The Lehigh Valley Indie Film
Guide
Volume 1, Issue 1, February 2015
“The” Guide For The Lehigh Valley and Surrounding Film Scenes.
1
PUBLISHERS LETTER
Welcome to the first issue of the Lehigh Valley Indie Film Guide, a bi-monthly
(every two months) guide for the film makers in and around the Lehigh Valley
area. The area being the LV area as well as Philly to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and
from Kutztown to the Jersey Shore.
This guide is meant to bring together those in the film making community to be
able to create better productions by connecting with those outside of their
immediate network.
We will list anyone who may be involved with film making in some way, from
production companies to MUAs, SFX artists to foley artists and much more. The
guide will never be done as new listings are added and companies who no longer exist are scratched out.
The guide will also be used as a marketing and promotional tool to bring others from outside our little
neck of the woods who may not have thought of shooting here in the Valley for a number of reasons.
Our guide will be coded to easily follow changes for quick scanning of new or updated and outdated info.

Costume Department:
The Do's and Don'ts of Creating a Wardrobe for Your Independent Movie
Okay so you've written your movie, cast your actors, and are getting prepped to shoot. A good
portion of that preparation should be placed on creating a cohesive wardrobe for your film. Here
are several Do's and Don'ts for ensuring that everyone looks as amazing as possible.
Do check out the wardrobe at least a week before you start shooting. It can be very
tempting, especially on ultra low budget sets to trust the talent to bring along their own clothes to
shoot in. This isn't a bad idea but it can become one if you don't insist on seeing your actors in
every piece they plan on wearing prior to filming. Checking out the clothes before you shoot
provides you with a chance to notice if there are going to be any problems relative to fit or
feasibility.
Don't pick out clothes covered in brand names. Unless a clothing company is helping to
sponsor your production in exchange for product placement, it can be more trouble than it's
worth to have your actors wearing clothes covered in labels and branded graphics as these
things may ultimately need to be blurred out based on where the film is being shown.
Do consider all of the resources that are possible. While you've likely considered what's
available in the actor's closets and pieces that you may have seen in stores, it may also benefit
you to looked to local theaters to see if they have wardrobe or costumers who may also be of
assistance.
Don't be afraid of doing a little DIY to get pieces you need. If you don't sew or don't have
someone on your crew capable of sewing then DIY projects can seem daunting but they don't
have to be e.g. an oversized button down shirt can easily become a cute cocktail style dress
without altering it at all (http://www.beadandcord.com/clipper/ella.hart.1368608/diy-clothes-diy-
refashion-10893/53299.html) or an ordinary sweater can become something so much more
swanky with just some spray paint and time (http://runwaydiy.com/2011/10/12/diy-stella-
mccartney-gold-plated-sweater-dress/).
Do look for opportunity to save money on costly pieces. There are some things that you
may need that you can't source from the closets of your actors or find inexpensively. However
you may still be able to get them. If you happen to need something like a very specific type of
costume or a great evening gown it may benefit you to attempt bartering with a local shop or
boutique. In exchange for allowing you to borrow the piece consider that you can offer them a
mention in the credits of the movie or if feasible find a way to fit their store into your shoot. Note
that in instances like this it may be beneficial for you to leave a deposit or provide dry cleaning.
15
Don't purchase pieces that are super trendy. If you're shooting a movie that's meant to be
set in the “Present Day” as opposed to in a particular year then pieces that are on trend right
now will serve to inadvertently date your movie.
Do utilize as many basic pieces as possible and get back-ups whenever possible.
Things like jeans and plain t-shirts can be inexpensive and are common enough that they won't
seem out of place in most movies. In selecting these pieces keep an eye out on sales and close
outs so that you can buy extras of items that may get damaged or will need to be worn for
extensive periods of time.
Don't forget to pack a mini stylist kit, especially if there's no one designated to handle
wardrobe on set. Make sure that you have stain removal pens, deodorant removal sponges
(https://hollywoodfashionsecrets.com/product/deodorant-stain-removing-sponge/), nipple
concealers for any sheer or thin pieces (https://hollywoodfashionsecrets.com/product-
category/no-show-concealers/) and items peel and toss strapless panties which super helpful if
you're shooting a nude scene and your actors don't actually want to be nude
(http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/products/shibue-couture-peel-and-toss-disposable-
strapless-panty). Additionally, you may also want to invest in a small, portable steamer.

