The Moral Framework I Disagree
The moral framework I tend to personally abide by is act utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is the ethical concept that the actions that lead to the most
pleasure are moral and good, whereas those that lead to pain are an immoral evil (Boss 23). When making decisions, I contemplate the advantages and
disadvantages of each option presented before acting upon it. In addition, I consider those who would possibly be affected by my decision both
positively and negatively. Like utilitarianism, I choose the option with the least amount of negative consequences. I am typically inclined to follow a
selfless framework, however, occasionally I must put myself before others depending on the situation. For example, school is always top priority over
my social life. When I choose my social life over school the consequences are profound. Usually this increases my work load and then leads to painful
amounts of stress.
Capital punishment is an important social justice issue because the United States is the only remaining Western democracy that actively uses it as a
punishment method, and two–thirds of the countries have realized it is immoral (Boss 223). The constitutionality of this issue was questioned in the
Furman v. Georgia Supreme Court case in 1972. The case determined that it was indeed unconstitutional because it contradicts the United States' values
declared in the Constitution by denying civil liberties that are stated in the Eighth and the Fourteenth amendments (ACLU). The Eighth

Importance of Moral Philosophy
A Moral Essay As a human being and as a leader, moral philosophy is very important (Fagothey, 2000; Pojman, 2012). What a leader believes from
a moral and ethical standpoint is often shaped by what that leader was taught growing up. Each person has a set of morals that they learned at some
point in their life. These morals were observed from and taught by parents and other family members, as well as friends, neighbors, teachers, and
others in the community. The goal becomes the reaching of Eudaimonia, or "flourishing." As a person develops through childhood, adolescence, and
young adulthood, that person's moral compass is developed through experiences with virtue ethics, which shape that person's ethical beliefs into what
they equate to in adult life. There have been many experiences that have shaped and developed my moral compass and began my walk down the
path to flourishing. Religious faith has always been the foundation to support my moral beliefs, and it helps me to focus on doing what is right. It
does not mean I am a perfect human being, as I know I have many faults. My simple life has imperfections all throughout it. Any person who is
looking for a virtuous life from an ethical standpoint may struggle with religious questions, but those who are dedicated to a life well–lived will focus
on what they are offering to others as opposed to what others are providing to them (Pojman, 2012). I believe that everyone should be treated with
dignity and respect. However, I

Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development Essay
Kohlberg's theory of moral development consists of six stages within three levels known as preconventional Morality, conventional Morality and
postconventional Morality. Kohlberg calls stage one thinking "preconventional" because children are unable to speak as members of society at this
point. Instead, they see morality as what the adults say they must do. Kohlberg believes that moral development is a process which occurs throughout
the lifespan and does not end at any given time. He is not so much focused on the right or wrong answer but in the reasoning behind the decision
making. Stage one of preconventional morality focuses on obedience and punishment. This stage is most commonly seen in younger children. This is
because children...show more content...
At stage 2, in contrast, punishment is simply a risk that one naturally wants to avoid(Crain). The difference between the two can go unnoticed in a
child. Decisions made by a child around the age of ten can be influenced based upon both stages. It is for this reason that these stages are in the
same level, children in either of these stages speak and make decisions as individuals rather than as members of society. Conventional morality is
level 2 of Kohlberg's theory. Interpersonal relationships is stage 3 and mainly focuses on living up to social expectations. Children and adults in
this stage consider how choices influence relationships. An individual will act to gain approval of others. Peer pressure plays a major role during
this stage. People will do most things to remain loyal to a popular look, lifestyle or group of people in which they need to gain or maintain approval
of. School students are typically influenced by others very often and are surrounded by persuasion which is why it is more likely for teens to fall
under this category. The child/individual becomes aware of the wider rules of society so judgments concern obeying rules in order to uphold the law
and to avoid guilt(McLeod). Stage four in conventional morality revolves around maintaining social order. This is the highest stage most adults will
attain. At this stage people consider society when making judgments and decisions. Typically a

Morality And The Origins Of Morality
Most of the times Nietzsche understands "morality" as the set of values typical of the European society of his days. In this sense, it is safe to say that
Nietzsche opposes morality and that genealogy serves the ultimate goal of undermining it. However, it is legitimate to envision for genealogy a scope
for application which goes beyond the particular morality of 19th century Germans. Accordingly, my claim is that in Nietzsche European morality
represents just one possible form of morality. Nietzsche himself seems to claim that he is focusing his attacks only on a specific instance of morality –
one among possible others. So for example, in the preface to On the Genealogy of Morals he claims that the object of the book is the value of...show

'2 Morals are therefore normative codes according to which we orientate ourselves in the context of different spheres of life.
Assuming that Schacht 's interpretation is correct, I believe that his analysis bear strong similarities with the view of morality I adopted in the first
chapter. On one hand, Schacht's talk of "spheres of life" leads to transcend our often restricted understanding of morality as including simply the
realm of ethical rights and duties, or as being focused on explaining why and how we should act in order to live morally. In Schacht's sense, morality
rather seems to include the mores of the Latin or the ethoi of the Greek. In other words, our family of norms is the set of values we live by in all the
different situations we come across in our existence, including many areas of life that the restricted understanding of morality would not consider as
relevant. Furthermore, to understand these mores/ethoi as moral standards or imperatives to which we have to conform is to understand only a side
aspect of them. In fact, more than simply being moral rules directing our behaviour, these customs constitute our un–reflected habits – that is, the way
in which we automatically express ourselves in a particular context – , often being normative on a very unconscious level.

