THE VINTAGE FESTIVAL 2016
Welcome to the 37th Vintage Festival, our biggest annual beano since … well, it’s no. 37 and we
haven’t missed a year. And since we moved to Billingsgate we’ve had more room, more wines, more of
you – and even more fun. Somehow the ancient fish market lends an extra fragrance to what we taste.
Each year scores of our suppliers make the crossing (or at any rate a journey) to meet you, their
precious customers, and to bend your arms. They keep coming (some of them for decades now)
because it means a lot for them to meet the folk they want to please most. This year we have almost
one hundred producers hard at work pouring and chatting – a bit of a grind after two whole days with
a party in the middle. Oh yes, they don’t go to bed early.
Special highlights this year:
(As you’d expect) England’s now world-famous sparkling wine. The Club was in on the ground
floor of the most exciting thing ever to happen to English grape-growers, in their rapidly-increasing
numbers. The world now knows we’ve cracked it: Champagne is no longer on a lonely pinnacle.
Whatever you miss today don’t miss our beautiful bubbles.
The Spanish Quarter, such a huge hit last year, is back with help from our friends at Wines from Spain.
Yes, we love Rioja – but there’s a world beyond too. Reds and whites, rich, fresh, smooth, perky … Try them.
South Africa’s 2015 vintage. The Cape has been coming on at an alarming pace. There’s no better value in
the world at the moment – and the stellar new vintage proves it. We have six producers here to show you.
Our home teams. That’s RedHeads in Barossa and Le Chai au Quai in Bordeaux. Boy, do they compete?
I’m longing to taste the new wines they’ve made myself.
The new Experts’ Choice case. It’s good. I helped choose it. We reveal the winning wines and stage
a series of unmissable ‘Fringe Events’ in the Tasting Theatre.
The Fine Wine Room. There’s a crowd who make a bee-line for it. You’ll need
a £20 upgrade ticket from the Club stand, but you’ll be able to taste super-fine,
super-famous bottles you rarely see on offer.
Catch your breath at The Festival Garden Café and enjoy a selection of English-
themed refreshments. Even a cup of tea. And don’t forget to vote for your
Wine of the Show. Just visit one of our Wine Info stands to vote and see
your favourite accepting a trophy!
Glasses at the ready! See you on the floor.

Wine words and wisdom
Hugh Johnson OBE has written about wine (and
other pressing matters) for 50 years, but how much
can you convey about wine through words alone?
Justin Howard-Sneyd MW discusses this with
Hugh and asks which words convey meaning and
which merely confuse. Your views are important so
come along and join in.

300+ wonderful wines; 100 affable growers. Taste, chat, tweet and mingle!
STEP 1. Look for colour and clarity
Hold your glass over a white background. It should look bright
and inviting. For reds, a purple rim indicates youth; a garnet
rim suggests age. Crisp young whites are usually pale. Older,
richer or sweet whites have deeper colour.
STEP 3. Give it a good rinse around
Take a mouthful and rinse it around. Note the initial sensation.
Dry or sweet, firm or smooth, fruity or savoury, crisp or creamy?
Are these elements nicely balanced? OK you can spit now
(in the spittoons!). Does the flavour linger pleasantly?
That’s a sign of a good wine!
STEP 2. Sniff the wine – twice
Sniff the wine before your swirl it. First impressions count – it
should smell clean and attractive. Swirl the glass and sniff again.
You’ll notice more. What do the aromas remind you of? Fruits?
Flowers? Spices? There are no right or wrong answers.
STEP 4. Note your findings
Writing a few words helps you recall which wines you loved
most. You may even want to rate each wine on a scale of 1-10.
If your unsure mark your first wine as your benchmark and go
up and down from there as you continue to taste new wines.