Interview: William D. Prystauk
Interview with local film maker and author William D. Prystauk.
1. When did you get into film making?
A. My friend, Paul J. Williams, asked me to produce his short police drama, STABLE in 2012. I
assisted him with casting and became the on set still photographer as well.
2. What was your "push", what made you decide to produce films?
A. As a screenwriter, I knew in order to have a script produced, I’d have to do it myself. In
today’s market and with a still indeterminate economy, there’s just no other way. I have several
award-winning screenplays collecting dust, so I knew I just had to do something. After all, it’s
hard to entertain people if cannot engage the creative material.
3. What projects do you have out now, if any and where can people get/view them?
A. In 2014, I directed my short TIGERS IN THE SOUP, and produced and directed another Paul
J. Williams short, the 30-minute crime thriller, CASE #5930. Right now, TIGERS has appeared
in one festival, and I’m awaiting word on others. CASE #5930 is in the final stages of editing
before we submit to festivals.
STABLE is available here: http://www.productionhub.com/video/view.aspx?item=11974
In 2013, the Advanced Film Students at New Jersey Film School turned my short horror script,
TOO MANY PREDATORS, into a film, which won third place at the MoviePoet Short Film
Contest: http://vimeo.com/54583103
4. Who or what inspires you and your films?
A. My brain is always on, and if a great character or killer story line oozes up from my
unconscious, I have to write that script. If the script is solid (after revisions and table reads, of
course), then I’m inspired to make the film.
5. What type of projects do you work on? (comedy, horror, etc.)
A. I love horror, thriller, and sci-fi – and all in a dramatic vein. However, if the story’s amazing, I
don’t really care about genre. So if someone approaches me with an excellent story, then I’ll do
my best to help make it happen.
If I have a story idea I love, I’ll write with abandon, regardless of genre.
6. What is your goal? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A. Whoa. The goal is to produce and direct a low-budget feature by then – if not two! Otherwise,
17
I have several books on the way, and the hope is that someone will enjoy one of them enough to
want to see the dust covered screenplay that inspired the novel…
7. What is the hardest part of film making?
A. Money. Above and below the line talent can be found anywhere, which is awesome, but the
lack of funding usually puts a damper on the fun of creating.
8. What is the easiest part?
A. Directing. All one has to do is make certain the right people are in place, and doing what they
do best. This means a director shouldn’t micro-manage, and simply trust those professionals
around him or her.
9. Any tips for those starting out?
A. Here’s some… Watch films and read scripts – and if you can’t tell great works from bad ones,
don’t make a movie. Your film only works if you have a viable script; therefore, have table reads
and listen to constructive feedback before moving forward. Surround yourself with people who
know what they’re doing and have a passion for the medium, and respect them for their
expertise. Make certain you have your locations secured for shooting as soon as possible. Don’t
cast friends and family unless they’re genuine actors. If someone doesn’t fit in with the little film
family you’ve created, that person has to go. Make sure you feed cast and crew well because a
movie marches on its stomach. On set, don’t be a jerk to people. Although everyone counts
when it comes to cast and crew, two people have the greatest impact on your final cut:
cinematographer and editor, so don’t skimp on getting the best people possible.
If you decide to have a “world premier” at your local theatre for friends and family, don’t ask
them, “Did you like it?” when they exit the venue. Otherwise, you will paint them into a corner
and receive a dishonest response. Let them come to you if they have something wonderful to
say.
Every time you see a film, you are witnessing a small miracle because making movies takes
great collaborative artistic effort, and as we’ve seen with JODOROWSKY’S DUNE and LOST
IN LA MANCHA, even giant productions can fall apart. So be cool and trust those around you to
help make it happen.
10. What other projects are you working on?
A. I’m rewriting a low-budget dramatic science fiction feature script, and I am taking notes for a
horror feature.
My novel, the hard-boiled crime thriller BLOODLETTING, has been released in paperback, as
well as on Kindle and Nook. The story has been adapted from my screenplay of the same name,
18
which led in the mystery category, and ultimately won second place overall at the Screenwriters
Showcase Screenplay Contest in 2006. Of course, I’d love to see the book made into a film.

