1. Ketogenic Diet

I. Introduction
A. Hello again Professor Duvall and my fellow classmates. I
chose to do my speechon the Ketogenic Diet, not because its
easy and straight forward but because its safe.
B. I don’t intend to tell you about all of the details about the
Ketogenic Diet, but instead, highlight the major points of the
diet and who it helps as you can keyword it on google and find
abundant information on the Ketogenic Diet.
II. The Ketogenic Diet is a diet has four differentversions of the diet.
A. Three of the versions are for bodybuilders and athletes but by
far, the most helpful and studied is the Standard Ketogenic Diet
denoted by “SKD”.
B. This is a very low-carbohydrate, moderate protein and high-fat
diet. It typically contains 75% Fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs
1. (typically 50 grams of carbs a day).
C. This low-carb diet makes your body burn fat as a source of
energy. It takes about four days on this diet to put your body in
a metabolic state called ketosis.
D. It massively reduces blood sugars levels and insulin.
III. Some of the major illnesses that it helps are:
A. Heart Disease
B. High Blood Pressure
C. High Cholesterol
D. Diabetes
E. Cancer
F. Alzheimer’s Disease
G. Epilepsy
H. Parkinson’s Disease
I. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
J. Brain Injuries

IV. I myself have high triglycerides and am on this diet. This diet with
a supplementof Omega-3 Fatty acids has reduced the
triglycerides by 1800 points.
V. Some positive physical signs that your bodyis in ketosis are
reduced appetite and weight loss. Also,you will see an increase
in focus and energy.
VI. And only initially,
A. the first week or two on the diet; negative signs include
Insomnia, short-term fatigue, short-term decreases in
performance and short-term digestive issues.
B. So, initially if you can break-through to the two week mark on
this diet, you will see the benefits of this diet.
VII. There are hundreds of studies that are detailed about the keto diet
on the web and these studies have been around for over 15 year
or longer.
A. It is safe to say that the general consensus is that this diet is
proven to help millions of people here in the states and around
the world.
B. These studies can be found in forums like The New England
Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology,and
The Journal of Pediatrics.
1. One such study was done by Dr. G.D. Fosterwho did a
randomized trial of a low-carbohydrate diet for obesity.
i. Here are is findings published in the New England
Journal of Medicine, 2003. Sixty-three adults with
obesityfollowed either a low fat or a low carb diet for
12 months. The low fat group was calorie restricted.
The conclusion of the study found that there was more
weight loss in the low carb group 7% as opposed to
the low-fat group 3%, and the differencewas
significant at 3 and 6 months, but not 12. The low carb
group had greater improvements in blood triglycerides
and HDL (good cholesterol),but other biomarkers
were similar between groups.
3. ii. In another study in The Journal of Pediatrics, Dr. S.B.
Sondike (2003)studied the effects ofa low-
carbohydrate diet on weight loss and cardiovascular
risks on overweight adolescents.Thirty overweight
adolescentteenagers were given a either low carb or
low fat diet for twelve weeks. The low carb group lost
2.3 times as much weight and had significant
decreasesin triglyceride and non-HDL cholesterol
levels.