England has come a long, long way in the last 25
years and so too has its bourgeoning wine industry
which now competes successfully on the world stage
lead by some truly magnificent sparkling wines.
In the vineyards of England, lesser known grapes
such as Seyval Blanc and Madeleine Angevine
have gradually made way for the great grapes of
Champagne. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are now
our two most widely planted varieties.
Suzie Barrie MW writes in Decanter, “there is now
widespread consensus that English sparkling wine
is a world-class product.” There is evidence of that
all around and not least in the fact that Champagne
Taittinger has joined us from across the English
Channel to make bubbly à l’anglaise.
After a hat-trick of great vintages there are many
magnificent wines to be enjoyed. We are celebrating
at the Festival with wines from three estates –
Barbara Laithwaite’s award winning Wyfold vineyard
in South Oxfordshire, the Southridge range from
the acclaimed Ridgeview Estate in Sussex and the
inaugural sparkling rosé from Henry Laithwaite’s
Buckinghamshire vineyard, Harrow Hope.
Taste your way through the range and celebrate with
us the sheer brilliance of 21st century English fizz!

You have to get to know the local growers – there’s
a lot of networking here, too. And the outcome:
masterpieces with real depth, concentration, balance
and long-lasting flavour … superb Grand Cru styles,
even if they don’t say those words on the label.
You just try them and see!
Le Grand Chai – showcasing Bordeaux’s finest:
The very first wines to emerge from Le Chai were
those of our adopted Bordeaux homeland. Bordeaux-
born chief winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua has
contacts like no other! Friendships built up over
decades give us access to the highest-quality grapes.
From Margaux to Pomerol, Pauillac, Saint-Émilion and
the like, our Trophy-winning head winemaker expertly
selects cuvées from Bordeaux’s greatest appellations,
maturing them in fine oak casks within our cool
quayside cellars, then carefully blending them.
We only release these clarets when they are ready
for drinking – delicious modern clarets with luscious
fruit and lots of charm, yet the structure for cellaring,
too. Superb drinking at an affordable price – these fine
clarets embody our winemaking philosophyat Le Chai
– Le Grand Chai from Bordeaux.
Le Chai au Quai is a boutique winery like no other
– a haven of creativity and innovation. It lies within
a grand 19th century cellar in a magical spot on the
banks of the Dordogne, just a hop, skip and a jump
from the charming town of Saint-Émilion. With no
vineyards attached, the winery has the ultimate
freedom to buy grapes from wherever it chooses
– wherever, in fact, it finds the finest quality.
Le Chai au Quai: With our Le Chai au Quai wines
we give our winemakers the freedom to make wines
just how they want – whichever way they believe will
produce the best result in your glass. And these two
mavericks, Jean-Marc Sauboua and Mark Hoddy,
they just love to challenge the rules!
Le Chai serves as a workshop for tiny production
‘specials’. Purposely we have no vineyards of our
own, so they can search out small parcels of grapes
wherever in France they find the finest quality
– often from a few remarkable rows of
ancient vines on a forgotten perch
within the Languedoc or wild
Roussillon, in the very south.

Instantly recognisable as Gewurz for its heady aromatics. The minerally richness comes from its fine terroir.
“Beguilingly pale and intriguingly perfumed, rosé de Provence is not just de rigueur with garlic
and olive oil infused seafood dishes. Increasingly it’s the essential accompaniment to the summer
season here in the UK. Enjoy our wonderful selection.
” Jean-Marc Sauboua, Wine Buyer
“The wines of Alsace are a bridge between Germany and France with a wonderful
character all their own. Pierre Brecht wines come to us from the Gisselbrecht family’s
350 year old cellar in the heart of the region.

Gressingham Duck®
Paxton Whitfield
For over 200 years, Paxton Whitfield has pursued
a passion for cheese, fine food and wine. We pride
ourselves on sourcing and maturing exceptional
cheeses while maintaining the timeless values of
quality and service in all we do, and are excited to
be able to share this heritage with customers this
weekend. We will be offering a range of cheese and
cheese platters, which will perfectly accompany the
outstanding wines that will also be on offer.