Moral Development Essay
The moral development of a person's character will have a major impact on society as a whole. If we fail to show children moral responsibility they
in turn will lack the moral and ethical sense of values. The critical importance of the early years remains crucial to all later development. With all the
violence and unsuitable language in film, television, and music today's society poses an even larger threat on children. Moral functioning involves
self–esteem, self–control, and altruistic behavior. It seems as if children are developing at a faster rate than previous generations. If we fail to instill
morals than we may fail to produce children that have the conscience to decide what is right from what is wrong. If children grow up lacking...show

I have designed an experiment that will help determine if girls are more moral than boys. Through the local elementary and junior high schools in
Los Angeles, California I have found 25 girls and 25 boys that range from five to twelve years of age. All the students come from affluent
neighborhoods and are from households that have married parents and they are all Caucasians. During this experiment the first thing that will be done
is to divide the children up according to age and sex. The children will then view videotapes, which are the independent variable, of set–up moral
scenarios and write down what they would do in that particular situation that they had viewed. The dependent variable of this experiment is the moral
outcome. All the participants in this experiment are in a controlled environment. A few of the problems with this experiment are that the group of
students comes from the same background, same area, and all from married parents. There is no diversity in ethnicity or culture. This experiment
may not prove my hypothesis to be correct but it may help to validate whether or not this topic is promising enough to continue on with the research.
If the findings are true and girls are more moral than boys we need to find out why that is. What we can do to change it. What is it that is making
girls more moral? Is it society or the way that the child is raised? Many important questions will arise from this

Moral Compass Essay
Yuebo (Grace) Zhu
I.Introduction
A moral compass is the moral guide on which a person bases his/her decisions and distinguishes what is right from what is wrong. With our moral
compass, we know what rules we should play by. When I was a child, I learnt Chinese traditional wisdom, Confucianism, from my parents and
elementary school. The core of Confucianism is humanity, to be altruistic, upright and courteous within the society, from which I got to know the rules
I should honor. Never cheat. Be kind and honest. Don't do anything that will hurt others. These become the foundation of my moral compass.
As I grow older, I have been introduced to other theories which cast light on the formation of my moral compass....show more content...
According to my moral vision, I make my own code of conduct. First, don't judge. I shouldn't judge others' choices because they have their own
rights to choose freely. Second, don't do anything that will violate others' basic rights. Examples are as covering my cough, not making noise when
roommates are sleeping, etc. If I choose to do the opposite, it would make no difference to me, but it would put other people's rights at stake. Third,
others have no saying in my decisions. I expect people to respect my rights and not to control or disturb me. Just as the way I respect them, they should
respect me.
III.Defining Moment
My moral compass gives me guidance on many decision making situations. However, chances are high that interests of different groups cannot always
be saved at the same time. Under these circumstances, no matter which one I choose, there would always be someone whose rights would be violated.
This is my defining moment.
There is no such thing as "absolute good" but "good for". Whenever I meet my defining moment, I think about the question, "Whose good should I be
serving?" I am not saying to evaluate whose interests are more valuable, but to evaluate whose interests are more important TO ME. There are three
principles for me to evaluate different interests. The first is the interest's indirect impact on the third party. For example, the police are investigating a
theft and I know who the thief is. I must

Moral Definition Essay
Because every situation is different, what I would view as being moral varies as the black and white lines blur to gray, but the common threads in
my moral framework that encompass all but the outlier circumstances are respect, treating others as they deserve, and causing no unnecessary pain.
Respect is completely drilled into the adolescent mind from the first day of elementary, so the fact it is one of my go to's in determining the right
thing to do in a situation is unsurprising. Along with respect is treating others as they deserve. In no way is short changing a person treating them in
the way they deserve The last category is to cause no unnecessary harm, which is more than just the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say
it at all" that every young child is told, as sometimes the truth can be beneficial. As a general rule, if what you are going to say has more potential for

America, their site posted a tweet on the subject. "God. Will. Not. Have. Fag. Marriage. Next Destruction. Praise God for leading this rebellious land

the court decision was it posted, making it disrespectful to anyone with a differing opinion for being accused of "...leading this rebellious land to
doom!" (@WBCsaysrepent) making this an example of immorality by my

Reflection Paper On Moral Values
Reflective Essay (Morals) Morals and virtues have been a part of society and are pivotal to surviving in any culture. All over the world, people are
raised differently and have different beliefs that ground them to their culture. Personally, growing up in a religious household I can see how that has
affected me and the foundation that my morals are based on. I think that there are different cultures that have different morals and as difficult as it is to
understand sometimes it is very important to respect their beliefs. That being said, it is important to strive to live under a moral code that I think is
best. The vast variety of ethics and different moral beliefs can definitely cause awkwardness or make some situations uncomfortable depending on
the clashing cultures. Although discussing morals can lead to awkward and uncomfortable situations, it is important to stick to your moral
foundations and respect other cultures as best you can. Growing up in a moderately wealthy religious family in the United States, I had the ability
to pick and choose which set of morals I followed. Although my family did play a huge rule in creating the foundation I live my life with, I was
very free to decide which path I chose. As I grew up, the influence of my parents slowly began to lessen and the virtues I had learned from them
began to mold me into the person I am today. I was also raised in a highly religious household. Even though I am slowly moving away from the
church going Christian I once was, the morals they engrained into me are things I will hopefully never forget. The last and possibly most
important ground was where I was raised. The suburb outside of Cleveland Ohio where I grew up wasn't the worst place to be raised, but it has
definitely changed my morals from the ones set by my parents and the church. Often times in school, I would have inner conflicts with the virtues set
by my church, and the nefarious activities my friends and I would want to do. I think this is a part of growing up. This struggle has rounded my
morals out leading me to be a good mix of both uptight and relaxed depending on the situation. Regardless of the journey to moral satisfaction, the goal
of perfection should never leave your

Morality, Moral, And Moral Decisions Essay
If there is one characteristic that distinguishes human civilization from any other organized species, then morality is definitely a favored candidate. In
English the words "beastly" or "brutal" are used to describe the cruelest form of moral perversity; in Chinese the phrase "birds and beast" refers to
people who committed appalling atrocities. Our propensity to view morality as the discriminating trait of human being overrides cultural and
geographical barriers. For some people, this phenomenon serves as the evidence for the idea that morality arises out of, and should be explained by
our ability for rational reasoning–a uniquely human faculty.
Different schools of philosophy identify different elements behind the reasoning process that governs moral decisions–for utilitarianism those are net
gain or loss of human welfare, and for Kantianism the only governing principle should be pure reason. However they all seem to harbor the same
imperfection: seldom any metaphysical explanations for morality accurately capture our typical mental process behind a moral decision. While
quotidian life is rife with moral decisions, neither careful evaluations of gain or loss in human welfare nor deliberate consideration of logical
consistency came up to one's mind on a daily basis. Moral psychologist took a different path: instead of constructing a logically coherent theory of ethics
and reaching moral guidelines through deduction, they acknowledge the existence of certain basic moral

situation I am and try to set up some prevention measurements to set myself from falling into a bad situation. Also, I will try to grow myself to be
more intelligent and stronger. And the most important thing is, I will never try to do harms to people because I can simultaneously be more