DIY: Steadi-cam
Many a year ago, when I was partners in N.E.T.
Film/Video, we had a need for a steadi-cam. The
scene called for a shot of a character walking
around another character and hand-holding it was
not cutting it.
This was back in the days when the only steadi-
cam option was the professional one oor the smaller
hand held version which was still several hundred
dollars.
Enter Google, with a few minutes of Google I found
a hand made option that, back then, cost about
$20.00.
We are not going to show you how to build one here
as there are far too many options (such as the
example to the right) to give them justice. Instead,
we will link to several options, starting with the one
we used way back then and getting more
sophisticated as we go.
Let's start with a very basic, but very usable and decent one:
Her is the ugliness that we used. Again, worked great: http://littlegreatideas.com/stabilizer/diy/
This one is a bit more sophisticated, but looks much better than ours did:
http://www.diyphotography.net/how-bulid-30-diy-steadycam/
Another very nice looking one, a bit more work too:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Solid-Steadicam-below-20-GoPro-vdslr-dslr/?ALLSTEPS
Another great one:

Article: Producers
Hello everyone,
Over the next few issues I am going to cover some basics of who's who in the production of a
film (whether it be a major film, a documentary, music video or web series), starting with the
Producer.
Producers
A movie producer is the person responsible for making sure an appealing, high-quality movie is
produced on time and within budget. That means supervising and packaging the project from
conception to distribution to theaters, while interfacing with the studio and managing the work of
hundreds of individuals.
Responsibilities include:
Preproduction
• Find material from a book or script.
• Get the script into good enough shape to attract a director (and studio, if this is not a studio-
initiated production).
• Secure financing for the film, if it is not being made for a studio.
• Choose the director and other parts of the creative team.
• Cast the actors, working with the director.
• Determine locations and budget.
• Decide on cinematographer and special effects.
• Hire a production team including crew and producers.
• Develop a shooting schedule.
• Create a detailed plan of action for production.
Production
• Offer creative suggestions to the director.
• Handle problems with actors or creative staff.
• Monitor production timetable and budget.
26
• Review video dailies, the film shot each day.
Postproduction
• Discuss order and selection of scenes with the director.
• Review the fine cut of the film after it is edited.
• In some cases, polish, revise and restructure the film to create the final cut.
• Work with a distributor to secure distribution for the film. This may include showing the
distributors the final cut of the film.
• Review the distributor's advertising campaign for the film.
That is a lot of stuff. It sure is, so if you're doing all of this, then you are the Producer.

The Sand Lot
Have you ever shot on a beach? If you haven't yet, sand gets 'everywhere”, literally. Here are a
few tips on keeping your gear sand free and in good working order.
1. Wrap all of your gear in “clear” garbage bags. This lets you see the contents without
needing to open every bag.
2. Only take it out when it is needed and replace it as soon as it is no longer needed.
3. Clean every nook and cranny with a blower brush or a blower if the hairs may impede
performance if they come out.
4. Use the item in the bag if possible. Such as, recording equipment. No need to take it out
of the bag, just plug in the cables, tie wrap the bag around the cables and you're set.
5. At the end of the day, give everything a quick cleaning and you should have no problems.

