important inventions that changed the world,
including the concept of time, math, the wheel,
sailboats, maps and writing. Mesopotamia is also
defined by a changing succession of ruling bodies
from different areas and cities that seized control
over a period of thousands of years.

4. Mesopotamia is the area

Tigris rivers, north or
northwest of the bottleneck at
Baghdad, in modern Iraq; it is
Al-Jazīrah (“The Island”) of the
Arabs. South of this lies
Babylonia, named after the
city of Babylon
LOCATION OF MESAPOTAMIA CIVILLAIZATION?
5. The discovery of the Sumerian city of Ur has shed light on the
lives of early Mesopotamians. Mesopotamian cities lagged
behind Harappan centers in terms of urban planning, but still
followed a uniform pattern. The city was divided into three
parts – the sacred area, the walled city on the hill and the outer
city. The sacred area consisted of a temple tower or ziggurat
dedicated to the city's patron god.
There were also smaller temples of other gods. This space also
housed a warehouse and offices. People lived in the walled city
and in the outskirts of the city. The houses were built along the
streets and each house had a central courtyard with rooms
attached around it.
