Italian Study Abroad
2015 | January - May
In January 2015 I studied abroad in Orvieto, Italy
for four months. The program was led by K-State
faculty in conjunction with Centro Studi Citta in
Orvieto. Coursework consisted of history of art
and culture, Italian language, an architecture
seminar, and studio. Field trips were arranged
every Friday and paralleled with each week’s
lectures.
Studying abroad not only provided me with the
experience of learning first hand from buildings
that have shaped the history of architecture but
it also exposed me to a different culture. One of
the biggest lessons I learned from the Italians is
how important it is to slow down and enjoy what
surrounds you. I also appreciate the craft and
care that Italians put into their products.

Trattoria del Jazz
Study Abroad – Orvieto, Italy
Located in Orvieto Italy, Trattoria del Jazz is
an eatery that celebrates art in a variety of
forms. The concept and inspiration was derived
from the space’s current use as an artist’s
studio. The restaurant places an emphasis
on presentation and the creative process of
cooking. The menu consists of traditional
Italian food presented in an artful manner.
Transparency between the kitchen and dining
room allows guests to witness the mastery of
the chefs at work. Art is also reflected in the
paintings displayed throughout. The flexibility of
the furniture allows for a stage to be placed up
front for musicians to perform at.
Programs Used: Sketch-up, hand rendering

Retail and Restaurant
This is a restaurant and retail space located
in San Francisco, CA. The store sells athletic
apparel and equipment specifically geared
toward runners. The building is nearly 6500
square feet and contains a mezzanine level,
where the café is located. The main feature
connecting the restaurant and retail space is
a smoothie bar, which is wrapped by a grand
staircase.
The conceptual design for the project is derived
from an athletic shoe, particularly a running
shoe. The essence of the space reflects
the makeup of the shoe through the use of
structures that wrap and enclose. Organic
contour’s, fluid forms, and the use of the ‘C’
shape are used throughout to define spaces
and create elements.

Next University
Steelcase National Competition
The design requirements included creating
a multi-functional space for students at Next
University using Steelcase furniture. The
competition provided floor plans of an existing
building and a set of requirements for what
could and could not be adapted.
The concept for this project was a museum.
Museums provide an opportunity for people to
increase their knowledge on a subject through
a sequential experience. They also present
information in a variety of ways in order to
enlighten visitors. The act of enlightening can
be translated to removing darkness. The idea
of moving from the dark to light represents the
progression of learning and gaining knowledge.
As one moves through the space, it begins to
open up and become brighter, symbolizing the
acquisition of knowledge.
Throughout the space there are a number of
display areas for student work, faculty research,
and announcements. This informs the general
public on the projects going on in the college.

S.A.V.E. – Wellness Center
The Soldier Agricultural Vocation Education
or S.A.V.E. program is a rehabilitation facility
for wounded soldiers returning from the Iraq
and Afghanistan wars. The program is a
yearlong training process that will service both
the soldiers and their families. The College of
Architecture at Kansas State played an influential
role in helping master plan the site, and in
designing each of the buildings on the campus.
The wellness center is a 19,800 square foot
building that is designed to restore the soldier’s
sense of purpose through healing of the mind
and body. The wellness center contains a mental
health clinic, physical and occupational therapy,
and a rec center. However, this project focuses
only on the physical healing spaces.
The concept for the building is growth. The
building utilizes various architectural features to
reveal the spaces beyond. This transparency is
meant to increase awareness and reduce the
stigma that can come with receiving some of the
therapies.

Credenza
Greet is an entryway credenza that stands thirty-six
inches tall and forty-one inches wide. The proportions
were derived from a 1’x1’x’1 cube. The thickness of
each walnut panel establishes a hierarchy. The piece
is characterized by the exposed dovetail joints. The
joints not only add a level of detail but they also allude
to the construction method of the piece. Each joint
was created on a CNC router and designed to taper.
The tapering allows each panel to be set and taken
apart easily and be constructed without any additional
hardware or supports.

Color + Couture
“ Union Station brought people to Kansas City
and continues to be a landmark;
it’s bold statement remains in an
ever-transforming city.”
Color and Couture is a fashion show event
sponsored by IIDA. This competition pairs
design firms and design education programs
up with various manufacturing representatives.
The representatives then supply’s the teams
with their garment materials.
This year’s competition celebrated famous
architecture around Kansas City. Each team
was assigned a building for inspiration. Kansas
State University’s building was Union Station.
Built in the early 1900’s this landmark reflects
the art deco style of the times. The garment
was designed to embrace the strong masculine
form, as well as highlight how the building has
stood the test of time.

OFS Brands
Overbed Table
This project is currently a partnership with
OFS brands to develop a new design of the
overbed table. The project showcases an
understanding of designing on contract level.
The course utilizes evidence based design
through research of the users, market, settings,
materials, and production process.
The overbed table is an overlooked item that
has been around for years. Many issues reside
with it regarding its mobility, cleanability and
user-accessibility. This project seeks to create
an intuitive, sleek form that challenges the
current design and appeals to all users.

Design a workplace

Encourage activity in the
workplace
As companies become more aware of the
mental and physical health issues residing in
the workplace they are seeking ways to improve
wellbeing. The design of the office can be one
of the ways health is addressed at work. Health
in the workplace is defined as a physical and
psychological state that promotes productivity,
activity, and fulfillment.
Through research, a collection of design
strategies will be developed that promote
physical and mental wellbeing. Each strategy
will be presented in a kit of parts that can be
implemented independently as needed. Taking
from this kit of parts, strategies will be used to
redesign Meer’s Advertising agency. This firm in
Kansas City, MO will be the model for improving
health in the workplace.