We will list anyone who may be involved with film making in some way, from production companies to MUAs, SFX artists to foley artists and much more. The guide will never be done as new listings are added and companies who no longer exist are scratched out. • 15. Costume Department: The Do's and Don'ts of Creating a Wardrobe for Your Independent Movie Okay so you've written your movie, cast your actors, and are getting prepped to shoot. A good portion of that preparation should be placed on creating a cohesive wardrobe for your film. Here are several Do's and Don'ts for ensuring that everyone looks as amazing as possible. Do check out the wardrobe at least a week before you start shooting. It can be very tempting, especially on ultra low budget sets to trust the talent to bring along their own clothes to shoot in. This isn't a bad idea but it can become one if you don't insist on seeing your actors in every piece they plan on wearing prior to filming. Checking out the clothes before you shoot provides you with a chance to notice if there are going to be any problems relative to fit or feasibility. Don't pick out clothes covered in brand names. Unless a clothing company is helping to sponsor your production in exchange for product placement, it can be more trouble than it's worth to have your actors wearing clothes covered in labels and branded graphics as these things may ultimately need to be blurred out based on where the film is being shown. Do consider all of the resources that are possible. While you've likely considered what's available in the actor's closets and pieces that you may have seen in stores, it may also benefit you to looked to local theaters to see if they have wardrobe or costumers who may also be of assistance. Don't be afraid of doing a little DIY to get pieces you need. If you don't sew or don't have someone on your crew capable of sewing then DIY projects can seem daunting but they don't have to be e.g. an oversized button down shirt can easily become a cute cocktail style dress without altering it at all (http://www.beadandcord.com/clipper/ella.hart.1368608/diy-clothes-diy- refashion-10893/53299.html) or an ordinary sweater can become something so much more swanky with just some spray paint and time (http://runwaydiy.com/2011/10/12/diy-stella- mccartney-gold-plated-sweater-dress/). Do look for opportunity to save money on costly pieces. There are some things that you may need that you can't source from the closets of your actors or find inexpensively. However you may still be able to get them. If you happen to need something like a very specific type of costume or a great evening gown it may benefit you to attempt bartering with a local shop or boutique. In exchange for allowing you to borrow the piece consider that you can offer them a mention in the credits of the movie or if feasible find a way to fit their store into your shoot. Note that in instances like this it may be beneficial for you to leave a deposit or provide dry cleaning. 15
  • 16. Don't purchase pieces that are super trendy. If you're shooting a movie that's meant to be set in the “Present Day” as opposed to in a particular year then pieces that are on trend right now will serve to inadvertently date your movie. Do utilize as many basic pieces as possible and get back-ups whenever possible. Things like jeans and plain t-shirts can be inexpensive and are common enough that they won't seem out of place in most movies. In selecting these pieces keep an eye out on sales and close outs so that you can buy extras of items that may get damaged or will need to be worn for extensive periods of time. Don't forget to pack a mini stylist kit, especially if there's no one designated to handle wardrobe on set. Make sure that you have stain removal pens, deodorant removal sponges (https://hollywoodfashionsecrets.com/product/deodorant-stain-removing-sponge/), nipple concealers for any sheer or thin pieces (https://hollywoodfashionsecrets.com/product- category/no-show-concealers/) and items peel and toss strapless panties which super helpful if you're shooting a nude scene and your actors don't actually want to be nude (http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/products/shibue-couture-peel-and-toss-disposable- strapless-panty). Additionally, you may also want to invest in a small, portable steamer. Tiffany Brown Wardrobe Specialist tiffany@hoopsandbrown.co 16
  • 17. Interview: William D. Prystauk Interview with local film maker and author William D. Prystauk. 1. When did you get into film making? A. My friend, Paul J. Williams, asked me to produce his short police drama, STABLE in 2012. I assisted him with casting and became the on set still photographer as well. 2. What was your "push", what made you decide to produce films? A. As a screenwriter, I knew in order to have a script produced, I’d have to do it myself. In today’s market and with a still indeterminate economy, there’s just no other way. I have several award-winning screenplays collecting dust, so I knew I just had to do something. After all, it’s hard to entertain people if cannot engage the creative material. 3. What projects do you have out now, if any and where can people get/view them? A. In 2014, I directed my short TIGERS IN THE SOUP, and produced and directed another Paul J. Williams short, the 30-minute crime thriller, CASE #5930. Right now, TIGERS has appeared in one festival, and I’m awaiting word on others. CASE #5930 is in the final stages of editing before we submit to festivals. STABLE is available here: http://www.productionhub.com/video/view.aspx?item=11974 In 2013, the Advanced Film Students at New Jersey Film School turned my short horror script, TOO MANY PREDATORS, into a film, which won third place at the MoviePoet Short Film Contest: http://vimeo.com/54583103 4. Who or what inspires you and your films? A. My brain is always on, and if a great character or killer story line oozes up from my unconscious, I have to write that script. If the script is solid (after revisions and table reads, of course), then I’m inspired to make the film. 5. What type of projects do you work on? (comedy, horror, etc.) A. I love horror, thriller, and sci-fi – and all in a dramatic vein. However, if the story’s amazing, I don’t really care about genre. So if someone approaches me with an excellent story, then I’ll do my best to help make it happen. If I have a story idea I love, I’ll write with abandon, regardless of genre. 6. What is your goal? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? A. Whoa. The goal is to produce and direct a low-budget feature by then – if not two! Otherwise, 17
  • 18. I have several books on the way, and the hope is that someone will enjoy one of them enough to want to see the dust covered screenplay that inspired the novel… 7. What is the hardest part of film making? A. Money. Above and below the line talent can be found anywhere, which is awesome, but the lack of funding usually puts a damper on the fun of creating. 8. What is the easiest part? A. Directing. All one has to do is make certain the right people are in place, and doing what they do best. This means a director shouldn’t micro-manage, and simply trust those professionals around him or her. 9. Any tips for those starting out? A. Here’s some… Watch films and read scripts – and if you can’t tell great works from bad ones, don’t make a movie. Your film only works if you have a viable script; therefore, have table reads and listen to constructive feedback before moving forward. Surround yourself with people who know what they’re doing and have a passion for the medium, and respect them for their expertise. Make certain you have your locations secured for shooting as soon as possible. Don’t cast friends and family unless they’re genuine actors. If someone doesn’t fit in with the little film family you’ve created, that person has to go. Make sure you feed cast and crew well because a movie marches on its stomach. On set, don’t be a jerk to people. Although everyone counts when it comes to cast and crew, two people have the greatest impact on your final cut: cinematographer and editor, so don’t skimp on getting the best people possible. If you decide to have a “world premier” at your local theatre for friends and family, don’t ask them, “Did you like it?” when they exit the venue. Otherwise, you will paint them into a corner and receive a dishonest response. Let them come to you if they have something wonderful to say. Every time you see a film, you are witnessing a small miracle because making movies takes great collaborative artistic effort, and as we’ve seen with JODOROWSKY’S DUNE and LOST IN LA MANCHA, even giant productions can fall apart. So be cool and trust those around you to help make it happen. 10. What other projects are you working on? A. I’m rewriting a low-budget dramatic science fiction feature script, and I am taking notes for a horror feature. My novel, the hard-boiled crime thriller BLOODLETTING, has been released in paperback, as well as on Kindle and Nook. The story has been adapted from my screenplay of the same name, 18

