Commemorative Speech
Some people say that cooking is an art because to cook you need to select and combine
ingredients using a wide range of tools and methods. However, if sounds are our ingredients,
music would be our cake. Music is like cooking because is a mix of different sounds. But in this
case, Nictofobia does not cook a simple cake; they cook a delicious chocolate. They use quality
ingredients to make this sweet pleasure, but this sweet chocolate is not for our mouth; it is tasted
by our ears and makes them fall in love. Nictofobia is a band that emerged on February 07, 2003.
Nictofobia is my favorite national band, and it is from Caracas, Venezuela. They define its music
style as a musical chocolate. I am sure that you are going to be addicted of this chocolate because
Nictofobia mix Ska, Punk, and Bossa to create this great music style. Before making this speech,
I investigated about the background of this band, and I made a quick interview with the members
in a phone call. Today, I will tell you the main reasons I am a passionate lover of Nictofobia, and
why I want to pay tribute to them.
The first element that made Nictofobia the best is its members. Nictofobia is composed of
three enterprising young men. This Venezuelan power trio is composed of Olberg Sanz (Bass
and Vocal Leader), Victor Ojeda or "Willow” (Guitar), and Carlos Sojo, known as

"Raffly"(drums), have won the affection and respect of the Venezuelan public; they developed
this chocolate style by mixing their favorite kinds of music.
This power trio has good vibes on the stage that makes anyone feel better. Also, they
have a song for each one of us because they manage and fuse a variety of musical styles. “Being
musician is not just standing up on the stage and playing a song; the music is a career than needs
dedication and time, and the people do not see that.” This is what Willow, the guitarist of the
band, told me at the moment of the interview. Also, he said that for being an integrant of
Nictofobia, he had to quit playing soccer, which he had played for 10 years, and traded the ball
for a guitar. These guys had to overcome challenges to achieve their dreams while still focusing
on reality. They not only are dedicated to music; on the contrary, all members of this band have a
professional degree, a normal job and personal responsibilities. However, despite the success
they have achieved, they never forget their roots and their fans. They found the balance between
being a rock star and humility, and this is what makes them such a special band.
Another aspect is that Nictofobia is a fountain of inspiration and a clear example that all
dreams can become true. Being an independent band and reaching the success in my country is
really hard, but they are doing very well. They have already performed over 200 concerts
nationwide. Nictofobia's songs are being played on the national radio; in addition, they have
been interviewed by major television media in Venezuela and have sold around 3000 short

duration discs. Today they are working on their first long duration record which is called, “With
all the toys,” in Spanish, “Con todos los juguetes.” In my opinion, the rhythm, lyrics, voice
potential, and the energy on stage were the tools for the success of this band.
Finally, the variety of Nictofobia style makes them reach a large amount of fans. The
rhythm of their songs has an unpredictable structure, and the lyrics range from the most romantic
to the most extreme rock. As a clear example, I can use one of my favorite songs by of this band
that is “Recuerdos,” or in English, “Memories.” This song has very romantic lyrics with a soft
pop rock rhythm. On the contrary, they have songs with a really fun and less soft music style; for
example, other of my favorites song that is called, “Me haces falta,” in English, “I miss you.”
This song has a Ska Punk Bossa style, but at the same time its’ lyric is about the desire to live
something that does not happen. Nictofobia does not only use Ska, Punk, and Bossa to make its
songs; they also use Reggae, Rock, even Joropo, which is the traditional music of Venezuela.
This band created its’ own style making them the most original band that I have ever seen or
heard. In addition, its performance on stage is awesome. As an example, while Willow plays his
guitar, he jumps and makes crazy turns; in addition, Olberg plays the bass with a deep look and a
style that mixes the serious with the fun and the crazy. Behind them but equally as important is
Raffly, the bad boy of the band, playing the drums in an aggressive way, even when it is a
romantic song.

To summarize this band has been working really hard since its origin. They are three
friends than made their dream come true. However, the dream is not finish; it still alive.
Actually, they are adding more dreams. They know that the road is long, but I am sure
that one day they will be an international band, and I hope to be there to see my favorite band on
the top of the mountain. If you want to have more information about Nictofobia, you can go to its
blog: www.nictofobia.blogspot.com. Remember, do not be shy. They speak English, so they can
answer all your questions. Today, I pay tribute to Nictofobia, a band that creates a musical
chocolate with flavored Venezuela.
