The movie is based on the 2009 "Miracle on the Hudson" incident where US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, struck a flock of geese after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport and lost all engine power. The pilots, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles, were forced to land the plane in the Hudson River where all 155 passengers and crew were safely evacuated. The film depicts the events leading up to the emergency water landing and the subsequent investigation that aimed to prove the pilots' decision wrong but ultimately confirmed they had little other choice to save lives.
