Distinguish the Difference between IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings
Many times a customer will call Groschopp looking for a standard or custom motor that needs
to be protected from the surrounding environment involving water, dust, or foreign debris.
When this situation presents itself, Groschopp Application Engineers start to ask questions
about Ingress Protection (IP) rating. As defined in International Standard IEC 60529, the IP Code
classifies and rates the degrees of protection against entrance of foreign objects and liquids.
The IEC standard aims to help users better understand the ratings.
IP ratings can be broken down into two sections - solids and liquids. Groschopp motors come
standard off the shelf with an IP rating of IP44. This means that the motor is protected against
objects down to 1 mm in size and splashing water will not harm the motor.
In some cases, Groschopp’s customers ask for special sealing techniques to be applied to the
motors. These requests are a result of the application specification for a harsh environment or
the presence of liquids in the application. Groschopp’s AC, PM and brushless DC motors can be
configured up to IP66 when needed. The rating ensures that the motor is protected against
dust particles and from the effects of water being sprayed at high pressure from any angle
without harming the motor.

A breakdown to the two digit system for IP numbers is shown in the following tables:
IPXX
First Digit Object Size / Effects Against
0 No protection against contact and ingress of objects
Protected against solid objects down to 50mm, Any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand,
1 but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part
2 Protected against solid objects down to 12.5mm, Fingers or similar objects
3 Protected against objects down to 2.5mm, Tools, thick wires, etc.
4 Protected against objects down to 1mm, Most wires, screws, etc.
Dust Protected, Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to
5 interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete portion against contact
6 Dust Tight, No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact
Second Digit Protected Against
0 Not Protected
1 Vertically falling drops of water (e.g. condensation)
2 Dripping water up to 15° from vertical
3 Spraying water
4 Splashing water
5 Water jets
6 Powerful water jets
7 Immersion up to 1 meter of depth (< 1 meter)
8 Immersion beyond a depth of 1 meter (> 1 meter)
