The Mayans ruled parts of Mexico until they were conquered by the Spanish. They built pyramids to worship their gods and practiced human sacrifice as part of their religion. While the Mayans built large cities and advanced societies, they did not expand their territory beyond what is now southern Mexico and northern Central America.