The Gressingham duck is a unique breed that first came about
when the small but flavourful wild Mallard was crossed with
the larger Pekin duck giving a meaty, succulent duck with
more breast meat, less fat and a rich gamey flavour. We believe
cooking with duck makes a meal much more memorable as it
tastes wonderful, is one of the healthier meats you can choose
and is easier to cook than you may think. Visit our stand to taste
some delicious duck, take advantage of our exclusive show offers

ROMANIA
“Historically a Latin country
with a strong French influence,
Romania knows how to make
great wine. Its soft, fruity
Pinot Noirs began to cause
a stir in the 1990’s, but it
can be tricky to find the
best offering, given that
Romanians drink most of this
wine themselves; 90% of it,
in fact. Make you feel like
you’re missing out? Get along
to stand 26 where you’ll find
some very tasty offerings.

“For centuries, Hungary has been the star
of Eastern Europe with the most advanced
wine culture in all respects – from its range of
distinctive native grapes to its understanding
of terroir and its wine laws and customs. These
days, Hungary is best known for its superbly
well-made table wines. Yet, among its greatest
treasures are the legendary sweet wines of
Tokaj. The first wine to be knowingly made
from ‘nobly rotten’ grapes – predating even
Bordeaux’s Sauternes.

GERMANY AUSTRIA
NOTES
“Here we have wines
from the dynamic duo of
brothers from Karl May: two
elegant zippy Rieslings, as
well as Weissburgunder, a
rich full bodied white, and
Spätburgunder, Germany’s
version of Pinot Noir. Come
and see what has got all the
critics excited!
Neighbouring Austria’s star
white is Grüner Veltliner, and
we have a couple of excellent
examples here from our old
friends Winzer Krems, and a
small family producer with a
long history, Nastl. In addition,
we have two thrilling red wines
which show the diversity of the
Austrian wine scene.

“As you may have
guessed, we love Portuguese
wines, and we have really
got behind them over the last
decade. What’s the appeal?
Originality for one – there
are grapes here you just
won’t see elsewhere. Quality
too – the country is packed
with great winemaking
talent and some really old,
breathtakingly beautiful
vineyards. And value?
Undoubtedly some of the
best in Europe! Come and
put that claim to the test.

The Spanish Quarter
Try wines from every corner of Spain ...
“The shimmering blue sea, dramatic fog-
enveloped mountains, plains of ochres and
browns: Spain is a vast land of contrasting
colours and light. The land of Miró, Picasso,
and Almodovar; of passionate flamenco in
Andalucía and Hemingway’s Pamplona and
San Fermín in northern Navarra; of fresh cold
fino with fried fish in Jerez, and a bloody, juicy
side of beef in the Basque country. Behind
these extremes, also reflecting the diversity
of Spanish styles and traditions, is wine.
Whether you prefer a glass of cold, tropical
Albariño or a mature, spicy Rioja Reserva,
Spain has never been more exciting and
vibrant. Salud!

61 Your Choice
If you fancy trying your hand
at being an expert wine buyer,
here’s a challenge. Just pop
over to this stand to taste
and rate three brand new
Proseccos and tell us which
one you would buy for us and
why. Your choice will influence
our final buying decision!
The big ticket item here is the
Experts’ Choice. We asked the
world’s best-selling wine writer
Hugh Johnson OBE, Sunday
Times wine columnist Will
Lyons and Master of Wine and
vigneron Justin Howard-Sneyd
to taste hundreds of wines and
choose 12 based on quality,
character, value and wow! factor.
The case will be unveiled to
the general public in May but
Festival goers can taste and
reserve their dozen now at a
special Festival-only price.

