have taken steps to curtail health costs through a
number of policy changes. In Maryland, hospitals are
using a system of analytics to reduce the amount of
time and money spent on avoidable care and
readmissions.

methodologies, is estimated to have saved the
state $121 million over two years by lowering
the complication rate by more than 15

To improve the quality of care in the state,
Colorado created the Colorado Center for
Improving Value in Health Care, which created
a transparent all-payer claims database. This
initiative provides cost and outcome data for
researchers, providers, payers, and consumers
with the goal of using that information for new
policies throughout the healthcare system.
