Havis began in 2011 with a mission to conduct research and design projects that improve social welfare. Over the past 6 years, 48% of their projects and 87% of revenue came from this "social good" work in 9 African countries. Going forward, Havis will focus on 4 strategic themes: agriculture value chains, inclusion, mobile money, and semiotics in communication design. Their work in these areas aims to better understand needs and modify behaviors to benefit consumers and the environment. Clients value Havis' expertise and regional insights across Africa.

SOCIAL GOOD REPORT 2011-2016 HAVIS began trading in 2011 and set out to work on projects which had the potenIal to “make the world a beMer place.” This definiIon meant that we would be parIal towards research and design jobs whose implementaIon would go towards reducing inequality and vulnerability, boosIng social and economic inclusion, curbing health-risk and gender-biased behaviour, understanding beMer the needs of boMom-of-the-pyramid consumers or similar goals. Thanks to our clients, we are doing our bit as the three charts illustrate: 48% of the research and design projects we have accepted over the last 6 years fall in this category of work; more significant, 87% of our gross billings were derived from such work; these projects were carried out in 9 Sub-Saharan Africa countries – Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. - 6. THE WORK we have undertaken over the last 6 years can be clustered into four areas. These themes (also our fields of interest) guide the choice of clients we target and briefs we respond to. We assess whether prospecIve work, if and when done, will contribute to answering the respecIve themaIc quesIon. This helps us maintain our strategic focus, build domain knowledge, develop technical skills and foster our professional acquaintance with these areas and, as a result, serve our clients more effecIvely. 1. Mobile money How can we be*er understand agriculture value chains in order to circumvent none value-adding and wasteful stages and processes to improve incomes and farming outcomes? How can we embed mobile money in more transac;on types in order to broaden the benefits (speed, security, reach, affordability, transparency, etc.) of the ecosystems? 2. Inclusion 4. SemioFcs in packaging and communicaFon design How can we create more inclusive environments (physical, social, poli;cal, economic, etc.) to accommodate marginalised / excluded segments of the popula;on? How can we be*er signal, through design, produc;on and consump;on habits which are neutral / beneficial / harmful to both the consumer and the environment and modify behaviour accordingly?