Ethics and Morality: Right and Wrong Essay
I strongly believe that some acts are morally right and others morally wrong. Though in society today I find many different people with many
different opinions on this some issues. The way someone was raised or the experiences they have faced could be what has molded these beliefs. The
differences between right and wrong are not always the same in each person's head and this is where we face controversy. Morals differ from person to
person resulting in confrontations dealing with morality issues. Such as euthanasia, human beings should not have to suffer, just as we do not allow
animals to suffer. I believe Pro–Choice is morally right. Woman should be given the choice of whether or not she can terminate her pregnancy. On

Woman should be given the choice to do what they wish with their body. Whether it be abortion or having their child. First of all it is not always
by the woman choice that they become pregnant. Many times women are raped and unfortunately become pregnant, and in this situation, I do not
understand how anyone could say that it is morally wrong for her to terminate the pregnancy. No child wants to be the outcome of a rape victim.
Pregnancy could change a person's life drastically and not always in a positive way. For example, college bound woman sometimes will never
make it to college because they have to work full time to take care of their child or they drop out of high school. I believe it is morally wrong for
woman to use abortion as a form of birth control, though accidents happen and woman should be given the opportunity to fix things and learn from
their mistakes. I feel cheating is morally wrong in all aspects. Whether it is cheating on a test, cheating on a loved one or cheating just to get ahead
of the guy in front of you. Everyone should be given the same opportunities and cheating allows one to move ahead of others in an unfair manner.
People are generally trust worthy of others and when someone cheats that trust is gone. There are people who believe cheating is morally right and
feel if they can get away with it than why not do it. But I feel these types of people are just

Honesty and deceit. Compassion and Neglect. Benevolence and malevolence. All these represent the extremes in the spectrum of morality. From the
general societal viewpoint, the former represents the attitudes which should be admired, rewarded and emulated, while the latter represents the attitudes
which should be abhorred, punished and discouraged. Now philosophers, not being satisfied with leaving things well enough alone, endeavour to
discover why this is so. Why do we admire acts of kindness? Why do we loathe acts of malice? It is generally thought that the crux of this question of
morality has to do with the magnitude of selfishness accounted for in the acts and thoughts of individuals. If we can think of...show more content...

crushing bite to the windpipe ends the chase. What better illustration of life than this Discovery Channel scenario? Nietzsche would have loved
the Discovery Channel because it illustrates Nietzsche's definition of life as a 'will to power'. The will to power is any organism's natural
inclination to overpower, appropriate and exploit others in a way that best benefits the organism. The cheetah is exercising its will to power by
chasing, killing and devouring the gazelle. The gazelles will to power is to escape, robbing the cheetah of sustenance. No one would find fault with
the cheetah in injuring and killing the gazelle, just as no one would find fault with the gazelle if it happened to contribute to the death of the cheetah
by starvation. We ourselves are animals as well, therefore, how can we be blameworthy when we exploit, and overpower other organisms, Nietzsche
asks. We are just as entitled to life as any other organism, and being so, we have the natural right to exercise our will to power. Therefore, any notion
we have of 'treating others as we would want to be treated', is faulty and

This doesn't mean our values or ethics are wrong it just means we think differently than others. When surrounded by different groups, one uses
various types of ethics. For example when one is surrounded by friends and brothers or sisters one forgets what on was taught by our elders about
manners and about being courteous, but when dealing with elders or a superior, certain carefulness is necessary. One cannot just say anything that
pops out into one's head, because one can be judged accordingly and would be thought to be vulgar or disrespectful. We develop many values and
ethics through past experiences whether it is a positive or negative experience. These thoughts and beliefs are what guide us through our life.
Knowing between right and wrong is a good foundation to practicing good ethics and morals. In today's world, individuals can make a single
decision that can have an extreme positive or negative effect on their family, their employer, a nation, and even on the entire world. The life we
lead reflects the strength of our character. For example, if we choose to steal, instead of earning it that makes one of weak character or morals. Like
in The Pardoner's Tale from Chaucer, " greed is the root of all evil." Ethics are different for each person, but for the most part, people want to be
known as a good person. One wants to be known as someone who can be trusted, and one is concerned about his or her relationships

Morality is defined as a system or code that we humans use to differentiate between right and wrong. This system could be derived from a number of
factors: religion, culture, and upbringing. It is difficult enough to determine what an individual's morals are, but going further to determine how we
came to possess those morals is even more ambitious. Still, regardless of its difficulty, this subject consumes many philosophers and psychologists. One
such moral psychologists, Jonathan Haidt, is theorizing the possibility of evolution causing ones morality. Haidt is a moral psychologist at the

One is the ancient system, a system that developed before humans could speak. This system drives our emotions. It is with this system that humans
received their instinctual reactions to specific situations; it is these sorts of "gut reactions" that enabled human survival in ancient times. The other is a
modern system, a system that initiated when language was invented. This system, he explains, is more associated with our ability to reason and judge.
This system allows us to question our instinctual reactions and determine some explanation as to why we feel a particular way. However, he feels that
these two complex systems are subconsciously active within the individual; he does not believe that people are aware of these concepts affecting their
morality. These two systems are the key or answer to why moral dumbfounding occurs. It occurs when the two systems conflictВ—when reasoning
cannot explain your initial reaction. Furthermore, Haidt believes that emotions are linked more to one's subconscious, while reasoning is linked to
one's consciousness. He believes most philosophy focuses too much on the conscious while underestimating the power of the subconscious. In regards
to his experiment testing one's disgust for eating one's pet, he believes this disgust originated in ancient times when people first began to eat meat.
When beginning this tradition, people had to

