PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AWARDED
$1 MILLION GRANT TO INCREASE STUDENTS’ MATH SKILLS
Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), in partnership with eight other organizations,
received a $1.1 million grant from the Maryland State Department of Education to increase math skills
for more than 400 students.
The 21st
Century Community Learning Centers grant was awarded to the Community School
Improvement Council (CSIC), a collaborative effort spearheaded by Maryland State Delegate
Gerron Levi (23A) with academic, religious and business partners. CSIC received the three-year grant
to create an Advanced Math Camp and Booster Sessions for students in grades 5-12 in five schools.
“The mastery of mathematics is a vital component of every child’s education and contributes to
their overall success in graduating prepared for college and careers,” said Interim Superintendent of
Schools, Dr. William R. Hite, Jr. “We want all of our students to have the ability to compete in the
global economy. Having excellent math skills will enable them to do that.”
The camps will begin in July and will be held at the five PGCPS schools and other sites
throughout the county, including Thomas Claggett and Gaywood elementary schools, Walker Mill and
Thomas Johnson middle schools, DuVal High School, Walker Mill Baptist, Gethsemane United
Methodist, and Reid Temple AME churches, and the Good Luck Community Center.
The Advanced Math Camp and Booster Sessions are designed to assist PGCPS students in
math, science, character education, service learning, and special projects, while assisting parents in
literacy. Students will participate in a six-week summer program, augmented by monthly booster
sessions during the school year. Individual and group computer-based instruction in mathematics,
homework assistance, and robotic enrichment activities will be provided.
Along with PGCPS, partners of CSIC include Maryland State Delegate Gerron Levi, Prince
George’s County Executive Jack B. Johnson, Prince George’s Council members Samuel Dean, Ingrid
Turner and Eric Olson, the Maryland Center at Bowie State University, the Collective Banking Group,
Prince George’s County Parks & Recreation Department, Microsoft, the Patriot Technology Training
Center, Drakeford, Scott and Associates, and Optimum Business Services, Inc..
