Editor's Notes
One of two parts to the over idea of sound in movies.
The other part of the topic.
The Phonograph, Graphophone, and Berliner Gramophone. The first three audio recording and play back devices.
Starting to talk about the physical characteristics of sound.
Different Frequencies of sounds.
Timbre is also known as sound colour, which allows people to determine different sounds even if they are the same pitch and loudness. Example a piano and Oboe.
Reverberation is like an echo but non-directional.
Sound Shadows are one of two ways people determine where a sound is coming from. The other is Temporal Delay.
How sound designers use all the characteristics to design sound for movies.
Ben Burtt was one of the greatest sound designers of all time. He designed the sound for Star Wars and Wall-E along with many other award winning films.
On movie sets everything is fake, and every microphone is places specifically to capture dialogue.
ADR is used to “loop” or replace actors dialogue that is distorted or otherwise unusable.
Foley is used to give rerecorded sound a fuller sound. It also gives the movie all the smaller effects needed, such as footsteps and doors opening.
Sound Designers and Foley Artists need to put everything together to create the final sound mix for a film.
