2. THE IMPORTANCE OF AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK
Many People often question whether audience feedback is necessary when it
comes to the production of a media text. I have to admit I did use to have the same
ideology but throughout the A2 Task I have changed my opinion. I have come to
the conclusion that not only does audience feedback give you the opportunity to
criticism about your work and ideas on how it can be improved but also can allow
disputes between a group to be settled.
Working in a group. There was often conflict between me and my partner and
which aspects we saw as appropriate for the product. When unsure which
approach we would we would both pitch our argument to our peers and see whom
they thought had the better concept.
3. WHEN???
Audience feedback was gathered consistently through in order to ensure that the
production was both planned and edited well . The digipacks were also evaluated
in order to make them as strong as possible.
When did we receive audience feedback :
Planning :
-Potential Ideas
-Target Audience survey
-Initial Ideas Timeline
-Draft Shooting Script
Post Production :
-Music Video First Cut
-Digipack
-Magazine
4. POTENTIAL IDEAS
Our first taste of audience feedback was when me and Leonie pitched our 3
initial ideas to our peers.
The most important aspects we wanted to takeaway from this feedback was
which concept our peers believed would not only be the easiest to execute
but also the most effective.
After the pitch we asked around our peers which of our product ideas they
liked the best. They selected ‘Something I Need’ as they felt that that is the
idea we were most passionate about and would be easier to execute than
the other two choices. They also believed this is the extract where we had
the greatest ideology of how to execute it well.
WHAT DID I LEARN :
- Which product others felt was most conventional
and effective.
5. TARGET AUDIENCE
Our next audience feedback opportunity was very important as it allowed us
to receive feedback from not just our peers but a wider range of our target
audience.
Through an online survey via supermonkey.com we created a questionnaire
asking our target audience about which of our potential idea concepts they
would like the most.
The information we received back was very useful as it reinforced our
ideology that Ben Haenow was an appropriate choice as a large majority of
our target audience suggested that this was the concept they would like to
see executed the most.
WHAT I LEARNT :
- What my broader target audience expects in a product and which other
the products was preferred by my target audience.
6. INITIAL IDEAS TIMELINE
The initial ideas timeline was the first opportunity to here feedback about the
specific elements of the narrative as opposed to just the concept as a
whole. This included aspects such as the specific events in the narrative
and also how time would be distributed.
We decided to make our feedback anonymous in order to attain people’s
true opinion
The overall concencous was that the lip syncing element where the man is
singing to the girl is too cheesy, therefore ewe listened to our peers are took
this piece out of our product.
WHAT I LEARNT :
Listening to an outisders opinion can often lead to a better product as I feel the
product would have been weaker with lip syncing based within the narrative.
7. DRAFT SHOOTING SCRIPT
Similarly to the initial ideas timeline this is when we could gain criticism
on our running times but now people could also comment on whether
they thought the shot types were effective and also areas for
improvement.
The feedback we received was that the shots were limited and the shots
which we did have were to long. As a result we shortened the longest
shots slightly and also added new shots in order to increase the number
in order to ensure that our audience did not lose interest.
8. FIRST/SECOND CUT
For me this area of audience feedback which was most important as this
feedback could help advance on your product. Whilst the product’s narrative
has already been praised it had yet to be viewed in it’s entirety by an
audience.
The feedback we received was that our narrative was executed well
however we were criticised for having NO PERFORMANCE ELEMENT AT
ALL. This is something we changed as we felt it would make the product
stronger overall. Now looking back at the product I would say that the
feedback from the rough cuts of the videos definitely helped to create a
stronger product.
The Second Cut was when me and Leonie first used audience feedback to
settle a confliction of beliefs. Whilst Leonie liked the titles at the beginning of
the video, I didn’t I thought it looked unprofessional. Our peers decided that
although it was conventional to the genre the font was too big. This is
another aspect we altered in preparation for the final product.
WHAT I LEARNED : Audience Feedback is a good way to settle a
dispute between a media group
9. PRINT ADVERTISEMENT /DIGIPACK
We showcased our initial ancillary drawings to our peers. We
had 3 ideas for the digipacks and 2 ideas for advertisements.
We were praised consistently for our ability to channel the feel
of a real media CD cover and advert through the qualities we
had included (OR Code etc.) When showcasing our work
individuals selected what they liked about each of the pieces.
Several of them suggested we combine several of the ideas
from a variety of our initial ideas. We later did this by
incorporating the ‘Memories’ scrapbook theme for the digipack
itself whilst Leonie’s idea of a rose disc was also approved.
10. CONCLUSION
Overall I have learnt a lot from attaining
audience feedback from my peers and my
target audience.
Not only has it allowed me to improve upon
my work through the suggestions which other
people have said but I have learnt that to
settle some form of dispute in a media group
you should ask a peer.