The Experts’ Choice – Mixed Dozen
The Experts’ Choice – Fine Wine Six
Four riveting whites and eight utterly magnificent reds
From sun-shower fresh Sancerre to thunderous Barossa Shiraz
Our experts diligently sipped and slurped their way
through hundreds of wines to select this dozen so every
single bottle’s a winner. You have THE best tasting New
Zealand Sauvignon-of-the-moment, Shingle Peak, the
corpulent yet elegant La Voûte Chardonnay and a Gavi to
top all Gavis. Sicily takes the final white slot with Leonardo
Urso’s mesmerizing Chardonnay i Corleonesi. Alongside sit
eight mouthwatering reds including Fabre’s Malbec from
the dizzying heights of Salta Argentina, Puglia’s fascinating
Corsiero Nero and the most seductive Minervois, Cuvée Les
Molières. There are equally succulent treats for lovers of
Aussie Shiraz, oak-aged Rioja, St. Emilion region and more.
There is an old-world bias here confirmed by the most
indescribably delicious Sancerre and old-vine Chablis.
France continues its dominance with a 10-year-old
Cru Bourgeois, the peerless Château Malescasse.
Italy offers brilliant Barbaresco and Spain, the most
splendid Rioja, but Australia has the last word with
Lehman’s immaculate Pastor’s Son Shiraz.

“Although South Africa has been
making wine for three and a half centuries, it
is since 1994 that quality and output have taken
off in a big way. But 1994 was a watershed year
for South Africa; for the country, the people, their
welfare and its wines! Since then it’s been on a
steep trajectory where the quality is improving
every year. And just as we thought it couldn’t get
much better, along came the 2015 vintage!
Every winemaker I know agrees it’s the finest
for a generation thanks to even temperatures,
cool nights and dry weather. Faced with so
many fabulous wines we simply had to expand
the range at this year’s Festival and we are
delighted to welcome along some of the most
serious movers and shakers of South Africa’s
flourishing wine scene.
Nowhere in the world offers as much colour,
diversity and bang for buck quality as South
Africa! I urge you to try every 2015.

  • 3. P.S. Don’t forget your exclusive Vintage Festival offers, save at least 10% on all wines featured, plus FREE delivery – order today! 3 THE VINTAGE FESTIVAL 2016 Welcome to the 37th Vintage Festival, our biggest annual beano since … well, it’s no. 37 and we haven’t missed a year. And since we moved to Billingsgate we’ve had more room, more wines, more of you – and even more fun. Somehow the ancient fish market lends an extra fragrance to what we taste. Each year scores of our suppliers make the crossing (or at any rate a journey) to meet you, their precious customers, and to bend your arms. They keep coming (some of them for decades now) because it means a lot for them to meet the folk they want to please most. This year we have almost one hundred producers hard at work pouring and chatting – a bit of a grind after two whole days with a party in the middle. Oh yes, they don’t go to bed early. Special highlights this year: (As you’d expect) England’s now world-famous sparkling wine. The Club was in on the ground floor of the most exciting thing ever to happen to English grape-growers, in their rapidly-increasing numbers. There’s no better value in the world at the moment – and the stellar new vintage proves it. We reveal the winning wines and stage a series of unmissable ‘Fringe Events’ in the Tasting Theatre. The Fine Wine Room. There’s a crowd who make a bee-line for it. You’ll need a £20 upgrade ticket from the Club stand, but you’ll be able to taste super-fine, super-famous bottles you rarely see on offer. Catch your breath at The Festival Garden Café and enjoy a selection of English- themed refreshments. Even a cup of tea. And don’t forget to vote for your Wine of the Show. Just visit one of our Wine Info stands to vote and see your favourite accepting a trophy! Glasses at the ready! See you on the floor. Hugh Johnson OBE Wine Club President

Presented by Barbara & Henry Laithwaite Presented by our OZ and NZ Buyer Dan Parrott Celebrating fine English fizz Beginning with Theale Vineyard, the Laithwaites have been behind some award-winning UK sparklers for over a decade and this year celebrate the inaugural release of Henry’s Harrow & Hope vintage rosé. Come and taste it while Tom interviews mum Barbara and brother Henry on why English fizz is getting such sparkling reviews. When is warm cool and cold hot? Ever wondered what difference climate makes to a wine? In his job as Buyer for Australia and New Zealand Dan Parrott goes from one extreme to the other on a regular basis. In this fascinating session Dan presents a few hot picks from cool climates plus some very cool wines from warmer regions. Justin Howard-Sneyd MW discusses this with Hugh and asks which words convey meaning and which merely confuse. Your views are important so come along and join in.