Morality is an important component of a human being because it helps shape the ethical foundation that every human being has. Whether to be good,
evil, honest, or deceitful are just some of the traits morality helps us develop. Thus, it is evident that morality is a crucial component of a human being.
However, what ultimately drives moral action? This question is debated and investigated against many philosophers, a few of them being Thomas
Hobbes, Frans de Waal, and David Hume.
Hobbes believes that in the state of nature, humans have no laws, morals, police force, property, government, culture, knowledge, or durable
infrastructure. Within this state of nature, people have no morals and do as they please without any consequence. As...show more content...
Both are powerful forces that contribute to morality. However, Hume concludes that it is the sentiment, feeling, or pleasure that human beings feel that
ultimately shape their morality.
Both Hume and Hobbes have opposing views regarding whether or not humans are naturally moral. Hume believes that humans are naturally moral.
According to Hume, humans derive their morality through sentiments or feelings that help shape behavior and action. Hobbes, however, believes that
humans are selfish individuals and in turn do not have moral values. This is described as the state of nature. He further believes that humans do not
have a unified moral code or system and must thus find a higher power that would help shape their behavior. Such a power, Hobbes argues, should be
the government as it develops laws that all humans must abide by. Hobbes describes this as common wealth.
Frans de Waal begins his argument by first stating the question as to whether or not a human's moral actions originated from the psychological and
behavioral nature of our evolutionary ancestors. He concludes this thought by saying that our moral actions do, in fact, originate from the
psychological and behavioral nature of our evolutionary ancestors. De Waal further argues that the foundations of human morals are found in the
primates of today. They are composed of actions and emotions whose evolutionary role assists us in our social organization and unity. In the beginning

Morals Vs. Ethics : Morals And Ethics Essay
Morals vs. Ethics
Morals and ethics are often thought of as interchangeable terms, and both can be applied in various situations. Morals are ultimately the "groundwork"
for ethics. However, the two nouns have a distinct meaning.
Morals are internal principles that a person focuses upon when deciding between right or wrong conduct. A person's true character can be revealed by
understanding that said person's morals. Ethics are a set of rules or rules of conduct that a person follows due to social or company standards. For
example, stealing money from your workplace would be considered unethical, and disrespecting your coworkers would be immoral. In addition, both
morals and ethics could be applied in both situations.
Another way to explain the difference between the two nouns is to discuss the alleged origins of both morals and ethics. Morality first came about in
the Latin language. It is derived from the word "mos", meaning custom. On the other hand, ethics is derived from the Greek word "ethos", meaning
character. As I said before, both morals and ethics have similar terminology, but each have a separate description.

Morality As Good Or Bad? Essay
MORALITY
(MORALITY)
"He makes the point that we judge particular acts as good or bad and that we say things like, "He ought to have done this or he ought to have done
that." How can these be unless there was a supreme morality that we could compare our actions and thoughts against?"
– C.W. Lewis, Author of "Mere Christianity"–
The definition of morality is, best described as, "beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior. The degree to which something is
right and good. The moral goodness or badness of something", according to Merriam–Webster Dictionary. An article from, Pursing the Truth Ministries,
(http://www.pursuingthetruth.org/sermons/files/conscienceAndMorality.htm), it says,
"Morality can be broken down into three different areas, Individual morality, Systems of principles and judgments (moral values) shared within a
cultural, religious, secular, humanist or philosophical community and Codes of behavior or conduct derived from the moral code."
Our moral values are derive by the culture that we live in. For example, our surrounding environment that we choose to surround ourselves with like our
religion, our peers, and our towns we live in. We achieve our moral values through our personal experiences, which can be seen through peer pressure,
conscience, our beliefs and by the law that we set for ourselves.
The Bible talks about morality and as Christians how we are to live by the principles set forth. In (Mark 7:20–23) NIV, "What comes out

What is Morality? Essay
What is Morality?
Philosophers around the world have debated the meaning of morality for centuries. However, it is a word too subjective to be either denoted or
defined. Aristotle, often referred to as the father of philosophy, advised that one could determine what is moral by examining the mean between two
"less desirable" extremes. For example, courage is a mean between fear and thoughtless rashness; generosity, between extravagance and parsimony.
Plato argued that "to know the good is to do the good." In other words, those who behave immorally due so out of mere ignorance, not defiance.
Furthermore, Plato believed that a moral person is a truly happy person; and because people always desire their own happiness, they always...show more

This reward system trains us to believe that what is legal is moral. Although a person may be a law–abiding citizen, he or she may not necessarily be
moral.
The morality of an individual is also based on his or her childhood. Parents have an immense effect on their children's values. For instance, if parents
teach their child at early ages to be a hard–worker, to be honest and true, and to have integrity, then it is likely that the child will grow up with these
morals instilled within them. However, some children grow to be the antithesis of their parents. They see that their parents are immoral and so they
intentionally grow to think and behave differently. If so, is the child immoral for defying his or her parents, or is the child moral for defying his or her
immoral parents?
Another factor in determining one's morals is one's religiosity. For instance, some religions, such as Hinduism, believe in animal sacrifices as a way of
worshiping; however, other religions, such as Catholicism, do not. Thus, to a Catholic, the sacrifice of innocent animals may seem immoral whereas
followers of the Hindu religion view the practice as sacred. Therefore, one cannot conclude that simply because a person is religious, he or she is also
moral. There are thousands of religions throughout the world; who has the authority to determine whose

Everyday we are tested as individuals to make the right choice. How we view ourselves as individuals and how others view us are directly correlated to

So how do we define morals? Do we follow Gods' moral rules because to do so would increase out likelihood of obtaining salvation in the afterlife? Or
is it simpler than that. Is God going to deny our entrance into heaven because we have run a stop sign here and there? No. I believe our moral values are

As the morning wore on I began to get anxious and fidgety feeling that no deer were going to come. As I was contemplating whether to leave my
stand in the field, I recognized two deer grazing peacefully in the middle of the field. I quickly pulled up and looked through my scope and saw
nothing but green fuzz. I was so nervous that I had forgotten to readjust the focus on my scope. As I did, the deer saw me move and began to trot
away from me and into the protection of the forest. I managed to get my scope in focus in time to see that there was a buck and a doe. My chance
had finally come. I was going to get my first Vermont buck. I immediately stood up from my stand and jogged over to where they had entered the
woods. Once in the woods, I evaluated the surroundings and had a good

