FOCUS 2020
Date: 21 September 2014 – morning service
Preacher: Pastor Francois van Niekerk
Theme: Possess the land
Sermon: Planning for possessing
Introduction
Possessing requires planning. Godly planning is needed if you want to go on a successful mission of possessing.
The aim of this message is to inspire and encourage you to become a planner and to plan with God so that you may possess all He has for you.
Text: Proverbs 21:5 (NLT)
‘Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.’
The wise plan with God. Under His guidance our planning will ensure possessing – taking and developing territory for His Kingdom!
Main points
Planning is part of progress
God is a meticulous planner and I encourage you to follow His example. Many events in the Bible such as creation and building the ark and the Tabernacle speak of God’s incredible planning. Israel’s history also shows God’s careful planning coming to fulfilment and how it involved great detail in many people’s lives.
Against this backdrop, I trust that you will be encouraged and motivated to know that God is ready to share His plans for you and to guide you in your personal planning.
When any project in life, even a family holiday, is planned properly with God’s help it has much more chance to succeed. The unplanned may come across as spontaneous and romantic, but it should be reserved for now and again. In general, unplanned also means unprepared.
Let’s plan for progress; plan to succeed.
2. Plan to plan
Failing to plan is planning to fail. I am convinced that most people don’t really engage in proper planning. They just weave their way through life as it happens – maybe doing some planning here and there, but only when they have to. Godly planning greatly increases our progress and prosperity.
Planning does not happen automatically, it requires action. It starts with setting time apart to plan. Plan to plan! Align yourself with God’s plans.
3. The basics of planning
We should plan prayerfully.
‘“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen.”’ (Emphasis added)
Jeremiah 29:11-12 (NLT)
We should start our planning by asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom and input. Don’t attempt to get the perfect plan. Just get started – any plan is better than no plan!
Keep common sense your friend when planning – keep it simple. The process of planning safeguards promise.
These are some planning steps to help you:
Focus your planning on a specific area of life. Even start by just planning your day! Distinguish between different kinds of plans such as a life plan, education plan, financial plan, business plan, family planning, retirement plan, health plan, holiday planning, purchase plan, etc.
Your plan should include the critical elements what, how, who, when (set up a time line) and how much (cost).
Capture your plan. Write down or type out your plan. Share it with credible people and ask for input. Excellent plans are the result of consulting wise people.
Put progressive steps in place and order your actions – where to start and what follows what. (Don’t start marketing before you have your product finalised.)
Evaluate your progress regularly so that you can celebrate important achievements and make adjustments when needed.
Commit your plans to the Lord.
‘Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.’
Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
Keep it balanced, as overplanning can be a pain to others. Planning should not smother creativity or spontaneity.
Be flexible and leave room for life’s eventualities. The longer the term you are covering in your planning, the more you need to leave room for things that may happen or change beyond your control.
I suggest you start with a one-year plan before you progress to three or more years.
Once you have planned, stick to the plan.
Remember the wisdom in Proverbs 21:5 that shortcuts are detours in disguise. Godly planning and hard work bring about sustainable prosperity and possessing!
4. Hatfield planning
With the help of the Holy Spirit, the leadership of Hatfield Christian Church has endeavoured to walk in wise planning. A very fruitful five-year plan was implemented in 2008 and ended in December 2013. I can truly say that God blessed us abundantly during these five years and the majority of the goals were exceeded. I honour the leadership of the church, the Pastoral Team, Management Team, department heads and many ministries and volunteer teams that served wholeheartedly and with great dedication. The fruit of planning with God’s help is sweet! I believe the Lord Himself will reward you. Well done! We saw the power of following a united focus over a period of time. Planning and clear goals helped us to sharpen our focus and faith.
As we considered the future and waited on God, we sensed He instructed us to extend our planning to a seven-year period ending in 2020. We have been certain of one thing from the start. God wants us to continue in the long run to take new territory for His Kingdom and see His influence increase in the world in which we live!
The first steps in this huge task of planning were already taken in October 2012 as we realised that it would require lots of preparation. The plan grew over time and was taken through many different levels of meetings. It included a wide variety of input from leaders and consultation with specialists from within the church and further afield. The plan slowly took shape and grew with much prayer over it.
Today I am happy to say that the implementation has quietly but clearly started at the beginning of 2014 and I would like to share the main objectives of the strategic plan, that has become known as Focus 2020, with you.
The aim is not to share specific steps or goals, as this is part of the detail that each of the four divisions – Pastoral, Equipping, Support Services, and Mobilisation – has done in line with the objectives we sense God has showed us.
