1. What do
I do when I just
can’t get along with
someone no matter
how hard I try?
Just let me
do it. I'm the pro
here.
Argh. He’s
just soooo
arrogant.
Not clicking with someone, and even having
significant personality clashes, is relatively common.
Most people have someone or someones like this in
their life at almost any given time.
Do you remember the verse where Jesus said
that even sinners love their friends?
Luke 6:32 (NIV) If you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those
who love them.
Well, that’s because it’s pretty easy for anyone
to love those who love them and whom they already
love. But as David Brandt Berg put it, if you don’t love
someone, “[they] can’t even walk across the floor
without you finding fault with the way they do it.1
”
* Perspective. Zoom out from what’s bugging you
or driving you crazy; project ahead. One or two
years from now, will this seem like a big issue or
problem? Right now, it’s in your face and seems
like a pretty big deal, but in the bigger scope of
life and your future, is this really a deal breaker?
Yup, it’s
pretty small in
comparison to
eternity.
The challenge, difficulty, or test of character is to
love someone who isn’t easy for you to love. You
should try to look at it as a challenge that you can
take up. There are a few attitudes and practical
things that you can try in order to progress in your
love and acceptance of others:

since I’ve learned how to
not let the little
things bug me.
* Take the good from the situation. Realize that
if it wasn’t this person bothering you, it just
might be somebody else, because God allows
these situations in your life to teach you valuable
lessons of humility, love, and desperation. If you
felt you had sufficient love for this person, then
you wouldn’t need Jesus’ love in your heart for
them. You are also learning more about yourself
and how to handle others and interact with
them, and these are important life lessons that
will be an asset to you.
* Love anyway. Love, and
especially Jesus’ love, is very
powerful. So if you love and
keep loving, things will improve.
If you decide that you are going
to like this person no matter
what, or at least treat them with
love and respect, then things
will improve. As wisely stated in
the book of Proverbs, “A gentle
answer turns away wrath”
(Proverbs 15:1 NIV).
Doing these things can help
you and be a boost in your
interaction with someone whom
you’re having a hard time getting
along with. But the best and
most effective thing to do is ask
the Lord for His counsel and to
follow what He shows you.
You should
be doing this
another way.
I’m
the best at
this game.
And I, with
my ninja skills,
caught the
huge rat.
Wow, you’re
so brave. I’m
proud of you.
We just
can’t get along. Jeff
always thinks he knows
better, and it really
annoys me.
Sniff. I blew
up at Jeff again.
I’ve been trying
so hard. …
Did I tell
you that I’ve been
learning programming,
and it’s so easy
for me?
And don’t give up. If you don’t see the fruit of your
efforts, then commit it to the Lord in prayer and
trust Him to bring resolution in His time.
