Tobacco Use in Maine
ď‚· High school students who smoke: 18.1% [Girls: 16.5% Boys: 19.4%]
ď‚· High school males who use smokeless tobacco: 13.4%
ď‚· Kids (under 18) who try cigarettes for the first time each year: 6,200
ď‚· Additional Kids (under 18) who become new regular, daily smokers each year: 1,600
ď‚· Packs of cigarettes bought or smoked by kids in Maine each year: 3.0 million
ď‚· Kids exposed to second hand smoke at home: 79,000
ď‚· Adults in Maine who smoke: 17.3% [Men: 18.9% Women: 15.8% Pregnant Females: 14.6%]
ď‚· Adults in Maine who use smokeless tobacco: 2.3% [Men: 4.1% Women: 0.7%]
Nationwide, youth smoking has declined significantlysince the mid-1990s,butthat decline appears to have slowed. The 2009
Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that the percentage ofhigh school students reporting thatthey have smoked cigarettes in th e
pastmonth decreased slightlyto 19.5 percent in 2009 from 20 percent in 2007. 20.6 percentof U.S. adults (about46 million)
currently smoke, the same rate as 2008 and essentiallyunchanged since 2004,when 20.9 percentsmoked.
Deaths in Maine From Smoking
ď‚· Adults who die each year in Maine from their own smoking: 2,200
ď‚· Adult nonsmokers who die each year from exposure to secondhand smoke: 180
ď‚· Maine kids who have lost at least one parent to a smoking-caused death: 1,100
ď‚· Kids alive in state today who will ultimately die from smoking: 27,000 (given current smoking levels)
Smoking, alone, kills more people each year than alcohol,AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. For
every person in Maine who dies from smoking approximately20 more state residents are suffering from serious smoking-caused
disease and disability,or other tobacco-caused health problems.
Tobacco-Related Monetary Costs in Maine
ď‚· Annual health care expenditures in the State directly caused by tobacco use: $602 million
ď‚· Annual health care expenditures in Maine from secondhand smoke exposure: $18.6 million
 State Medicaid program’s total health expenditures caused by tobacco use: $216.0 million
 Citizens’ state/federal taxes to cover smoking-caused gov’t costs: $354.9 million ($651/household)
ď‚· Smoking-caused productivity losses in Maine: $534 million
ď‚· Smoking-caused health costs and productivity losses per pack sold in Maine: $11.60
The above productivity loss is from smoking-death-shortened work lives, alone. Even larger productivity losses come from
smoking-caused work absences, on-the-job performance declines,and disability-shortened productive work lives. Other non-health
costs caused bytobacco use include directresidential and commercial propertylosses from smoking-caused fires and smoking-
caused cleaning and maintenance costs.
Tobacco Industry Advertising and Other Product Promotion
ď‚· Estimated portion spent in Maine each year: $59.0 million
Research has found thatkids are three times more sensitive to tobacco advertising than adults and are more likely to be infl uenced
to smoke by cigarette marketing than by peer pressure, with one-third of underage smoking experimentation attributable to tobacco
companymarketing.
Maine Government Policies Affecting The Toll of Tobacco in Maine
ď‚· Annual State tobacco prevention spending from tobacco settlement and tax revenues: $9.9 million
[National rank: 7 (with 1 the best), based on percent of CDC recommendation]
ď‚· State cigarette tax per pack: $2.00 [National rank: 11th (average state tax is $1.45 per pack)]
