Senior Presentation

Editor's Notes

  1. Hello everyone, I want to start off by saying thank you all for the past and present support that you continue to show myself and my peers and also for taking time out of your day to be here for our senior presentations I am Emily Archer as MANY of you know I am an award winning, visionary, and dedicated student artist from Indiana who continuously pushes the boundaries (and peoples buttons) for the benefit of my work and future To kick this presentation off, I would love to start with a little bit about my journey here at Adrian College
  2. Many know me as an outgoing person, but what some don’t see is after an exhausting day of being around people, I enjoy my alone time re-centering my world and finding my focus As a freshmen at Adrian College, I had my life planned to a T, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and no one could change my mind Until I was convinced to change my major My major was changed but I wasn’t very open to any medium except a pencil and some paper It was until I found ceramics, that I started to explore new mediums I finally decided that multimedia was the “medium” I needed in my life
  3. As I said, I wasn’t very open to new mediums so my work was strictly pencil on paper It dealt with a variety of 2D works on paper that I did to fulfill assignments and nothing more but we won’t waste your time with those because the work that was made during my Junior year was really what changed everything for me
  4. These three works were something I had done in my first abstract painting class when I realized that realism wasn’t really my forte like I had thought I started to wonder what abstract work really was like but I knew I had to jump through the realistic hoops before I could explore abstraction These works really opened me up to color and texture by exploring paint-mixing and different ways of applying it Of course these were only one step to getting to where I am today
  5. This ceramic work was the piece that opened my eyes to what I could do with ceramics and abstraction This was the first time I had ever made anything on the wheel that wasn’t functional or meant to just be decoration on a table By being able to easily manipulate the clay just like I could with paint, excited me
  6. As I really loved the nonfunctional aspect of the piece before, I found a different way to make functional looking work NOT functional by the use of alternative finishes By adding a finish like the one shown on this piece, I took an extremely untraditional route to making my work non-functional This was also the first time I had ever spray painted ceramics which lead to future ideas within my work that you will see later on
  7. Although my past work is very important to where I am now, I think my influences play an even bigger role in what I do today Not only have many of you all inspired and influenced my artistic choices, but many people I haven’t even met have as well While some of us do have original ideas, we don’t come up with the foundation of those ideas without influences of people or things
  8. Robert Rauschenberg was one of the first artists that helped me explore abstract art He was the one that showed me that he was able to do these grand pop culture things that broke the norm and looked different than the typical work of his time His work stands out to me visually and His pieces stand out to me conceptually because his work explains “the move between these realms in constant dialogue with the viewers and the surrounding world” which is what my work deals with in a way
  9. This piece is one of his larger pieces that the viewers are able to interact with and walk through to be able to experience the piece fully This piece inspired me to keep pushing the interactiveness of my art within my concept It also goes along with the concept of the viewer having a dialogue with the work rather than looking at it for its aesthetics
  10. This is the first installation/ small body of work of 4 artists within my presentation that I wanted to show Not only do these people that I am going to talk about, inspire and influence me, but so does the way that they display their work within a gallery In my work I want to actually use the space rather than just hang things on the wall I enjoy the larger things that catch your attention and and use the space to its fullest potential
  11. Robert Rauschenberg, a male artist pushed the boundaries just as many male artists did back in the days But I connect with Yayoi Kusama as a female artist myself As she is becoming more of a well known, mainstream contemporary artist now and is still alive, she is considered historical for her past works that really broke the norm of the art world and especially since she was a woman Her highly loved infinity rooms mimic the chaos within my work and make you have a feeling of being overwhelmed I have had the privilege of seeing and being a part of two of her pieces and I can attest that they are indeed overwhelming but amazing
  12. The early work of Kusama is mainly 2D Her work is considered to be “obliteration” “repetitive” and “consuming” Her past work isn’t really visually appealing to me as much as her current work is but her concepts are similar to mine through her repetitiveness, concepts, and compositions
