STILL THE
CICADAS SING
Gregory Gregoriadis takes us on a
boy s journey as he comes of age in
Nazi occupied Athens
Local AuthorMatador®
Still the Cicadas Sing is the story of a boy s spirited survival within a world of Nazi darkness and pervading death.
Written by a man who experienced the Second World War himself as a young boy, the events depicted in this literary
novel will take readers on a journey through Nazi occupied Athens.
What inspired Gregoriadis to write this novel was the lack of knowledge on the role of Greece during the Second
World War. In my travels as a lecturer, I discovered how little was known about the contribution of Greece in
defeating the Nazis, our sacrifices and suffering. I wanted the world to know, Gregoriadis explains.
Having written two novellas in Greek as a young adult, Gregoriadis decided to tell his story of the war through the
eyes of a child. I remember the occupation of Athens by the Germans vividly, Gregoriadis comments. I witnessed
indiscriminate arrests and public executions, I starved during the great famine and was around when the resistance
movement begun. I saw the atrocities during the horrendous civil war that followed.
The novel follows Alkinoos, an Athenian boy whose dreamy world is turned into one of brutal occupation, of
famine and executions. It is a story of the boy s coming of age, of romance with the enemy, a German girl, a Circe
with violet eyes. It is a story of things that are not what they seem to be. Of daring undertakings under the nose of
the Gestapo, of Odyssean heroism, wiliness and wisdom… and of eventual tragedy. An ancient Hellenic world of
pathos and nobleness revisited and relived.
GREGORY GREGORIADIS was born in Athens, Greece. He is Professor Emeritus at the University College London, and is the
Founder of Xenetic Biosciences Inc., a USA-based biotechnology company. He lives in London. Still the Cicadas Sing is his first novel.