The Moral Framework I Disagree: How Utilitarianism Shapes Decision-Making

  • 1. The Moral Framework I Disagree The moral framework I tend to personally abide by is act utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is the ethical concept that the actions that lead to the most pleasure are moral and good, whereas those that lead to pain are an immoral evil (Boss 23). When making decisions, I contemplate the advantages and disadvantages of each option presented before acting upon it. In addition, I consider those who would possibly be affected by my decision both positively and negatively. Like utilitarianism, I choose the option with the least amount of negative consequences. I am typically inclined to follow a selfless framework, however, occasionally I must put myself before others depending on the situation. For example, school is always top priority over my social life. When I choose my social life over school the consequences are profound. Usually this increases my work load and then leads to painful amounts of stress. Capital punishment is an important social justice issue because the United States is the only remaining Western democracy that actively uses it as a punishment method, and two–thirds of the countries have realized it is immoral (Boss 223). The constitutionality of this issue was questioned in the Furman v. Georgia Supreme Court case in 1972. The case determined that it was indeed unconstitutional because it contradicts the United States' values declared in the Constitution by denying civil liberties that are stated in the Eighth and the Fourteenth amendments (ACLU). The Eighth Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Importance of Moral Philosophy A Moral Essay As a human being and as a leader, moral philosophy is very important (Fagothey, 2000; Pojman, 2012). What a leader believes from a moral and ethical standpoint is often shaped by what that leader was taught growing up. Each person has a set of morals that they learned at some point in their life. These morals were observed from and taught by parents and other family members, as well as friends, neighbors, teachers, and others in the community. The goal becomes the reaching of Eudaimonia, or "flourishing." As a person develops through childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, that person's moral compass is developed through experiences with virtue ethics, which shape that person's ethical beliefs into what they equate to in adult life. There have been many experiences that have shaped and developed my moral compass and began my walk down the path to flourishing. Religious faith has always been the foundation to support my moral beliefs, and it helps me to focus on doing what is right. It does not mean I am a perfect human being, as I know I have many faults. My simple life has imperfections all throughout it. Any person who is looking for a virtuous life from an ethical standpoint may struggle with religious questions, but those who are dedicated to a life well–lived will focus on what they are offering to others as opposed to what others are providing to them (Pojman, 2012). I believe that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. However, I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development Essay Kohlberg's theory of moral development consists of six stages within three levels known as preconventional Morality, conventional Morality and postconventional Morality. Kohlberg calls stage one thinking "preconventional" because children are unable to speak as members of society at this point. Instead, they see morality as what the adults say they must do. Kohlberg believes that moral development is a process which occurs throughout the lifespan and does not end at any given time. He is not so much focused on the right or wrong answer but in the reasoning behind the decision making. Stage one of preconventional morality focuses on obedience and punishment. This stage is most commonly seen in younger children. This is because children...show more content... At stage 2, in contrast, punishment is simply a risk that one naturally wants to avoid(Crain). The difference between the two can go unnoticed in a child. Decisions made by a child around the age of ten can be influenced based upon both stages. It is for this reason that these stages are in the same level, children in either of these stages speak and make decisions as individuals rather than as members of society. Conventional morality is level 2 of Kohlberg's theory. Interpersonal relationships is stage 3 and mainly focuses on living up to social expectations. Children and adults in this stage consider how choices influence relationships. An individual will act to gain approval of others. Peer pressure plays a major role during this stage. People will do most things to remain loyal to a popular look, lifestyle or group of people in which they need to gain or maintain approval of. School students are typically influenced by others very often and are surrounded by persuasion which is why it is more likely for teens to fall under this category. The child/individual becomes aware of the wider rules of society so judgments concern obeying rules in order to uphold the law and to avoid guilt(McLeod). Stage four in conventional morality revolves around maintaining social order. This is the highest stage most adults will attain. At this stage people consider society when making judgments and decisions. Typically a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Morality And The Origins Of Morality Most of the times Nietzsche understands "morality" as the set of values typical of the European society of his days. In this sense, it is safe to say that Nietzsche opposes morality and that genealogy serves the ultimate goal of undermining it. However, it is legitimate to envision for genealogy a scope for application which goes beyond the particular morality of 19th century Germans. Accordingly, my claim is that in Nietzsche European morality represents just one possible form of morality. Nietzsche himself seems to claim that he is focusing his attacks only on a specific instance of morality – one among possible others. So for example, in the preface to On the Genealogy of Morals he claims that the object of the book is the value of...show more content... '2 Morals are therefore normative codes according to which we orientate ourselves in the context of different spheres of life. Assuming that Schacht 's interpretation is correct, I believe that his analysis bear strong similarities with the view of morality I adopted in the first chapter. On one hand, Schacht's talk of "spheres of life" leads to transcend our often restricted understanding of morality as including simply the realm of ethical rights and duties, or as being focused on explaining why and how we should act in order to live morally. In Schacht's sense, morality rather seems to include the mores of the Latin or the ethoi of the Greek. In other words, our family of norms is the set of values we live by in all the different situations we come across in our existence, including many areas of life that the restricted understanding of morality would not consider as relevant. Furthermore, to understand these mores/ethoi as moral standards or imperatives to which we have to conform is to understand only a side aspect of them. In fact, more than simply being moral rules directing our behaviour, these customs constitute our un–reflected habits – that is, the way in which we automatically express ourselves in a particular context – , often being normative on a very unconscious level. • 5. Moral Development Essay The moral development of a person's character will have a major impact on society as a whole. If we fail to show children moral responsibility they in turn will lack the moral and ethical sense of values. The critical importance of the early years remains crucial to all later development. With all the violence and unsuitable language in film, television, and music today's society poses an even larger threat on children. Moral functioning involves self–esteem, self–control, and altruistic behavior. It seems as if children are developing at a faster rate than previous generations. If we fail to instill morals than we may fail to produce children that have the conscience to decide what is right from what is wrong. If children grow up lacking...show more content... I have designed an experiment that will help determine if girls are more moral than boys. Through the local elementary and junior high schools in Los Angeles, California I have found 25 girls and 25 boys that range from five to twelve years of age. All the students come from affluent neighborhoods and are from households that have married parents and they are all Caucasians. During this experiment the first thing that will be done is to divide the children up according to age and sex. The children will then view videotapes, which are the independent variable, of set–up moral scenarios and write down what they would do in that particular situation that they had viewed. The dependent variable of this experiment is the moral outcome. All the participants in this experiment are in a controlled environment. A few of the problems with this experiment are that the group of students comes from the same background, same area, and all from married parents. There is no diversity in ethnicity or culture. This experiment may not prove my hypothesis to be correct but it may help to validate whether or not this topic is promising enough to continue on with the research. If the findings are true and girls are more moral than boys we need to find out why that is. What we can do to change it. What is it that is making girls more moral? Is it society or the way that the child is raised? Many important questions will arise from this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Moral Compass Essay Moral Compass Essay Yuebo (Grace) Zhu I.Introduction A moral compass is the moral guide on which a person bases his/her decisions and distinguishes what is right from what is wrong. With our moral compass, we know what rules we should play by. When I was a child, I learnt Chinese traditional wisdom, Confucianism, from my parents and elementary school. The core of Confucianism is humanity, to be altruistic, upright and courteous within the society, from which I got to know the rules I should honor. I shouldn't judge others' choices because they have their own rights to choose freely. Second, don't do anything that will violate others' basic rights. Examples are as covering my cough, not making noise when roommates are sleeping, etc. If I choose to do the opposite, it would make no difference to me, but it would put other people's rights at stake. Third, others have no saying in my decisions. I expect people to respect my rights and not to control or disturb me. Just as the way I respect them, they should respect me. III.Defining Moment My moral compass gives me guidance on many decision making situations. However, chances are high that interests of different groups cannot always be saved at the same time. Under these circumstances, no matter which one I choose, there would always be someone whose rights would be violated. This is my defining moment. There is no such thing as "absolute good" but "good for". Whenever I meet my defining moment, I think about the question, "Whose good should I be serving?" I am not saying to evaluate whose interests are more valuable, but to evaluate whose interests are more important TO ME. There are three principles for me to evaluate different interests. The first is the interest's indirect impact on the third party. For example, the police are investigating a theft and I know who the thief is. I must