  • 7. STEP 1. Look for colour and clarity Hold your glass over a white background. It should look bright and inviting. For reds, a purple rim indicates youth; a garnet rim suggests age. Crisp young whites are usually pale. Older, richer or sweet whites have deeper colour. STEP 3. Give it a good rinse around Take a mouthful and rinse it around. Note the initial sensation. Dry or sweet, firm or smooth, fruity or savoury, crisp or creamy? Are these elements nicely balanced? OK you can spit now (in the spittoons!). Does the flavour linger pleasantly? That’s a sign of a good wine! STEP 2. Sniff the wine – twice Sniff the wine before your swirl it. First impressions count – it should smell clean and attractive. Swirl the glass and sniff again. You’ll notice more. What do the aromas remind you of? Fruits? Flowers? Spices? There are no right or wrong answers. STEP 4. Note your findings Writing a few words helps you recall which wines you loved most. You may even want to rate each wine on a scale of 1-10. If your unsure mark your first wine as your benchmark and go up and down from there as you continue to taste new wines. • 10. 10 Join the conversation #VintageFestival16 England has come a long, long way in the last 25 years and so too has its bourgeoning wine industry which now competes successfully on the world stage lead by some truly magnificent sparkling wines. In the vineyards of England, lesser known grapes such as Seyval Blanc and Madeleine Angevine have gradually made way for the great grapes of Champagne. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are now our two most widely planted varieties. Suzie Barrie MW writes in Decanter, “there is now widespread consensus that English sparkling wine is a world-class product.” There is evidence of that all around and not least in the fact that Champagne Taittinger has joined us from across the English Channel to make bubbly à l’anglaise. After a hat-trick of great vintages there are many magnificent wines to be enjoyed. We are celebrating at the Festival with wines from three estates – Barbara Laithwaite’s award winning Wyfold vineyard in South Oxfordshire, the Southridge range from the acclaimed Ridgeview Estate in Sussex and the inaugural sparkling rosé from Henry Laithwaite’s Buckinghamshire vineyard, Harrow Hope. Taste your way through the range and celebrate with us the sheer brilliance of 21st century English fizz! English – a byword for top quality sparkling wine Win a Tour Winoneof4guidedtours ofthevineyardand wineryhereintheUK Visit Henry and Kaye Laithwaite on Stand 2 during the Festival and be among the first to try their remarkable Harrow Hope Brut Rosé 2013. You can also enter one of four prize draws to visit Harrow Hope and receive a guided tour of the vineyards and winery to discover first hand how the wine is made – you’ll get to taste too! The winner will be announced at the end of each show. Harvest Time at Harrow and Hope WINAVISIT ATSTAND2

