Canada's population grew from 30.1 million in 2001 to 31.6 million in 2006, an increase of 1.5 million people or 5.4%. This growth was driven by immigration as immigrants accounted for two-thirds of Canada's population increase. Between 2001 and 2006, about 1 million people immigrated to Canada, more than in any other previous five-year period.
