2. Waking up in the morning is a crucial moment in the day as it sets the mood for
the rest of the day. One of the tasks is the ritualistic coffee making.
Therefore my design challenge is the following:
I want
Turkish coffee makers
to
feel more at ease
making their Turkish coffee in the morning
because
it will make it easier to enjoy the coffee
and start the day right.
Design Challenge The Oven Tray
3. Turkish coffee making is prone to eruption
because of the fast rising of the coffee when boiling.
A coffee eruption would look as follows and is
a headache in the morning as it would lead to
cleaning the oven which is time consuming.
Final Concept The Oven Tray
Eruption of coffee on oven
4. In the morning there is a higher chance for the eruption
to happen as one would just have woken up
and is focused on the many tasks to do.
Therefore I designed the Oven Tray
which is a removable tray placed under one
burner.
If an eruption occurs one would simply remove the tray
and clean it rather than worry about cleaning
the whole oven.

5. Cross sectional view showing
volcano shape
The Oven Tray has handles to ease handling
and is covered by Teflon for a non-stick coat.
It is also shaped like a volcano to guide the
erupted coffee to the sides.
Final Concept The Oven Tray
6. The prototype was tested by the user as shown in the following images.
User handling Oven Tray Oven Tray testing
The user gave very positive reviews. They said that it was
practical, very intuitive and can also be used for other uses
other than just making Turkish coffee. It could be used
instead of disposable foil paper that is sometimes used as
an alternative. They said that it fits the kitchen very well
and that they would definitely buy it. The handles in the
design are very good.
Outcomes of the User Test The Oven Tray
7. The user also gave very valuable feedback in suggesting
that the Oven Tray be made out of a silver metallic finish
as it would look more contemporary.
In addition the user suggested that an alternative to Teflon be used
as the user fears the presumed health hazards of Teflon.
Lastly the user brought up the question of having it
customizable for different oven sizes and this is taken into
consideration in the next development phase.
The process culminating in the Harris Profile was an excellent way to
qualify the final design. However a very crucial step that was not
advised was a historical background of current designs on the market.
Without it a design could be easily duplicated and the problem would
be poorly researched.
Recommendations The Oven Tray
8. I believe that the final design was to the point
and effective. It is important to take into consideration
the user’s suggestion of a customizable tray in the next
development stage.
The advantages of the design is that it is straight forward,
it does not introduce new concepts that would
disrupt the market of oven accessories, and it is quite intuitive.
It has a very small learning curve and will reduce the stress
of making Turkish coffee in the morning to start the day right.
