INTRODUCTION
Stress solutions are those therapies and physical exercises
that can be built into a stress management programme as
part of a long-term stress relief strategy. Many of them,
such as Yeun Chun, yoga and T'ai Chi, have their origins in
cultures where stress is not as pandemic as it is in the West.
Some have been known and practised for thousands of
years, a testimony to their value and effect. In this unit, we
look at twelve of the most effective of these stress
solutions.

MASSAGE
Origins: Massage is a centuries-old technique for smoothing
away tension. It relaxes the body, aids circulation, gets rid of
toxic waste, tones the skin and stimulates the natural flow
of blood.
What it is: There are four types of massage:
effleurage which is slow rhythmic stroking
friction which is circular pressure movements
percussion or drumming which uses the sides of the hands
petrissage which is like kneading dough.
Used for: Research shows that babies who are fondled in
infancy have a greater increase in body weight, are more
active, less fearful, resist stress more effectively and have a
greater immunity to illness than those brought up without
the fondling experience.

YEUN CHUN
Origins: The movements of Yeun Chun were invented by
Hua T'o, a physician of the Tang dynasty. He based them on
the graceful unrestricted movements of animals and birds,
believing that these were far more health-enhancing that
the inhibited movements people so often adopted.
What it is: The name Yeun Chun means Eternal Spring. It is
both a relaxation and body toning exercise, similar to T'ai
Chi.
Used for: The important thing to remember about Yeun
Chun is that all the movements should be performed very
very slowly almost to the point where an observer might
think you weren't moving at all. Yeun Chun will induce a
feeling of deep relaxation at any time of day or night. It is
particularly effective just before bedtime.

T'AI CHI CHUAN
Origins: There have been many different forms of T'ai Chi,
some as old as 3000 years, some as recent as the last
century. Nobody knows with certainty how T'ai Chi began.
One story relates how the founder of the art, Chang San-
feng, a Taoist priest, had a dream in which he saw a snake
and crane fighting over a morsel of food. Their beauty and
grace inspired him to re-create the movements for himself.
What it is: The literal translation of T'ai Chi Chuan is
"supreme ultimate fist" but it is more often called "moving
meditation". It uses movements that are linked together in a
continuous flow, slowly and smoothly, with precise postural
alignment. During practice the mind is focused. This is
coupled with a deep calm breathing pattern.
Used for: T'ai Chi Chuan accords with the principles of
traditional Chinese medicine and is beneficial in the
treatment of chronic disease and recovery from injuries.

ACUPRESSURE
Origins: Acupressure is an Oriental massage system that has
been practised for over 3000 years in China and Japan. It is
still popular throughout the East where it is also known as
Shin Tao, Jin Shin Do and Shiatsu.
What it is: This type of therapy is similar to acupuncture but
uses finger pressure instead of needles. The principle is that
finger pressure on specific points of the body stimulates or
sedates the flow of vital energy ("chi") along channels or
meridians. These influence all the major organs of the body.
Used for: Although you can apply it to yourself, Acupressure
is best performed on you by someone else. Pressure can be
applied to specific points by thumb, forefinger or middle
finger, using a clockwise direction for at least 20 seconds.
Acupressure has brought remedies for arthritis, colds,
headache, nausea and travel sickness.

YOGA
Origins: Nobody knows for sure how old this Indian system
of exercise and meditation is, except that illustrations of
Yoga have been found dating as far back as 2000BC. It was
once only practised by Indian hermits but is now popular all
over the world.
What it is: The word "yoga" means "union" and in the
widest sense means being at one, at total ease with oneself
and everything in creation. It is a holistic training system
combining exercise, positions or "asanas", breathing,
relaxation, meditation and exercises, or "pranayama". There
are also sexual, karmic and lifestyle yoga practices.
Used for: Yoga claims to bring relief from many ailments and
diseases including alcoholism, heart disease, menopausal
disorders and panic attacks. It has been used to prepare
expectant mothers for childbirth and to cure smoking.

AIKIDO
Origins: Ki Aikido is a Japanese martial art which focuses on
the spiritual development and awareness of the individual.
"Ki" is Japanese for "life force", similar to the Chinese "chi",
"ai" means union and "do" means path or way.
What it is: Although a martial art, aikido does not require or
use physical strength, since the emphasis is on finding ways
to use an aggressor's own force against them. Students of
aikido practice using great concentration on their own
energy and learn techniques which will harness the
momentum and force of an attack for their own defence.
Used for: Aikido is a form of self-defence but its aim is for
the practitioner to use their skill and awareness to avoid all
forms of combat.

