2. Telkom, Centurion, South Africa April 2008 – Current
Designation: Solution Integration Infrastructure Lead and Project Manager
Company Profile: Telkom is a wireline and wireless telecommunications provider in South Africa, and operating
in more than 38 countries across the African continent.
Responsibilities:
• Within my role I project manage large Telkom Group Information Technology (TGIT) solutions, end-to-
end, according to the solution value chain, which includes training end users.
• I manage all TGIT (Telkom Group Information Technology) and Next Generation Network
infrastructure related projects end-to-end.
• I facilitate the TGIT (Telkom Group Information Technology) Team and relevant vendors to ensure
that an approved, detailed high level infrastructure architecture design document is provided.
• I monitor and facilitate the process to ensure that the solution planner provides an approved
proposal, including high level approved design and costing for each of the business cases.
• I ensure that funding required for each business case is obtained and allocated timeously.
• I drive procurement of all hardware and software requirements to ensure all orders are placed within
the shortest possible period.
• I assist with the drafting and presentation of high value business cases and motivations.
• I am required to establish and build sound relationships with third party suppliers, vendors and
partners.
• I assist with facilitating /project managing the Software Asset Management /infrastructure
(hardware/software requirements for each of the NGNEC and TGIT related projects, there are
currently 45 projects running.
• I compile detailed quality project schedules or plans within MS Project, including application and
infrastructure activities.
• I effectively manage each project schedule or plan on the share point system (online) and in Microsoft
Project (offline) on an ongoing basis.
• I manage all logged risk, issues and dependencies to closure on the share point system.
• I compile quality reports for each of the projects, uploading onto the share point system weekly.
• I am responsible for managing and delivering large scale, high visibility projects timeously and within
budget.
• I manage and chair various project related status meetings and infrastructure core team meetings, in
accordance with agreed upon governance.
• I adhere to and promote quality assurance principles and procedures.
• I compile and manage spending on the various projects’ approved OPEX and CAPEX budgets.
• I provide detailed input and costing information towards business case content.
• I provide Application and Infrastructure Project Managers guidance in the compilation of a detailed
quality project plan, this includes the baselining thereof.
• I assist in developing matrixes for communication and software compatibility.
• I assist the application and vendor team in:
o Providing an approved version of the detailed infrastructure build specification document, and in
compiling load balancing requirements;
o Completing and providing monitoring and alarm requirements;
o Fast tracking all firewall requests assessment and approval with Corporate Information Security
Group (CISG), as well as the implementation thereof.
• I present infrastructure progress status to TGIT CIOs and other key executive team members monthly.
• I ensure all servers are hardened according to the latest relevant standards, and all supporting
documentation is approved and booked into Telkom’s official documentation system (EDOX).
• I assist CISG in ensuring that the necessary vulnerability scans and policy compliance reports are made
available, and that all vulnerabilities are satisfactorily addressed and final reports are signed off
before any project is implemented into production.
• I coach and mentor new team members on an ongoing basis.
Achievements:
• Successfully implemented a Financial and Resource Management Tool (FARM) throughout the entire
Business Unit;
• Successfully implemented and managed the Action Request System in all 6 Telkom regions, Head
Office and Customer Care Divisions;
• Successfully implemented processes and procedures throughout the entire Business Unit to assist
promoters in managing subordinates’ training and development plans;
• Successfully assisted Telkom Centre for Learning in streamlining Training processes and procedures
throughout Telkom;
• Achieved highest scores in the yearly performance appraisals for the past 17 years;
• Received numerous “Name in Lights” Awards, for outstanding service.
• Successfully managed the implementation of a number of infrastructure related projects within TGIT.
