A new local commercial FM radio licence for the Barrow-in-Furness market has
been advertised by Ofcom. The station will cover a population of 65,000
adults, using 200 watts ERP on a single FM frequency that should additionally
cover Dalton-in-Furness, Askam-in-Furness, Millom and possibly Ulverston.
Because of the relatively small population served by the station, Ofcom says it
will give particular attention to applicants’ ability “to maintain the service” for
twelve years, and their ability to “cater for local tastes and interests.”
Barrow is presently served by two local commercial stations: 'The Bay' from
Morecambe, with an adult contemporary music format, and 'Magic 999' from
Preston and Blackpool, playing “classic pop hits” for over-30 year olds. The
closing date for applications is 7 July 2005.