Le Chai au Quai “ThinkofLeChaiauQuaiasa‘GrandWineKitchen’.Jean-Marc SaubouaandMarkHoddyworktherelikechefs, mixing, blendingand creatingawholerainbowofdifferentandexcitingwines.” TonyLaithwaite You have to get to know the local growers – there’s a lot of networking here, too. And the outcome: masterpieces with real depth, concentration, balance and long-lasting flavour … superb Grand Cru styles, even if they don’t say those words on the label. You just try them and see! Le Grand Chai – showcasing Bordeaux’s finest: The very first wines to emerge from Le Chai were those of our adopted Bordeaux homeland. Bordeaux- born chief winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua has contacts like no other! Friendships built up over decades give us access to the highest-quality grapes. From Margaux to Pomerol, Pauillac, Saint-Émilion and the like, our Trophy-winning head winemaker expertly selects cuvées from Bordeaux’s greatest appellations, maturing them in fine oak casks within our cool quayside cellars, then carefully blending them. We only release these clarets when they are ready for drinking – delicious modern clarets with luscious fruit and lots of charm, yet the structure for cellaring, too. Superb drinking at an affordable price – these fine clarets embody our winemaking philosophyat Le Chai – Le Grand Chai from Bordeaux. Le Chai au Quai is a boutique winery like no other – a haven of creativity and innovation. It lies within a grand 19th century cellar in a magical spot on the banks of the Dordogne, just a hop, skip and a jump from the charming town of Saint-Émilion. With no vineyards attached, the winery has the ultimate freedom to buy grapes from wherever it chooses – wherever, in fact, it finds the finest quality. Le Chai au Quai: With our Le Chai au Quai wines we give our winemakers the freedom to make wines just how they want – whichever way they believe will produce the best result in your glass. And these two mavericks, Jean-Marc Sauboua and Mark Hoddy, they just love to challenge the rules! Le Chai serves as a workshop for tiny production ‘specials’. Purposely we have no vineyards of our own, so they can search out small parcels of grapes wherever in France they find the finest quality – often from a few remarkable rows of ancient vines on a forgotten perch within the Languedoc or wild Roussillon, in the very south. Come and see what has got all the critics excited! Neighbouring Austria’s star white is Grüner Veltliner, and we have a couple of excellent examples here from our old friends Winzer Krems, and a small family producer with a long history, Nastl. The land of Miró, Picasso, and Almodovar; of passionate flamenco in Andalucía and Hemingway’s Pamplona and San Fermín in northern Navarra; of fresh cold fino with fried fish in Jerez, and a bloody, juicy side of beef in the Basque country. Behind these extremes, also reflecting the diversity of Spanish styles and traditions, is wine. • 50. 50 Join the conversation #VintageFestival16 The Experts’ Choice – Mixed Dozen The Experts’ Choice – Fine Wine Six Four riveting whites and eight utterly magnificent reds From sun-shower fresh Sancerre to thunderous Barossa Shiraz Our experts diligently sipped and slurped their way through hundreds of wines to select this dozen so every single bottle’s a winner. You have THE best tasting New Zealand Sauvignon-of-the-moment, Shingle Peak, the corpulent yet elegant La Voûte Chardonnay and a Gavi to top all Gavis. Sicily takes the final white slot with Leonardo Urso’s mesmerizing Chardonnay i Corleonesi. Alongside sit eight mouthwatering reds including Fabre’s Malbec from the dizzying heights of Salta Argentina, Puglia’s fascinating Corsiero Nero and the most seductive Minervois, Cuvée Les Molières. There are equally succulent treats for lovers of Aussie Shiraz, oak-aged Rioja, St. Emilion region and more. There is an old-world bias here confirmed by the most indescribably delicious Sancerre and old-vine Chablis. France continues its dominance with a 10-year-old Cru Bourgeois, the peerless Château Malescasse. Italy offers brilliant Barbaresco and Spain, the most splendid Rioja, but Australia has the last word with Lehman’s immaculate Pastor’s Son Shiraz. But 1994 was a watershed year for South Africa; for the country, the people, their welfare and its wines! Since then it’s been on a steep trajectory where the quality is improving every year. And just as we thought it couldn’t get much better, along came the 2015 vintage! Every winemaker I know agrees it’s the finest for a generation thanks to even temperatures, cool nights and dry weather. Faced with so many fabulous wines we simply had to expand the range at this year’s Festival and we are delighted to welcome along some of the most serious movers and shakers of South Africa’s flourishing wine scene. Nowhere in the world offers as much colour, diversity and bang for buck quality as South Africa! I urge you to try every 2015. ”Davy Zyw, Wine Buyer NOTES ORDER TODAY FOR YOUR EXCLUSIVE FREE GIFTS See page 9
