1. 3 December 1982
When the American hostages from Iran stayed at the Wiesbaden Air Force
Hospital in West Germany, Gary Bloomfield shot most of the photos of the
returnees that were later released to both AssociatedPress and United Press
International, and soonafter appeared in national magazines.
Among these were Stars and Stripes newspaper, January 24, 1981; The
WashingtonStar, January 23, 24 and 25; WiesbadenerKurier, January 24 and
25; The New York Daily News, January 24, The New York Times, January 24;
Chicago Tribune, January 24; Newsweekmagazine, February 2; and Germany’s
Quick magazine, February 5.
On April 10th, 1981, Secretary of Defense CasparWeinberger visited an American
compound on the East/West German border. Gary Bloomfield was the only
photographer allowed access to Secretary Weinberger during his border briefing
(which tookplace on an observation tower overlooking the border), and his shot
with an American soldier stationed at the site. These photos, released that day to
both American and German wire services, appeared in The New York Times,
April 13; Germany’s Der Spiegelmagazine, September 28; and Army magazine,
May 1982.
As Chief of Public Affairs for U.S. Army Europe, I can verify that these photos
were shot by Gary Bloomfield and subsequently released to the major wire
services.
