Insights from "Leadership Wisdom from the Monk who sold his Ferrari" by Robin Sharma.
Quote from the introductory session "Ideas are the commodity of success and the most effective people are the most effective thinkers"
3. PETER FRANKLIN
• His father came to USA as an immigrant and worked 80 hours a
week at a factory to support his family.
• He stressed the importance of knowledge and education, and
Peter worked very hard to progress.
• Peter was very successful in school and college – academically,
athletically and socially; he got scholarships and was accepted
into one of the country’s best tech firms – Digitech Software
Strategies
• At Digitech, Peter excelled in everything and was considered by
many as the next CEO of the company
BUT…
4. PETER FRANKLIN
• He didn’t get along with his current CEO, who seemed to see
him as a threat.
• Peter had a very bad temper
• His weakness was leadership – didn’t build relationships or
cultivate loyalty.
• He was shortsighted – like a man on a sinking ship.
5. PETER FRANKLIN: THE COMEBACK
• He received a call from a college friend who was setting up his
own software firm – be CEO of the company
• “Nothing can defeat you unless you defeat yourself”
• Set up GlobalView Software solutions – they had a great
software concept and the market picked it up eagerly
• In one year, they were features as one of the country’s fastest
growing companies by Business Success
• Became a $2 billion company with 2,500 employees in an
international-scale office with swimming pools, ampthitheatres
BUT…
6. PETER FRANKLIN: THE SLOW DECLINE
• He was still very bad-tempered, and he had no loyalty or
commitment from his employees; they listened to him because
they had to – out of fear.
• Morale was low – profits more than people – not enough
resources - too much change within the bureaucracy
• Little Trust, Low Productivity, Least Creativity
• GlobalView lost market share and was heading for their first
loss.
• People were not innovative, offices disorganized, poor
attendance of events, no teamwork, conflict
• Everyone blamed Peter Franklin and his lack of leadership.
8. JULIAN MANTLE
• Highly successful lawyer – one of the finest in the country
• Good family background, top of his class at Harvard
• Mansion, Private Jet, Summer Home, FERRARI
• Peter’s golf partner – gifted a golden golf ball for his 50th
birthday
• Workaholic – no sleep – reckless drinking and feasting – fights –
overweight – sick - lost his sense of humor
• He suffered a massive heart attack & collapsed in the courtroom
while he was arguing a case
• Sold all his possessions and vanished.
10. MONDAY MORNING MEETING
• Top programmers going to work in smaller companies
• Growing distrust and resentment between management and non-management
• No teamwork
• Previously, programmers & managers did the manual work during deadlines
12. THE MONK IN THE ROSE GARDEN
• Strength
• Serenity
• Unconcerned
• Wisdom
“I AM HERE TO HELP YOU
REINVENT YOUR LEADERSHIP,
PETER”
13. THE MIRACULOUS TRANSFORMATION OF A CORPORATE
WARRIOR
“I’ve discovered information that will return you and your business
to the heights of success you once enjoyed. I’ve been given
knowledge that will lead you to certain market leadership. I’ve
learned lessons that will show you how to have the most loyal,
dedicated and inspired employees of any company in your field”
Improve you → Morale/Productivity → commitment/creativity → teamwork → profits
14. “WHAT DID YOU DO?”
• Cut ties to his former life – sold house, sold his FERRARI
• “Cannot go sailing while the boat is tied to the dock”
• Went searching for the Great Sages of Sivana – teachers in the Himalayas, who have developed an
extraordinary system reached remarkable levels of personal & professional fulfillment
• Started climbing the Himalayas by himself and kept at it until one day he found a monk
• The monk tried to run away at first but Julian caught him and explained his situation and the monk
agreed to teach him, under one condition – SPREAD THE MESSAGE
16. “No matter whatever happens to you, Peter, no one will be
able to take away your education. Knowledge will always be
your best friend, no matter where you go or what you do.”
“Reflection and contemplation are among the most
important of all business skills. I’ve since realized that in the
information-led world we live in, ideas are the commodity of
success and the most effective people are the most effective
thinkers.”
- QUOTES -
17. “Leaders of every sort are struggling to cope with the great
transition and tremendous turbulence that this new era of
business has brought with it. Competition has never been so
firece, the rate of change has never been so high and morale
is plummeting as people struggle to find solid ground. With
all this upheaval, people no longer have a sense of loyalty to
their companies. They lack any connection to their work.
Sadly, too many men and women fail to attach any meaning
to what they do and hat, in turn, has led to lack of fulfillment
in their lives.”
