1. Abstract:
A survey is conducted to find out whether
engineering is a source of frustration to the
engineers or not.
INTRODUCTION:
We have been listening this time by time that most
of the engineering students blame engineering to
be the main cause of frustration among them, this
has not just affected the mental health of that
person but it has also influenced most of the
students who are planning to study engineering
ahead of their career. It is also a topic of concern
for the parents.
We have seen that our neighbor India have been
deeply affected by this issue and they have not yet
been able to tackle it. Thousands of engineering
students have suicided in India and it is still going
on. One of the most block buster movie of India
“3 IDIOTS” projects the same idea. Since we are
all aware that India affects Pakistani culture and it
also happened in this case, soon after the success
of “3 IDIOTS” question was raised whether it is
also happening in Pakistan or not, but we haven’t
seen any prominent answer to this question or we
can say that this issue is not taken seriously by any
Pakistani Educational Organization.
The main motive of this project was to find out
whether it is happening in Pakistan or it is a
foreign act which is being imposing on Pakistani
society or we are importing this by ourselves as an
effect of globalization. There were many
questions which was waiting for the answer and
no one could answer it until now. So we decided
to find out the answer of all the above questions
because we cannot wait for this problem to grow
its roots as we have seen our neighbor India which
is deeply affected by this problem and until now
they haven’t been successful to tackle it out. We
cannot wait for this cancer to spread in the body;
we have to nip the evil in the bud and for this we
need to answer all the questions which were raised
in the above discussion.
INVESTIGATION:
We further decided to investigate on this matter
and take a look back on the history of these events.
On September 10, 2010 a 30-year-old jobless
engineer committed self-immolation by
sprinkling kerosene oil on his body in Naseerabad
police limits in the wee hours of Thursday. The
deceased was identified as Tariq Shah, resident of
Malakand. He graduated from Peshawar
University. [1]
Sifwat Ghayyur A 23-year-old student of
University of Engineering & Technology (UET)
committed suicide on 13 October,2010 in the
university hostel. He was a resident of Gilgit, was
in his 2nd year Mechanical Engineering. [2]
On March 29, 2011, Principal of Dawood College
of Engineering and Technology (DCET) Salman
Baloch committed suicide here in the premises of
the college on Monday. Police said the deceased
had psychological deficiencies which drove him
to end his life by jumping from the third floor of
the college building. [3]
A distraught engineer of Water and Sanitation
Agency (W.A.S.A.) on September 20, 2012
committed suicide after he did not receive his
salary for three consecutive months. Abdul
Hameed, a Wasa engineer, who was living in a
rented house, was upset as he had not received his
salary for the last three months. Consequently, he
could not arrange for the admission and uniform
of his children, who were chucked out of their
school. [4]
On February 23, 2014 Nazir Iqbal a 28 years old
chemical Engineer committed suicide after killing
his seven family members at their Johar Town
apartment in E-I block, Lahore. [5]
A student of the University of Engineering and
Technology (UET), Lahore committed suicide
on June 15, 2016 after he flunked courses several
times. Arslan Khan, a student of the Department
of Electrical Engineering, took his own life by

He belonged to the 2009 batch and was
constantly failing for the past six years, although
he had received a scholarship from Baluchistan
to study at U.E.T. [6]
These are some of the cases and there would be
many such cases in which people who are related
to engineering had committed suicide in Pakistan.
But these are actually the extreme cases, think of
cases in which people got frustrated due to
engineering, people obviously don’t complain in
police or anywhere else about their frustrations so
we could find out the number of people who got
frustrated due to engineering. There would be
thousands of people who got frustrated due to
engineering but the problem was that how can we
identify them. So, we decided to conduct a survey
to tackle this problem and we generated a survey
form.
During further investigation we found out that the
India was suffering badly on this matter and this
was a major problem in their society On 19th
May,2016 an article was published on BBC with
the title that “Why India's aspiring engineers
are killing themselves” which states, the town of
Kota in northern Rajasthan state is known for its
numerous study centers which help students pass
India's extremely competitive admission exams
for medical and engineering colleges. But high
stress levels mean that the town also has an
alarming rate of suicide among students, writes
the BBC's Shilpa Kannan. According to police
data, 73 students - including five this year - have
taken their lives in Kota in the past five years. [7]
Another Report was published on Zee News
stating that 2449 students committed suicide from
Jan 2009 to Aug 2014 with the conclusion that
most of the students committed suicide for being
scolded for low marks in the exams. [8]
Not only India the highly developed country
America is also suffering from this problem and a
report from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention which is perhaps the largest U.S.
study to compare suicide rates among
occupations ranked Engineering 5th
in suicide
rates among all the professions in America. [9]
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
In order to investigate the reality, we decided that
engineering students are the best source to collect
information as it is understood that person
suffering from a disease can effectively define its
effects and suggest remedies.
The first step taken in this struggle was the
preparation of questionnaire. After that a team
based on three members was formed to conduct
survey and cover two big universities of the city
namely; NED university of engineering and
technology and Karachi University. The target
audience was the engineering students including
seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshies side by
side Google form was also published on social
media to cover several other universities like Sir
Syed University, DHA SUFFA and Usman
Institute of Technology in order to avoid biased
study.
