2. Vaping:
An electronic cigarette or vape is a device that simulates
tobacco smoking. It consists of an atomizer, a power
source such as a battery, and a container such as a cartridge
or tank filled with liquid. Instead of smoke, the user
inhales vapor. As such, using an e-cigarette is often called
"vaping".
Vaping and electronic cigarettes:
Vape pen are the devices that consist of a rechargeable
battery and refillable tank. You can use them again and
again, mix and match different parts and pieces, and
continue to fill with your favorite e-liquid of choice. On
the other hand, electronic cigarettes, are devices that look
similar to traditional cigarettes. They generally consist of a
one-piece unit that you use until it runs out and then throw
it away.

vaping:
• No matter the delivery method, nicotine is addictive.
• The flavors and stabilizers in e-cigarettes can cause
unknown inflammation to delicate lung tissue.
• The length of time spent vaping can be much longer
than smoking a standard cigarette.
• Brain development can be affected.
• Changes in emotions or new behaviors like secrecy
• Dry cough or wheezing
• Scents of fruity odors on skin, breath and clothes
• Strange cylinders, chargers or batteries lying around

Many healthcare professionals ask their patients about alcohol, drug use and smoking, yet
forget to ask about vaping.
The cultural phenomenon of vaping both marijuana and nicotine were billed as a healthy
alternative to smoking and at times even seen as an option to aid in cessation. With the
current body of evidence and the outbreak of EVALI in 2019, it is incumbent upon all
healthcare practitioners to advise patients that vaping should not be considered safer than
smoking and that there are very real and new dangers associated with vaping that still
require further study. Providers must learn more about the dangers of vaping and identify
adverse health effects from this practice in patients. An evidence-based approach to
smoking cessation based on established data and practice patterns is needed.
