The Ash / Heat Eye Being Used Worldwide
5. Technology
The dirt associated with coal contains greater amounts of radioactive
isotopes than the coal itself. They are:-
Potassium K40
Uranium Series
Thorium Series
The gamma activity of coal increases with ash content
There are no radio active sources in the instruments
7. What is Ash content and why is it
important?
• Ash is the waste material left after coal is burned, Ash is one
element of the specification when coal is mined, processed
( washed) and sold to the energy sector or cement/steel producers.
• The supplier will have contractual constraints on the ash
percentage limits for production and sale.
• Our competitors use a radiation sources as part of their systems.
• Our use of natural gamma radiation to measure the ash or dirt
content of coal is a much safer, more cost-effective option. It
involves no health and safety issues, no specialist de-
commissioning procedures that are necessary with radioactive
techniques and it therefore minimises risks and protects workers
and ultimately the business.

12. The Gamma Eye
Gamma Eye Bucket Monitor Gamma Eye On Belt Monitor
For the Quick Assessment and Separation of Gamma Contaminated Material
The Bucket Monitor provides a quick assessment of
the bulk gamma contamination of excavated
material within the bucket of a mechanical digger.
The digger driver lowers the bucket onto the
monitor frame and once in position the system
automatically makes its measurement:
Red = Higher activity
Amber = Medium activity
Green = OK
The digger driver can then deposit the load in the
appropriate place for subsequent disposal or processing
The Gamma Eye On-Belt Monitor is a fully on-line system
providing a continuous assessment of the gamma activity
within a conveyed load.
These instruments are ideal for sites where significant
quantities of gamma contaminated material need to be
assayed and segregated within a short time frame.
Both these instruments have been developed by Bretby
Gammatech Ltd. in close association with Nuvia Ltd.

EyeGraffix
EyeGraffix is our brand new remote monitoring
software application for the Bretby Gammatech Ash
Eye and Heat Eye ash monitoring systems.
• It allows users to see the current status of the
system and quality of coal being monitored as well
as being able to display historical activity,
generating reports and exporting data in formats
that can be used by other applications.
• The system also alerts users to system problems
or changes on coal quality, using audible alerts,
graphical icons or emails.
• Can monitor multiple systems simultaneously.
21. Features
Connect to up to 25 Ash-Eye/Heat-Eye systems simultaneously.
Alerts user to levels outside of normal limits (ash content, calorific value, etc.).
Shows a graphical representation of current and historical parameters.
Connects to systems over RS232/RS485 serial communications, Fibre-Optic or Ethernet.
Multiple EyeGraffix terminals can be used in a system using a LAN/WAN network to link
together (only one physical connection to each Ash-Eye/Heat-Eye system is required).
Generation of reports in Microsoft™ Excel or generic spreadsheet format.
Multiple reports can be configured to be generated automatically at regular intervals and
emailed to recipients.
System alerts can be notified to users by email, with the ability to define how long an alert
must be active for before being emailed out.
Remote viewing and setting of Ash-Eye/Heat-Eye system parameters and sensor status.
Settings of user defined limits for monitored parameters.
Multi-language support

Site B an Ash Eye with all parameters within limits.
26. If Moisture varies we use a microwave
moisture meter to provide the moisture
signal
This instrument measures the
moisture by detecting the changes in
the microwave signals transmitted
through the coal
