2. This is our first shot in our film
opening which introduces the
surgeon. Her back is to the
audience connoting mystery and
suspense and her face is not
visible creating a sense of how
she has no identity or how she is
not seen as human due to how
evil she is.
We used a flickering effect on
this shot, which was
disorientating for the
audience. As our opening was
a montage we could ignore the
rules of continuity editing. We
also added a visual effect to
make the setting look slightly
darker and creepier once again
connoting horror.
Our music instantly starts at the
beginning of this shot. It begins
more quiet and gets louder and
more intense as the sequence goes
on. The creepy, dark music is a
conventional aspect of a
horror/thriller.
3. Our first credit is the
production company which
is conventional of most film
openings.
We used a text called
‘Horroroid Expanded’
which had an edgy,
scribbled appearance
which is similar to the
font used in the film
opening of ‘Se7en’
4. We used many close
ups in our montage
which included actions
such as this. Here shows
a close up of the
surgeon putting on
gloves. By using a close
up just of the surgeons
hands the audience is
unable to see anything
else therefore the
surgeon is still a
mysterious character
leaving the audience on
edge, wanting to watch
more. Mystery is a
typical convention of
thriller movies as it
keeps the audience
watchingWe used a slow motion effect on this shot which
gave the shot a more ‘edgy’ and ‘creepy’ feel. It
made3 the shot last longer which made the
audience focus on such a small movement.
5. The dark lighting disguises
half of the surgeons face,
once again keeping with
the consistent theme of
mystery and suspense.
Low key/dark lighting is a
typical convention of
horror/thriller films. BY
including typical
conventions of horror it
will sell the film to our
target audience as it may
remind them of previous
films that they have
watched of a similar
genre.
The surgeon is wearing a mask
which is a typical costume for a
surgeon therefore making it clear
to the audience that she is the
surgeon how ever not giving much
away.
The music we used is a
selection of sound effects to
a creepy backing track. With
the mysterious sounds of
‘creaking’ and ‘echoes’ it
adds to the suspense and
the feel of horror.
6. We decide to have our title
close to the beginning of
the opening to introduce
the film. Once again we
used the same font,
‘Horroroid Expanded’
Our title is ‘The surgeon’.
This is a good title as it is
simplistic and easy for
our target audience to
remember. It does not
give too much away
leaving an element of
suspense and mystery to
our film. It is a similar
title to many other
horror/thriller films for
example ‘Psyhco’,
‘Orphan’ and ‘The
Human Centipede’.
In the backfround it shows
messed up papers and diagrams
with splats of blood, this keeps in
with our theme and by using a
blurred effect it makes it unclear
what the papers are however
obvious they belong to the
surgeon. The use of blood is
atypical convention of horror.
7. Here you can see we
used a selection of
props to make our set
look like a real lab. We
used test tubes, fake
blood and beakers etc.
You can also see the
surgeons full
costume which is a
lab coat, mask and
gloves. This also
works well in
disguising the
surgeon and hiding
her identity as well
as making it obvious
she is a surgeon.
8. We used a jump cut and
a trial effect to speed
up the clip to create an
image of how the
surgeon is working fast,
it also works well in the
montage giving it a
more disorientating
feel.
You can see papers which
include scribbled
diagrams of bodies and
writing which is unclear.
9. We had a buzzing sound
effect over our music.
Jumbled up sound
effects are typical
conventions of a
montage especially for
horror/thriller
We had the light
flicker at a fast speed
which would put the
audience on edge.
We also used a low angle to make the light seem bigger,
it could also put the audience in a position where it feels
as if they are the victim and the light is shining in to their
eyes. Introducing a feel of discomfort and confusion.
10. This is now the
beginning of the
first scene therefore
we are now using
continuity editing
and it is no longer a
montage.
We used a POV shot
which puts the
audience in the
position of the
victim. We used a
blurred effect that
gradually came into
focus making it
seem as if it was the
victims eyesight.
The use of the blurred effect also
shows how the victim is confused
and trapped, has no power.
We had sound effects such as heavy
breathing in the background to
represent how the victim is panicking
and scared.
11. By using a POV shot
from a low angle it
shows how the
surgeon has
dominance and
power.
The surgeon is
coming towards
the victim with a
needle this could
put the audience
on edge and is
slightly gory for
viewers that dislike
needles. Gore can
be a typical
convention of
horror.
12. The opening ends with an extreme close
up of the victims eyes shutting. The
audience are unsure if she is dead or not
therefore still having the theme of
suspense leaving the audience wanting to
watch more.
We used an overlapping effect to show
how the victim is falling out of
consciousness and is unaware of her
surroundings. She is helpless.
