A lesson on drawing Lewis Structures written in mixed Tagalog and English.

1. SIMPLE LEWIS STRUCTURES
Noong last lesson, na-tackle natin ang ionic at covelent bond, kung ano ang mga ito at mga pinagkiba
nila sa isa’t isa. Remember din na ang ending ng discussion natin last time ay mga ionic compounds at
covalent compounds. Ngayon naman, we will look deeper on the structures of these compounds. Paano
ng magkakadikit ang mga atoms ng mga compound na ito sa isa’t isa. Ito ang Lewis Structures na may
formal definition na:
Lewis Structures are diagrams that show the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the
lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule.
Ang paggawa ng Lewis structures ay
makakatulong para maunawaan natin kung paano
ang bonding sa pagitan ng mga atoms sa isang
molecule at mga lone pairs na mayroon ito.
Ang mga Lewis Structures ay mayroong
dalawang types of electron pairs – lone pairs &
bonding pairs.
To draw a Lewis Structure, we follow the
general steps below:
1. Count the total valence electrons of the
molecule. I-add lang mga valence electrons ng
mga atoms.
2. Draw the skeletal structure.
3. Complete the octet per atom.
EXAMPLE 1. Draw the Lewis structure of NF3
(nitrogen trifluoride).
Step 1: Count the total valence electrons of the
molecule
N = 5 valence electrons x 1 atom = 5
F = 7 valence electrons x 3 atoms = 21
So, ang total ay (5+21) = 26 valence electrons.
Ibig sabihin 26 valence electrons ang kailangan
magparticipate sa bonding para mabuo ang NF3.
Step 2. Draw the skeletal structure. Step 3. Complete the octet per atom.
Makikita ninyo na ang total valence electrons na ginamit dito ay 26, kung bibilanging mabuti. Ang
bawat bond ay mayroong 2 valence electrons na pinagshe-share-an ng dalawang atoms. Tignan din na
ang bawat atoms (nonmetals) ay nagsatisfy ng octet rule, na ang bawat atoms ay may 8 valence electrons.
Kaya ang bubusisiin natin ang final answer natin, ganito dapat ang gagawin:

EXAMPLE 2: Draw the Lewis structure of CO2 (carbon dioxide).
