2. Introduction
The Ohio State Buckeyes, playing in the Leaders
Division of the Big Ten Conference, have sent many
great players on to the National Football League. Six
Buckeyes players have won the Heisman Trophy.
In 1944, Leslie "Les" Horvath was the first to win the
trophy, playing the positions of quarterback and
halfback. In 1950, Victor Felix "Vic" Janowicz, who
went on to play for the Washington Redskins, won the
trophy as a junior playing tailback. Howard Albert
"Hopalong" Cassady won the Heisman Trophy in
1955, by the largest margin in history at the time.
Archie Griffin won the trophy twice—in 1974 and
1975—and is the only player ever to have done so.
Edward George Jr. won the Heisman in 1995, and,
most recently, Troy Smith won it in 2006.
