NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
Our Hometown: WJRT
Goal: Build our presence in communities throughout our viewing area to increase ratings and trust.
Role: Producer, Developer
I developed Our Hometown as a way to reach a bigger audience. This was adopted as a weekly segment on ABC12 News This
Morning. I researched a local town and talked face to facewith residents, business owners, and town officials to grasp what
made their town “home.” I used this material to pre-produce elements to use duringa livebroadcastin the town.
By integrating social media and on air promotions I generated a followingand viewer interest in this broadcast.
The liveremote broadcast used multiplecamera crews, talent members, liveinterviews, and livesocial media interaction, all of
which I managed from our control room in Flint.
Trending Stories and Social Media Advancement: WJRT
Goal: IncreaseClicksto ABC12.com
Role: Producer, Social Media Producer,Web Producer
I pride myself in findingtrendingstories before mainstreammedia. Often I will run a story I find using social media (i.e.The
Blue vs. Gold Dress,#Being13, New Barbieetc.) a day or two before ithits the mainstreamnews wires.I do this by following
not only what people areclickingon but why they are clickingon it. Whatis grabbingtheir attention? I understand the
clickability of a story allowing myself to identify what will trend before itis trending.
As a multiplatformproducer I understand stories must be presented differently in all forms of media. I also understand a story
that does well on social media may not go over as well on air.I use these links between each form of media to pull one
avenue’s audience to the other. I use the on air media to push to our website, our website to push to on air,and our social
media to push to both.
Graphic Policy Change: WJRT
Goal: Advance our on air product by grabbing the attention of sidetracked viewers
Role: Producer, Developer
When I firstarrived to ABC12 the station policy required “locator graphics”on all video. This means viewers look atthe screen
and see “Flint” on the lower portion of the picture. Through my inputon a redesign this changed. Now when viewers look up
they see “Teen Shot in Flint.”The idea is thatTV viewers rarely sitdown to focus on the screen. The new generation of viewers
is often sidetracked by phones, conversations,or by their busy routines. When they look at the screen and see “Flint” they
have littlemotivation to pay attention but if a distracted viewers looks up to see “Teen Shot in Flint”they are more likely to
focus in.
Student Consulting: MAB
Goal: Aid students in College selection and application
Role: Mentor, Student Advisor
Delivered presentations, advised small group discussions, and provided one-on-one support for high school students
consideringan education in broadcasting.I helped students understand the difference between universities and tech schools.I
advised them on how to apply for financial aid and scholarships.I continued to offer guidancein courseselection, internship
applications, and studies management for several students.