  • 8. Moral Definition Essay Because every situation is different, what I would view as being moral varies as the black and white lines blur to gray, but the common threads in my moral framework that encompass all but the outlier circumstances are respect, treating others as they deserve, and causing no unnecessary pain. Respect is completely drilled into the adolescent mind from the first day of elementary, so the fact it is one of my go to's in determining the right thing to do in a situation is unsurprising. Along with respect is treating others as they deserve. In no way is short changing a person treating them in the way they deserve The last category is to cause no unnecessary harm, which is more than just the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all" that every young child is told, as sometimes the truth can be beneficial. As a general rule, if what you are going to say has more potential for harm than good, then I personally believe it would be immoral to say it....show more content... While commonly used as treating someone as an authority, I use it in the sense of treating someone like a person. Let's take, for example, the Westboro Baptist Church. Because of their religion, they believe that homosexuality is a sin. Recently, after the legalization of homosexual marriage in America, their site posted a tweet on the subject. "God. Will. Not. Have. Fag. Marriage. Next Destruction. Praise God for leading this rebellious land to its doom!" (@WBCsaysrepent). What I believe is immoral in this example, is not the belief itself, but the intent. For no other reason than in spite of the court decision was it posted, making it disrespectful to anyone with a differing opinion for being accused of "...leading this rebellious land to doom!" (@WBCsaysrepent) making this an example of immorality by my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Reflection Paper On Moral Values Reflective Essay (Morals) Morals and virtues have been a part of society and are pivotal to surviving in any culture. All over the world, people are raised differently and have different beliefs that ground them to their culture. Personally, growing up in a religious household I can see how that has affected me and the foundation that my morals are based on. I think that there are different cultures that have different morals and as difficult as it is to understand sometimes it is very important to respect their beliefs. That being said, it is important to strive to live under a moral code that I think is best. The vast variety of ethics and different moral beliefs can definitely cause awkwardness or make some situations uncomfortable depending on the clashing cultures. Although discussing morals can lead to awkward and uncomfortable situations, it is important to stick to your moral foundations and respect other cultures as best you can. Growing up in a moderately wealthy religious family in the United States, I had the ability to pick and choose which set of morals I followed. Although my family did play a huge rule in creating the foundation I live my life with, I was very free to decide which path I chose. As I grew up, the influence of my parents slowly began to lessen and the virtues I had learned from them began to mold me into the person I am today. I was also raised in a highly religious household. Even though I am slowly moving away from the church going Christian I once was, the morals they engrained into me are things I will hopefully never forget. The last and possibly most important ground was where I was raised. The suburb outside of Cleveland Ohio where I grew up wasn't the worst place to be raised, but it has definitely changed my morals from the ones set by my parents and the church. Often times in school, I would have inner conflicts with the virtues set by my church, and the nefarious activities my friends and I would want to do. I think this is a part of growing up. This struggle has rounded my morals out leading me to be a good mix of both uptight and relaxed depending on the situation. Morality, Moral, And Moral Decisions Essay If there is one characteristic that distinguishes human civilization from any other organized species, then morality is definitely a favored candidate. In English the words "beastly" or "brutal" are used to describe the cruelest form of moral perversity; in Chinese the phrase "birds and beast" refers to people who committed appalling atrocities. Our propensity to view morality as the discriminating trait of human being overrides cultural and geographical barriers. For some people, this phenomenon serves as the evidence for the idea that morality arises out of, and should be explained by our ability for rational reasoning–a uniquely human faculty. Different schools of philosophy identify different elements behind the reasoning process that governs moral decisions–for utilitarianism those are net gain or loss of human welfare, and for Kantianism the only governing principle should be pure reason. However they all seem to harbor the same imperfection: seldom any metaphysical explanations for morality accurately capture our typical mental process behind a moral decision. While quotidian life is rife with moral decisions, neither careful evaluations of gain or loss in human welfare nor deliberate consideration of logical consistency came up to one's mind on a daily basis. Moral psychologist took a different path: instead of constructing a logically coherent theory of ethics and reaching moral guidelines through deduction, they acknowledge the existence of certain basic moral Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Moral Compass Essay The moral compass Essay Introduction According to the definition of the Moral Compass text, moral compass is the reflective, international adoption of values and behaviors as a framework for realizing the good in oneself, in others, and in the social and material environment. My own moral compass is constructed mainly by my parents and the eastern social values and principles of relationships, which are largely influenced by the thoughts and ideas of Buddhism, Taoism and the Confucianism. Among them, Confucianism affects my country's social values and furthermore my parents and my moral compass the most. Therefore, I will make observations of people and the environments, to always best understand what situation I am and try to set up some prevention measurements to set myself from falling into a bad situation. Also, I will try to grow myself to be more intelligent and stronger. And the most important thing is, I will never try to do harms to people because I can simultaneously be more sensitive to know whether if there is any harm to others by the measurements I am about to take. Defining the Moment Talking about the defining moment of personal moral challenge, I had one experience facing challenge related to my moral code before. While I was at my elementary school, I was kind of person that trusted everyone without any other thoughts. I just simply believed what other said to me, and was not dare or dislike to reject other's request. Once there was a classmate and also friend of mine tried to borrow some money from me. • 12. Ethics and Morality: Right and Wrong Essay I strongly believe that some acts are morally right and others morally wrong. Though in society today I find many different people with many different opinions on this some issues. The way someone was raised or the experiences they have faced could be what has molded these beliefs. The differences between right and wrong are not always the same in each person's head and this is where we face controversy. Morals differ from person to person resulting in confrontations dealing with morality issues. Such as euthanasia, human beings should not have to suffer, just as we do not allow animals to suffer. Woman should be given the choice to do what they wish with their body. Whether it be abortion or having their child. First of all it is not always by the woman choice that they become pregnant. Many times women are raped and unfortunately become pregnant, and in this situation, I do not understand how anyone could say that it is morally wrong for her to terminate the pregnancy. No child wants to be the outcome of a rape victim. Pregnancy could change a person's life drastically and not always in a positive way. For example, college bound woman sometimes will never make it to college because they have to work full time to take care of their child or they drop out of high school. I believe it is morally wrong for woman to use abortion as a form of birth control, though accidents happen and woman should be given the opportunity to fix things and learn from their mistakes. I feel cheating is morally wrong in all aspects. Whether it is cheating on a test, cheating on a loved one or cheating just to get ahead of the guy in front of you. Everyone should be given the same opportunities and cheating allows one to move ahead of others in an unfair manner. People are generally trust worthy of others and when someone cheats that trust is gone. There are people who believe cheating is morally right and feel if they can get away with it than why not do it. But I feel these types of people are just Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Moral Actions Essay Moral Actions Honesty and deceit. Compassion and Neglect. Benevolence and malevolence. All these represent the extremes in the spectrum of morality. From the general societal viewpoint, the former represents the attitudes which should be admired, rewarded and emulated, while the latter represents the attitudes which should be abhorred, punished and discouraged. Now philosophers, not being satisfied with leaving things well enough alone, endeavour to discover why this is so. Why do we admire acts of kindness? Why do we loathe acts of malice? It is generally thought that the crux of this question of morality has to do with the magnitude of selfishness accounted for in the acts and thoughts of individuals. What better illustration of life than this Discovery Channel scenario? Nietzsche would have loved the Discovery Channel because it illustrates Nietzsche's definition of life as a 'will to power'. The will to power is any organism's natural inclination to overpower, appropriate and exploit others in a way that best benefits the organism. The cheetah is exercising its will to power by chasing, killing and devouring the gazelle. The gazelles will to power is to escape, robbing the cheetah of sustenance. No one would find fault with the cheetah in injuring and killing the gazelle, just as no one would find fault with the gazelle if it happened to contribute to the death of the cheetah by starvation. We ourselves are animals as well, therefore, how can we be blameworthy when we exploit, and overpower other organisms, Nietzsche asks. We are just as entitled to life as any other organism, and being so, we have the natural right to exercise our will to power. Therefore, any notion we have of 'treating others as we would want to be treated', is faulty and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