EXPERIMENT 1
(Self-Study Time on daily basis gives desired results.)
Motive
First analysis of our study was to determine the
pressure on the minds of students caused by their
input and expected output because it is impossible
to get good marks without giving the required
self-study time to the studies.
3. Results and Discussion
Results shows insignificant result between these
two groups it means Self-Study Time on daily
basis do not give desired results.
The study showed that only 17% students get their
desired result after giving their best time. We will
not discuss about the time they spend on studies
because it totally depends upon the skill of a
student how quickly he can pick the topic but we
are sure that the most of the students are suffering
from time management and excel at
procrastination and this would obviously lead to
less marks than what they are expecting for
because there is no shortcut of getting good
marks without giving sufficient time to the
studies.
The cure requires dedication and commitment.
Set up a schedule, or set a timer. When you watch
T.V., play video games, or surf the web, set a
timer for 30 minutes or some. Time allocation
helps divide the hours to reasonable amounts so
you are not left at the 11th hour to complete
homework.
Some students just want to take the easy way out
and cheat. They may have jobs after school to
support their family or themselves, which carries
a higher priority for them than school work.
In the same context, many students feel that
excelling in sports is a higher priority than school.
Others may resort to cheating to make up for their
lack of academic motivation or live up to the
standards set up by older siblings or parents.
EXPERIMENT 2
(Competition in academics causes frustration among
Engineers)
Motive
As we are already aware that competition creates
stress and it can have a very negative impact on
a person’s life because this puts extra pressure on
the person and in engineering we have seen that
most of the students are actually the bright
students of their school and colleges so
competition becomes tougher and tougher and
not everyone is able to handle that enormous
pressure and this creates frustration and
depression because they are always in a fear to
left behind in the competition.
Results and Discussion
The study showed that 50% students claim the
competition in academics is the main source of
frustration among students. Results show a very
significant result between these 2 groups it means
we can conclude that Competition in academics
cause frustration among Engineers.
4. There are many healthy ways to deal with
academic pressure. If you don’t feel motivated
about a subject, arrange a study group. Reward
yourself after completing every section. Other
ideas include:
Finish your work at a nearby café
or library if the environment at
home is not the best.
If you play sports or work, take
time to plan your hours to include
more study time as well.
If you know you have a big game
coming up where you will be out
for long practices, work ahead.
Make sure you maintain good
sleeping and eating habits and,
from time to time, go out for a
run, a ride on your bike,
and exercise. These will help
alleviate your stress and get your
body moving
EXPERIMENT 3
(Spoon Feeding in school and colleges cause
difficulties in university life)
Motive
As we are already aware that in Pakistan most of
the students come from the background where
they follow a certain textbooks and study
material are all provided by coaching centers and
students only have to learn those, and the worst
part is that in examination they copy paste the
questions from the textbook exercises and past
papers but when these students join engineering
they have to suffer because you don’t find a text
book in engineering and you have to prepare your
notes by yourself and unseen questions in
examinations increases problem too.
Results and Discussion
Results show a very significant result between
these two groups it means we can conclude that
due to Spoon Feeding in school and colleges cause
difficulties in university life
The study showed that 58.4% students of
engineering universities blame spoon feeding
habit one of the major source of frustration among
engineers. Even some people during survey called
spoon feeding a slow poison to youth’s ability of
thinking. The students on the one hand are not
able to handle their course due to sudden change
in their atmosphere and on the other hand the
heavy rain of mids, assignment projects and vivas
adds fuel to fire. According to study 53% blame
the system of consecutive exams in a small period
of semester leads them to depression.
Some other reasons we found were wastage of
time unconsciously, family pressure and tension
of getting placement in engineering firm leads
them to frustration.
CONCLUSION
The main reason behind this survey form was to
find out whether Pakistani Engineering students
are suffering from the problem of frustration or
we are importing problem from our neighbors
India because we have seen that this problem is
deep in India and they have not yet been able to
tackle this. We have also seen that the recent
Indian Film “3-Idiots” had raised the voice on
Indian system of Education and after this we
have seen many students began to think that this
is also happening in Pakistan and they began to
impose this idea on their selves and we have seen
some of the cases of suicide in Pakistan too and
being an engineer we are also familiar with the
frustration of engineering. So, we wanted to find
out whether it is happening in Pakistan or we are
imposing this on ourselves because if it is
happening then we cannot wait for it to grow its
roots, we have to nip the evil in the bud and for
5. this we need to come up with a convincing
evidence so we can raise our voice and demand
the government to take action. For this we have
come up with the survey result which shows that
engineering causes frustration
Director of the Institute of Applied Psychology
at Punjab University Prof Dr Rukhsana Kausar
while commenting on the issue said that in such
cases a lot of variables had a role. “Students are
vulnerable because of all the pressure put on
them by the society, parents, peers, teachers and
themselves.”
She is of the view that a system of academic
guidance for vulnerable student should be made.
“Our society has become very competitive,
which means that the pressure to succeed has
increased on students. The frustration is higher at
top institutes where the students feel this
pressure more,” Kausar said.
