ST .MARY-CORWIN FITNESSCLASS
While at the St. Mary-Corwin HPC, I undertook the responsibility ofa variety ofprojects throughout the
internship experience. However,I will be focusing on one specific project. My project consisted ofa
fitness class. The fitness class was tailoredto fit associates who were not at a high level offitness or who
lacked the muscle conditioning to participate in the advanced class. The purposeofthis project was to
create a 4 week workout schedule which would consist oflight cardio and light muscle stability work in
order to entice peopleto come down to the HPC to work out and learn about their fitness. The workout
was cleared by the supervisor and met the fitness guidelines and safety protocols set by ACSM.
I wanted to construct a workout thatwas solely based on increasing the stability ofthe clients’ muscles
and creating a stable foundation to build offin the future. For example, the population I worked with
consistedofpeople who were working in an office setting hunchedovera keyboard for more than 6 hours
at a time, complained oflower back pain, and had the motivation to exercise but notat a high intensity.
Based on the clients’ needs, I built a workout that consistedofab workouts in order to strengthen the core
and relieve the lower back pain, hip workouts in orderto strengthen the muscles which are being sat on
thus not getting the appropriate blood flow or not in the correct posture during the day,and light cardio to
increase the efficiency ofthe heart, and in my opinion, helps clients feel the most fit in the long run with
substantial benefits.
After clearing the workout with my supervisor, I was tasked with constructing a means ofmarketing the
new program. I achievedthis goal through one approach:creating a flyer. This flyerwould be placed in all
of the department mailboxes and I would also do social marketing by going to every section ofthe hospital
and talking to the associates and explaining what the class will entail, what the workout will consists of,
duration ofthe class, and what they’rehoping to achieve in the 4 week endeavor. Venturing outto the
hospital and talking to associates seemed to be the most successful tactic simply due to the person-to-
person interaction. The people who were interested wereable to ask questions on the spot and get to
become acquainted with the people who would be running the class. I think it is crucial for people to have
some sort ofengagementfrom the trainers, becausethe trainers will be able to exhibit their energy and
excitement for the class, which associates wouldtend to pick up on and are more likely to come to the
class.
Another reason I wanted to startthis class is simply due to the lack ofa medium between the advanced
fitness class and simply going to the gym on theirown accord. This class served as a “happy medium” or
transition to understanding fitness and getting started in the gym. This class wouldserveas a small taste
of exercising, but mainly to educate the associates on proper technique, muscle function, and keeping a
positivemindset while exercising. Many ofthe associates were intimidated by the advancedfitness class
and didn’t have the motivation to go to the gym by themselves solely because they were afraid ofinjury or
lacked the knowledge ofwhat workouts to do orhow to do them and especially progression.
During the workouts, (which were run by both interns) one intern would be timing and watching the
clients to ensure they’re making correct movements while the otherintern performedthe workout with
the clients. Eventually, the interns becamemuch more efficient and were able to perform the workouts
with the clients, time the workout, and ensure correcttechnique. After the first week, some clients said
that the workout was too easy to complete, some said it was just right, and a few said it was somewhat
difficult. After discussing the concern with my supervisor, she suggested switching to a timed system in
which the clients have 30 seconds to perform the set. This would covera variety ofintensities and would
be much more ofan individualized workoutbecausethe clients could perform the task at their level of
comfort for the duration ofthe time limit. After the adjustment, the classes becamea lot smoother and
flowed very well.