  • 23. DIY: Steadi-cam Many a year ago, when I was partners in N.E.T. Film/Video, we had a need for a steadi-cam. The scene called for a shot of a character walking around another character and hand-holding it was not cutting it. This was back in the days when the only steadi- cam option was the professional one oor the smaller hand held version which was still several hundred dollars. Enter Google, with a few minutes of Google I found a hand made option that, back then, cost about $20.00. We are not going to show you how to build one here as there are far too many options (such as the example to the right) to give them justice. Instead, we will link to several options, starting with the one we used way back then and getting more sophisticated as we go. Let's start with a very basic, but very usable and decent one: Her is the ugliness that we used. Again, worked great: http://littlegreatideas.com/stabilizer/diy/ This one is a bit more sophisticated, but looks much better than ours did: http://www.diyphotography.net/how-bulid-30-diy-steadycam/ Another very nice looking one, a bit more work too: http://www.instructables.com/id/Solid-Steadicam-below-20-GoPro-vdslr-dslr/?ALLSTEPS Another great one: http://lifehacker.com/the-krotocam-is-a-diy-steadicam-you-can-build-on-the-ch-512048540 Here is some video using the version that we had used many years ago (Not our footage). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztvjeJn-SQk Video of low angle run down a hall. 23

  • 26. Article: Producers Hello everyone, Over the next few issues I am going to cover some basics of who's who in the production of a film (whether it be a major film, a documentary, music video or web series), starting with the Producer. Producers A movie producer is the person responsible for making sure an appealing, high-quality movie is produced on time and within budget. That means supervising and packaging the project from conception to distribution to theaters, while interfacing with the studio and managing the work of hundreds of individuals. Responsibilities include: Preproduction • Find material from a book or script. • Get the script into good enough shape to attract a director (and studio, if this is not a studio- initiated production). Production • Offer creative suggestions to the director. • Handle problems with actors or creative staff. • Monitor production timetable and budget. 26
  • 27. • Review video dailies, the film shot each day. Postproduction • Discuss order and selection of scenes with the director. • Review the fine cut of the film after it is edited. • In some cases, polish, revise and restructure the film to create the final cut. • Work with a distributor to secure distribution for the film. This may include showing the distributors the final cut of the film. • Review the distributor's advertising campaign for the film. That is a lot of stuff. It sure is, so if you're doing all of this, then you are the Producer. 27

  • 33. The Sand Lot Have you ever shot on a beach? If you haven't yet, sand gets 'everywhere”, literally. Here are a few tips on keeping your gear sand free and in good working order. 1. Wrap all of your gear in “clear” garbage bags. This lets you see the contents without needing to open every bag. 2. Only take it out when it is needed and replace it as soon as it is no longer needed. 3. Clean every nook and cranny with a blower brush or a blower if the hairs may impede performance if they come out. 4. Use the item in the bag if possible. Such as, recording equipment. No need to take it out of the bag, just plug in the cables, tie wrap the bag around the cables and you're set. 5. At the end of the day, give everything a quick cleaning and you should have no problems. 33
