2. Forensic Medicine
• The course aims to explore the basic elements of
medicine, science and law as applied to the
investigation of criminal (including death) and
causes of harms (including death), and its
application to the court law
3. Course objective:
1. Learn about the history, development,
organization, services, and function of a forensic
medicine.
2. Learn about the basics of a crime and its sequel.
3. Explore the legal considerations of forensic
medicine
4. Understand how the scientific method is used to
solve forensic problems.

5. Learn about death in relation to a criminal causes
of death.
6. Learn how a medical examiner can identify the
manner, mechanism, cause, and time of death for
a victim using various techniques.
7. learn the four manners of death; natural cause,
homicide, accidental death, and suicide, that a
pathologist looks for when he or she is examining
the deceased
8. Examine how bodies of living organisms begin to
decompose shortly after death and the sequential
stages of decomposition

as temperature can affect the determination
of time and cause of death
10.Understand the importance of autopsy
reports and how to complete them.
11.Learn about the history of drug identification
and toxicology including what exactly
toxicology entails
12.Learn the history of blood which contains
information about blood itself and its use in
forensic medicine.

On completion of this course, the student will be
able to:
1) Describe the main medical, scientific and legal
definitions, concepts, techniques and methods
utilized in forensic investigation;
2) Explain and discuss the principles of medical,
scientific and technical evidence-gathering, the
presentation of such evidence in courts of law and
evaluate and critically analyses the evidential
significance of different evidence types;

3) Describe and discuss the basic mechanisms
whereby natural disease, external trauma, drugs and
poisons cause harm resulting in illness and death and
describe and interpret the changes observed;
4) Illustrate the limitations of medical and scientific
investigation in assisting judicial processes, accident
investigation and in the investigation of human rights
abuses;
5) Examine and explain the underlying principles
governing legal processes, the working of the courts
and medical ethics.
