Cassava: the multipurpose crop
The majority of agricultural produce is sold raw and at the farm gate,
leading to lower returns for the farmers, and some are wasted because of
high perishability status.
However, potentials exist for improved returns and income from value
addition in the agricultural sector. This involves the development of new
products and creating remunerative markets for higher-value agricultural
commodities. Apart from improving farmers’ incomes, value addition has
the ability to create more job opportunities. The value-added products of
cassava prominent among the processors include garri, fufu, tapioca,
cassava chips, cassava flour, livestock feeds, as well as ethanol and
starch.

Biofortified vitamin A cassava
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is widely prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa.
It afflicts quite a number of pregnant women and children under five
years of age. VAD can lower immunity and impair vision, which can
lead to blindness and even death.
To improve vitamin A nutrient availability, vitamin A biofortified
cassava was released in 2011 in Nigeria. Biofortified cassava contains
enough vitamin A to contribute to improved nutritional status and
reduce vitamin A deficiency.