AROMATHERAPY
Origins: The first evidence of using distilled essences was
recorded in the 11th century in Europe. The modern
concept of aromatherapy was developed by Marguerite
Maury, an Austrian biochemist, in the middle of the 20th
century.
What it is: Aromatherapy is any treatment using the
aromatic oils obtained from a variety of plants. They may be
used in massage but can also be ingested, inhaled, used in
bath water, absorbed through the skin or used as a burning
essence. The aromatic properties are believed to contain
medicinal properties and a natural healing power.
Used for: Aromatherapists use up to 130 oils for a wide
variety of treatments ranging from agoraphobia to warts.
For example, oils like orange blossom soothe; lemon grass
tones up the body; and rosemary invigorates and re-freshes.

FOOT REFLEXOLOGY
Origins: The ancient pressure point therapy of Foot
Reflexology is thought to have been brought to the West in
the early 1900's by Dr William Fitzgerald. He originally called
his system "zone therapy" since the therapy concentrated
on 10 zones or energy channels of the body. Later it became
confined to the feet.
What it is: Reflexology is a foot massage method that
applies deep, steady rolling movements to reflex areas of
the soles of the feet that are said to mirror or reflect specific
parts of the body such as the neck, kidney, spleen and so on.
Tenderness indicates ailments in that part of the body. The
purpose of the massage is to unblock the channels and start
the natural flow again.
Used for: Reflexology claims to be effective for a wide range
of joint, muscular and organ problems.

THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Origins: This technique originated with the discovery by
Australian actor, Frederick Mathis Alexander, that many
health problems are due to poor posture. Alexander
observed that children below the age of 3 move in a
perfectly balanced and co-ordinated way but as they grow
up learn poor postural habits. Alexander introduced his
techniques to London in 1904.
What it is: The Alexander technique re-trains the way we
use our bodies when standing, sitting, walking or working at
different heights. Poor posture is corrected by instruction
and gentle manipulation. This results in less strain, improved
breathing and better voice production.
Used for: After a course of Alexander technique, some
people report feeling remarkably changed and physically
lighter. The resulting posture can change the way people
feel about themselves.

SHIATSU
Origins: Shiatsu is a pressure-point massage therapy that
has been practised for centuries in Japan.
What it is: Shiatsu is Japanese for "finger-pressure". Like
acupressure, of which it is a form, it uses fingers, hands,
elbows, forearms and even knees and feet to apply pressure
to hundreds of surface points along the body's energy
paths, or meridians.
Used for: By either calming or stimulating the pressure
points, shiatsu re-balances the body's electro-magnetic
forces and releases a flow of energy to enhance a person's
stamina and natural healing powers.

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES
Origins: The Bach Flower remedies consist of 38 remedies
discovered by Dr Edward Bach, an orthodox British doctor
who became convinced that natural plant cures exist for
every human ailment. The remedies were first made from
dew that collected on flowers and later by floating freshly-
picked flowers on spring water.
What it is: The aim of the system is to correct emotional
imbalances which cause stress and illness. A practitioner will
first decide what type of person you are emotionally, eg
apathetic, indecisive, impatient, and then select an
appropriate remedy.
Used for: Among the range of remedies are: crab apples
flowers which ease shame; mimulus flowers for people who
are afraid and wallow in self-pity; and the "rescue remedy"
for people in shock which consists of a combination of
cherry plum, impatiens, clematis and Star of Bethlehem.

FLOATATION THEORY
Origins: Floatation theory stems from the ideas of an
American doctor, Dr John Lilly, who was interested in the
possibilities of isolating the brain from the five senses of
hearing, smell, sight, taste and touch. The first floatation
tank was used in the 1970’s.
What it is: The person being treated lies in an isolated tank
of salt and mineral water in total or semi-darkness. This
enables him or her to become fully relaxed and aware of
their own inner state of mind and to use this knowledge to
make lifestyle changes.
Used for: It is claimed that floatation theory is valuable in
helping people understand what is needed to deal with such
stress-related problems as tension, smoking, anxiety and
alcoholism.
