  5. 5. MALNUTRITION AND MND IN TOGO/WEST AFRICA : EVIDENCE •IN TOGO (UNICEF, 2005) •35% Children less 6 years are affected by vitamin A deficiency •15 % death of children less than 5 years is due to lack of vitamin A (4000 children could die every year if nothing is done)

MALNUTRITION AND MND IN TOGO/WEST AFRICA : EVIDENCE •IN TOGO (UNICEF, 2005) •83% children from 6 to 36 months are suffering from anemia ( IRON deficiency) •40% of child bearing age women are suffering from anemia ( IRON deficiency) •30% of maternal death are due to anaemia •7.4% of population are affected by IODINE MND

FOOD FORTIFICATION IN TOGO/WEST AFRICA NEW PRACTICE Start 1998 : SALT 2000 : Draft of Policy recommending staple food fortification / Flour, Sugar, …. 2009 : WHEAT FLOUR AND OIL « HKI/GAIN WEAMU » LIMITATIONS Wheat Flour and Oil are not LINKED DIRECTLY TO LOCAL MAIN AGRICULTURE PRODUCTS : MAIZE(Togo 1st country in west Africa consumption per capita, 12 th Worlwide), Rice, Yam, Cassava Wheat flour and oil cant’be used for feeding children 6-36 months age where Malnutrition and MN D are high Very limited communication and population ‘s awareness arround the project on Wheat Flour and oil
