3. What we already know
• Air transport is an important component in terms of
transport, and we are able to tour South Africa through
the means of regional and long-haul flights.
• International airports are able to have international
flights, therefore being the ‘borders’ of countries.
• Short flights that happen inside a country are called
domestic flights, which airports are also important for.

• An airport that has customs and immigration facilities that can
handle international flights.
• International airports generally have more on offer than National
Airports.
• Runways at international airports are generally longer than
runways at domestic-only airports.

8. King Shaka International Airport
• New airport, completed in
2010.
• 6 domestic airlines and 11
international airlines use this
airport.
• Replaced the old Durban
International Airport in 2010.
• Approximately 5 million
passengers per year.
9. Port Elizabeth International Airport
• 6 domestic airlines use this
airport.
• Handles over 800 tonnes of
cargo annually.
• Approximately 1 million
passengers a year.
10. Bloemfontein Airport
• Also known as Bram Fischer
International Airport.
• Approximately 400 000
passengers a year.
• Three domestic airlines use
this airport.
• Shares a runway with the Air
Force Base in Bloemspruit.
11. Upington Airport
• Longest runway in Africa, with
a length of 4900m.
• Mainly charter flights are
accommodated for.
• Seen as a cargo hub
internationally, as it deals with
most of sub-Saharan Africa.
12. Lanseria International Airport
• Privately owned airport.
• Mostly flies to Cape Town,
Durban and George.
• Can do connecting flights to
international countries through
Cape Town and Durban.
13. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport
• Located just outside of
Nelspruit.
• Serves travellers to the Kruger
National Park.
• Small airport, mostly roofed by
thatch.
• Largest thatched structure in
Africa.
14. Polokwane International Airport
• Formerly known as Pietersburg
International Airport and
Gateway International Airport.
• Approximately 38 000
passengers a year.
• 5 flights on week days to
Johannesburg (includes
connecting flights), and one
flight on each day of the
weekend.

28. Interpretation of Airline Timetables
• Two timetables
-Arrivals
-Departures
• Timetables are put online so that changes can be made more easily.
• Shows info that the passenger needs to make a decision about which
flight to choose.
• Timetables show the departure time and arrival time (keep in mind that
time zones may be different).
• Timetables indicate number of stops that will be made.
• Timetables indicate the name of the flight and the type of aircraft as
well.