One cannot just say anything that pops out into one's head, because one can be judged accordingly and would be thought to be vulgar or disrespectful. We develop many values and ethics through past experiences whether it is a positive or negative experience. These thoughts and beliefs are what guide us through our life. Knowing between right and wrong is a good foundation to practicing good ethics and morals. In today's world, individuals can make a single decision that can have an extreme positive or negative effect on their family, their employer, a nation, and even on the entire world. The life we lead reflects the strength of our character. For example, if we choose to steal, instead of earning it that makes one of weak character or morals. Like in The Pardoner's Tale from Chaucer, " greed is the root of all evil." Ethics are different for each person, but for the most part, people want to be known as a good person. • 15. Morality Essay examples Morality is defined as a system or code that we humans use to differentiate between right and wrong. This system could be derived from a number of factors: religion, culture, and upbringing. It is difficult enough to determine what an individual's morals are, but going further to determine how we came to possess those morals is even more ambitious. Still, regardless of its difficulty, this subject consumes many philosophers and psychologists. One such moral psychologists, Jonathan Haidt, is theorizing the possibility of evolution causing ones morality. One is the ancient system, a system that developed before humans could speak. This system drives our emotions. It is with this system that humans received their instinctual reactions to specific situations; it is these sorts of "gut reactions" that enabled human survival in ancient times. The other is a modern system, a system that initiated when language was invented. This system, he explains, is more associated with our ability to reason and judge. This system allows us to question our instinctual reactions and determine some explanation as to why we feel a particular way. However, he feels that these two complex systems are subconsciously active within the individual; he does not believe that people are aware of these concepts affecting their morality. These two systems are the key or answer to why moral dumbfounding occurs. It occurs when the two systems conflictВ—when reasoning cannot explain your initial reaction. Furthermore, Haidt believes that emotions are linked more to one's subconscious, while reasoning is linked to one's consciousness. He believes most philosophy focuses too much on the conscious while underestimating the power of the subconscious. In regards to his experiment testing one's disgust for eating one's pet, he believes this disgust originated in ancient times when people first began to eat meat. • 16. Morality is an important component of a human being because it helps shape the ethical foundation that every human being has. Whether to be good, evil, honest, or deceitful are just some of the traits morality helps us develop. Thus, it is evident that morality is a crucial component of a human being. However, what ultimately drives moral action? This question is debated and investigated against many philosophers, a few of them being Thomas Hobbes, Frans de Waal, and David Hume. Hobbes believes that in the state of nature, humans have no laws, morals, police force, property, government, culture, knowledge, or durable infrastructure. Within this state of nature, people have no morals and do as they please without any consequence. As...show more content... Both are powerful forces that contribute to morality. However, Hume concludes that it is the sentiment, feeling, or pleasure that human beings feel that ultimately shape their morality. Both Hume and Hobbes have opposing views regarding whether or not humans are naturally moral. Hume believes that humans are naturally moral. According to Hume, humans derive their morality through sentiments or feelings that help shape behavior and action. Hobbes, however, believes that humans are selfish individuals and in turn do not have moral values. This is described as the state of nature. He further believes that humans do not have a unified moral code or system and must thus find a higher power that would help shape their behavior. Such a power, Hobbes argues, should be the government as it develops laws that all humans must abide by. Hobbes describes this as common wealth. Frans de Waal begins his argument by first stating the question as to whether or not a human's moral actions originated from the psychological and behavioral nature of our evolutionary ancestors. He concludes this thought by saying that our moral actions do, in fact, originate from the psychological and behavioral nature of our evolutionary ancestors. De Waal further argues that the foundations of human morals are found in the primates of today. They are composed of actions and emotions whose evolutionary role assists us in our social organization and unity. In the beginning pages of his book, De Waal Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Morals Vs. Ethics : Morals And Ethics Essay Morals vs. Ethics Morals and ethics are often thought of as interchangeable terms, and both can be applied in various situations. Morals are ultimately the "groundwork" for ethics. However, the two nouns have a distinct meaning. Morals are internal principles that a person focuses upon when deciding between right or wrong conduct. A person's true character can be revealed by understanding that said person's morals. Ethics are a set of rules or rules of conduct that a person follows due to social or company standards. For example, stealing money from your workplace would be considered unethical, and disrespecting your coworkers would be immoral. In addition, both morals and ethics could be applied in both