OILTAP® R FOR THE WORLD'S LARGEST FURNACE TRANSFORMER
1. OILTAP® R FORTHE WORLD'S
LARGEST FURNACETRANSFORMER
A new record for MR: Three OILTAP® R units regulate the largest furnace transformer in the world. Its
impressive dimensions: 7.8 meters long, 6.1 meters wide, 7.25 meters high and weighing in at
approximately 300 tons. The transformer is operated by the Turkish steelmaker ICDAS in Balıkesir
(western Turkey).
The humongous new transformer, which is replacing an old 230 MVA transformer, features impressive operating reliability
and cost effectiveness. In addition, it is helping Turkey to secure and expand its position as the world's eighth largest steel
producer.
The record-setting transformer drives an electric arc furnace in which steel scrap is melted and processed into new steel. In
addition to the transformer, the tap changer is also setting records. The through-current in particular is equal to almost 3,000
amperes, pushing the tap changer to the limits of its load capacity. During the melting process, at the secondary winding
current levels reach as high as 130,000 amperes. Controlling these high through-currents is a challenge for both the tap
2. changer and the transformer. This is why ICDAS has put its trust in long-time partners BEST and Maschinenfabrik
Reinhausen (MR).
BEST A.Ş., a Turkish transformer manufacturer, produced the 310 MVA transformer, which is the largest and most powerful
furnace transformer in the world with a length of 7.8 meters, a width of 6.1 meters and a height of 7.25 meters. Ensuring the
smooth operation of this kind of record-breaking transformer requires a tap changer with the highest possible reliability.
That’s why, the responsible parties have chosen the OILTAP® R from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR) --, the tap changer
for the highest voltage and current levels.
The steelworks in Balıkesir has another production line that is also equipped with tap changers from MR. The three tap
changers of the OILTAP® RM type have been working reliably and free of problems for many years. Regular maintenance
by MR service professionals ensures that this reliability will continue for many years to come.
