17. The journey of him becoming a DJ all began when he was at the
age of eighteen when he travelled to Manchester, UK to visit
his older brother. While he was there he grew an interest in disc
joking and so he wanted to become a part of it and eventually
he decided to become a DJ. Lucky for him, taking the route to
becoming a DJ wasn’t necessarily a struggle for him since he has
had a musical background whilst he was growing up, whereby he
used to play drums in church after his late brother, and his fa-
ther was once in a band called Katenga Harming Bees.
Nathan is very grateful that his beginner days of disc joking were
not as bad as what most people go through when they just get
started in something. What made his beginner days good was
the help he got from his best friend. His best friend was a music
collector and he helped him with music to copy from. However,
at the time he faced quite a few challenges like staying focused
since he was quite a young lad when he began being a DJ. At the
time he began disc joking he was still in school and he also had
two jobs while he was in Manchester hence that made focusing
quite a challenge for him at the time.

When Nathan eventually became a DJ he put in all his effort into
it. He also told himself that he was not going to be any other
kind of DJ, and with that made sure that he worked day and
night in order for him to be be the best in what he does. While he
was working towards his goal of being a unique DJ, he did experi-
ence some competition and his competitor was actually his best
friend who was also once his housemate. His best friend used
to play at a very well known African club that was owned by a
Ugandan family in Manchester, while Nathan at the time only
played gigs in a student area. After a while he eventually started
playing gigs at the big city’s joint which is called Lounge 31, and
according to the DJ working there was a game changer for him.
Playing gigs at this joint helped him get recognition since he
would play five times in a week (weekends inclusive) and he did
his best every time he had a gig at this joint. During one of his
gigs a certain Nigerian man approached him with an offer for
him to play at a new African club, Nathan accepted the offer
since he didn’t hesitate about it. When he played his very first
gig at this African Club’s launch party he had a chance to be in
the newspaper, and according to him that was ‘The birth of DJ
Nathan Tunes’. “I was the talk of the town and everyone want-
ed the experience.” The DJ stated.
He also had a chance to play with big DJ’s like DJ Era, DJ Edu from BBC 1ex-
tra and DJ Fully Focus from the US just to mention a few. He also played for
big artists like Ice Prince, Wande Coal, 2 Face, Nasty C, Iyanya, Terry G and
Dr Sid just to mention a few.
The DJ is also in the music scene and with that he is current-
ly working on an EP which will hopefully be released this year.
“The EP won’t necessarily be a DJ Khaled style; I’m actually
singing on these tracks. So you will get to see me a lot, planning
videos and more collaborations with bigger names and young
fresh talents from Malawi. So be on the look out its about that
time.” Says the DJ. He also worked on some projects with quite
a lot of artists.
As you have read from this article, you may have noticed that
Nathan is quite a go getter and that’s what has practical-
ly gotten him this far. But now that he has gotten to a really
good point in his career you might wonder what keeps him
motivated. Well according to the DJ, his source of motivation is
basically seeing other DJ’s doing big arenas.
Nathan’s career seems to be very inspiring and also quite in-
teresting, but he has faced a minor setback and this is having
trouble to find the right store to get the right gear in Malawi.
Because of that most DJ’s end up using second hand equipment
which is not usually the best quality. “I wish Malawi had a full
Music store good for artists and creative DJs.” Says the DJ.
