Pastor Francois van Niekerk discusses the concept of "possessing prayer" which involves listening with an open heart to understand God's will and praying in agreement with what He says. This type of prayer, combined with proclaiming prophecy and obeying God, allows one to step forward in faith to possess what God has promised according to scripture references in Mark 11:24 and Hebrews 10:36. Patient endurance is needed to continue doing God's will and receive all that He has promised.
14. HEBREWS 10:36 (NLT)
‘Patient endurance is what you
need now, so that you will continue
to do God’s will.
Then you will receive all that He
has promised.’

Theme: Possess the land
Sermon: Possessing actions
Introduction
In its final phase possessing is an action. Possessing all that God has promised us, calls for action. If it remains a concept, it will never become a reality.
I encourage you to step into the next phase of possessing that which God has promised you. It is time for action!
Be ready to run like an athlete in the starting blocks.
Let’s look at some basic action steps we need to take in order to see possessing become a reality.
Main points
Pray
Possessing requires a particular kind of prayer. Let’s call it possessing prayer. It starts with a listening heart, intent on knowing what God says. It is about gaining knowledge about God’s will.
To put it in a nutshell, the definition of possessing prayer is listening with the ears of your heart to learn what God says in order to pray in agreement with what He says.
There are times in which to cry out to God for help and support, and you can be assured that God is committed to hear that kind of prayer. But it is important to know that this type of prayer is about help and will not lead to possessing. We need to know the difference between prayer for help and prayer for possessing.
It is prayed not in desperation but in faith and agreement and will bring about possession.
‘“Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”’
Mark 11:24 (NKJV)
This type of prayer action is the first correct step towards possessing. The prayer of faith is needed for possessing. Pray to possess!
Let’s move on to the next possessing action – proclaiming (prophesying) what God says. It is wise to only start proclaiming when you have prayed through what God has showed you.
2. Proclaim
Prophecy in its purest form means a proclamation from God. A proclamation is an official announcement about a matter of importance.
When we repeat what God has said on His instruction, we are making an official proclamation and it can be called a prophecy. Proclaiming what God says is not just a word about something; it is a word about significance. It is not about a new car or a job but about God’s intent and direction for Kingdom advancement.
Prophecy in terms of possessing is God’s trumpet. We echo what He has said. God uses words, deeds and a prophetic lifestyle to make His proclamations. It is up to us to be faithful and ready to proclaim what He says and not what we think or prefer.
Old Testament prophets such as Isaiah and Hosea spoke some radical words and were sometimes tasked to live out radical actions to proclaim what God wanted to express. Hosea was instructed to marry a prostitute and Isaiah walked around naked and barefoot for three years. Hopefully we will not be instructed to do such radical things!
However, we should be willing to let God make His proclamation through our words and lifestyle in order to possess what He says we can.
Proclaiming is not always declaring our latest revelations to the world or our friends, but rather speaking and responding in a Christlike way in situations. Conducting yourself in a Christlike fashion makes a prophetic statement to this world. Let’s love when there is hate and be honest when everyone else is cheating. This is a prophetic-action life of power that will bring about possessing.
An example of this is the Christian Millionaires Club in the USA where members have adopted the philosophy: ‘We chose to live simply so that others may simply live.’
Prophetic proclamation is a vital next action step in our quest to possess. Let’s be faithful and fearless to proclaim what He tells us to!
Obey
This is the action and powerful part of possessing. Prayer and proclaiming must culminate in action.
Obedience often requires some form of sacrifice as in the case of Abraham obeying God’s instruction to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22).
Naaman, the Syrian army commander who was suffering from leprosy, had to comply with the instruction given by the prophet Elisha before he could experience God’s power in healing (2 Kings 5:9). We should make sure that we are not held up or held back from obeying God by excuses or distractions.
Ultimately, the Kingdom of God is not in words but in power.
God’s power is released upon our actions, with possessing prayer in our hearts and His prophetic word on our lips.
I am reminded of the occasion when the Israelites were poised at the point of finally taking possession of the inheritance God had promised them. This epic event was preceded by the priests taking a step forward – literally putting their feet in the Jordan River.
I sense this is a crucial time for many believers in their journeys towards seeing God’s promises and prophecies become reality. The time has come to take practical steps of obedience.
Step forward.
Step forward. No more retreat – go and possess. Get your feet wet!
As you obey and take action, expect to see God’s power in the same way the priests stepped forward and God parted the waters of the Jordan. They did not only step into the river, they stepped into their inheritance and started to possess.
Once you start taking the actions of prayer, proclamation and obedience, don’t stop! Endure and you will possess.
‘Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.’
Hebrews 10:36 (NLT)
Application
Devote time with God in prayer to see what He will show you – listen, learn and agree.
Proclaim what He says to you in your words and lifestyle.
Obey – step out and act on what He says.
See, speak and act.
Expect to see God’s power in action to bring your possessing into reality!
