership has increased to 25-30 percent. This number has nearly doubled in the past
couple of months since the price drop, according to The Detroit News, citing reports from
Nissan. Previously, most electric vehicle sales were due to early adopting, heavily tech-oriented
male buyers, but the numbers seem to indicate that the electric Leaf might be moving into
mainstream car sales. The average income and age of Nissan Leaf buyers has also decreased
with the price.
It has been reported that women were initially trepidations when considering electric cars due to
concerns they would be alone and the vehicle would run out of charge. Eric Gottfried, director of
electric vehicle sales and marketing for Nissan North America, was quoted as saying that the
automaker is “seeing a normalization in demographics and geographic footprint of the vehicle.”
In addition to the surge in female buyers, more families and people in their 30s are driving away
from their Nissan dealer in a new Leaf these days, as well.
Besides the recent price decrease, Nissan has been focused on increasing overall value of the
Leaf, as well. The company is in the process of creating a replacement battery rental program.
In late 2012, the automaker introduced a warranty program for the Leaf's batteries that was
good for five years or 60,000 miles. The company has recently replaced a few batteries in hotweather states, such as Arizona. In addition, the company is advertising a $199 per month
lease price, which is less than many Americans spend on gasoline. Most Leafs lease for less
than $300 per month. All of these factors add up to increased value for the company, and many
Leaf sales from Nissan dealers for the past 12 months are based on the value customers get for
their money more than environmental reasons.
Assembled in Tennessee, the Nissan Leaf was one of the first full-electric vehicles that were
marketed in the U.S. A 6.6 kW onboard charger which fully charges the battery in about 4 hours,
using a 220 volt electricity source. The Leaf gets between 100 and 130 km of range per full
charge. The Leaf boasts a large cabin with excellent visibility, which provides good visibility. For
a vehicle of its size, there is ample cargo space, and good access to cargo via the Leaf's
hatchback design. Overall, the Leaf makes a smart choice for an all-electric urban commuter
vehicle.
2. Some auto enthusiasts have been insisting that the electric car is doomed to failure, but Nissan
is having trouble meeting sales demands for the Leaf. The recent shifts toward more
mainstream sales demographics seem to indicate that the Leaf, at least, is here to stay. While
many customers are choosing the Leaf for its environmental qualities, it's possible that the new
price point and the fact that Leaf customers save on gasoline are responsible for the increased
sales and the choice of many female buyers to purchase a new Nissan Leaf.