situations. Another way to explain the difference between the two nouns is to discuss the alleged origins of both morals and ethics. Morality first came about in the Latin language. It is derived from the word "mos", meaning custom. On the other hand, ethics is derived from the Greek word "ethos", meaning character. As I said before, both morals and ethics have similar terminology, but each have a separate description. Morals and Ethics in Business When dealing with contracts, each party has a duty to fulfill one's contractual obligations effectively and on time. • 18. Morality As Good Or Bad? Essay MORALITY (MORALITY) "He makes the point that we judge particular acts as good or bad and that we say things like, "He ought to have done this or he ought to have done that." How can these be unless there was a supreme morality that we could compare our actions and thoughts against?" – C.W. Lewis, Author of "Mere Christianity"– The definition of morality is, best described as, "beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior. The degree to which something is right and good. The moral goodness or badness of something", according to Merriam–Webster Dictionary. An article from, Pursing the Truth Ministries, (http://www.pursuingthetruth.org/sermons/files/conscienceAndMorality.htm), it says, "Morality can be broken down into three different areas, Individual morality, Systems of principles and judgments (moral values) shared within a cultural, religious, secular, humanist or philosophical community and Codes of behavior or conduct derived from the moral code." Our moral values are derive by the culture that we live in. For example, our surrounding environment that we choose to surround ourselves with like our religion, our peers, and our towns we live in. We achieve our moral values through our personal experiences, which can be seen through peer pressure, conscience, our beliefs and by the law that we set for ourselves. The Bible talks about morality and as Christians how we are to live by the principles set forth. In (Mark 7:20–23) NIV, "What comes out Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. What is Morality? Essay What is Morality? Philosophers around the world have debated the meaning of morality for centuries. However, it is a word too subjective to be either denoted or defined. Aristotle, often referred to as the father of philosophy, advised that one could determine what is moral by examining the mean between two "less desirable" extremes. For example, courage is a mean between fear and thoughtless rashness; generosity, between extravagance and parsimony. Plato argued that "to know the good is to do the good." In other words, those who behave immorally due so out of mere ignorance, not defiance. Furthermore, Plato believed that a moral person is a truly happy person; and because people always desire their own happiness, they always...show more content... This reward system trains us to believe that what is legal is moral. Although a person may be a law–abiding citizen, he or she may not necessarily be moral. The morality of an individual is also based on his or her childhood. Parents have an immense effect on their children's values. For instance, if parents teach their child at early ages to be a hard–worker, to be honest and true, and to have integrity, then it is likely that the child will grow up with these morals instilled within them. However, some children grow to be the antithesis of their parents. They see that their parents are immoral and so they intentionally grow to think and behave differently. If so, is the child immoral for defying his or her parents, or is the child moral for defying his or her immoral parents? Another factor in determining one's morals is one's religiosity. For instance, some religions, such as Hinduism, believe in animal sacrifices as a way of worshiping; however, other religions, such as Catholicism, do not. Thus, to a Catholic, the sacrifice of innocent animals may seem immoral whereas followers of the Hindu religion view the practice as sacred. Therefore, one cannot conclude that simply because a person is religious, he or she is also moral. There are thousands of religions throughout the world; who has the authority to determine whose Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Essay on Moral Dilemma Moral Dilemma Everyday we are tested as individuals to make the right choice. How we view ourselves as individuals and how others view us are directly correlated to our moral decision–making. But morals are somewhat misleading. What might be a wrong decision for one person might be a solution to another. So how do we define morals? Do we follow Gods' moral rules because to do so would increase out likelihood of obtaining salvation in the afterlife? Or is it simpler than that. Is God going to deny our entrance into heaven because we have run a stop sign here and there? No. I believe our moral values are much simpler than that. I kept walking for about a quarter mile until I came upon a field that was always a hot spot for deer in the morning. It was an exciting feeling to be out in the woods with the deer, yet at the same time, a terrifying feeling. Was I going to fail yet another year of not bagging my buck? I was anxious as to what my family and friends would think of me. I needed to get a deer in the worst way. As the morning wore on I began to get anxious and fidgety feeling that no deer were going to come. As I was contemplating whether to leave my stand in the field, I recognized two deer grazing peacefully in the middle of the field. I quickly pulled up and looked through my scope and saw nothing but green fuzz. I was so nervous that I had forgotten to readjust the focus on my scope. As I did, the deer saw me move and began to trot away from me and into the protection of the forest. I managed to get my scope in focus in time to see that there was a buck and a doe.