  13. Her newer work or her infinity rooms are extremely compelling When you walk in to one of these rooms you feel as if the world around you stops and its just you and the artwork in one room having a conversation I really see her work as something incredible that brings viewers in and makes them a part of the art I feel that involvement of the community is really important to your work so it can be understood
  14. Now, just as some historical people have influenced me, I really look to contemporary artists for their ideas in a 21st century technological world Adela Andea is one of the first artist that caught my eye with her use of light Adelas work for me is more for the visual aspect
  15. This piece is one of her stand alone pieces that caught my attention because it broke the norms of a classic traditional sculpture It is pieced together very intricately and has a few areas of rest within the negative space and the glow on the wall from the light also becomes part of the work
  16. I love that she utilizes the space that is given to her to create her huge installations that make a statement when you walk in the room There are so many different focal points but having the bare space gives her work a huge advantage to be exactly what she sees it to be It seems like she doesn’t have much control in her work since things seem chaotic but she does have a sense of order through the individual standing pieces and how carefully placed her lights are
  17. As Adela is pretty dope if I do say so myself, I needed an artist that wasn’t all just 3D When I started looking for artists that could inspire my next step of work, I found Jim Condron I reached out to him and asked him more questions about his work and he was able to give me insight on his conceptual ideas His titles that are taken from literature, inspire my titles and how they tell a story for the work Within his work he explains that he tries to use objects that "without context mean nothing to the viewer”, he gives his objects a whole new meaning
  18. Adding objects on the panel have inspired some of my work to be more than just a 2D surface By using found objects on my work it gives it a whole new element that becomes 3D from a 2D work
  19. Jim also uses his work throughout the space to create an immersive experience with his work He has stuff displayed higher and lower than a normal view of your typical piece so it forces the viewers to move around to see all of the work as a whole but also as stand alone pieces
  20. People aren’t the only thing that inspire me By having SOCIAL MEDIA and the internet, it is nearly impossible to not discover at least one new artist a day, but not only do you discover new artists, you discover new concepts, ideas, and things The NEON LIGHTS are the element the delicate glow that is representative of myself I am drawn to STREET ART and GRAFFITI by the colors, layers, and use of spray paint on different surfaces INSTALLATION ART and INTERACTIVE ART are also one of my favorite things because you are able to become involved in the work and make a connection within the space TIMES SQUARE is a recent inspiration for me, as I have not been there, the typical city scene is overwhelming with the lights, people, and things that move to create crazy stimulation within a persons mind
  21. These influences bring me full circle to my current work Because of those influences, not only have I adopted their concepts but I have also adopted their aesthetic choices within my work as well Much of my current work deals with the constant oscillation between being an introvert and an extrovert and changing my personality based on the group of people I am with at the time to keep up with the daily chaos of life My aesthetic choices deal with finding the order within the chaos by choosing some things and letting others just happen by a process based response
  22. With my work being so much about the order within the chaos, finding a way to show this was difficult The chaos shows with the nontraditional finish and the control is found within my form I used repetitive stencils, different kinds of paint and scratching methods to create different types of visual textures This piece is colorful and different which is how I draw my viewers in to learn more
  23. This piece is similar to the one that was just shown I used the same type of finish with the same control of the form to make you feel uneasy or overwhelmed In the air of the surrounding atmosphere, the fuzz is constantly moving drawing your eye up to the top of the piece
  24. This piece, a more 2D but not completely 2D, also tries to evoke an emotion of being overwhelmed Through the colors as well as using the found mixed media objects I tried to create an anxiety felt within the work By using the unconventional materials I hope that the viewer feels uncomfortable in a way but also makes them stay and ask the question why?
  25. DOUBLE CLICK TO START VID After creating so many things that were colorful and overwhelming through still objects, I wanted to create a more real sense of being overwhelmed by being forced to look at it since it moves Between becoming part of yourself (the me) and part of the world (the we) you are expected to fit in to these molds These all move differently as some stay still and it causes the eye to have three focal points rather than one which conflicts you to wonder where to look exactly Using the engineering and wiring part of my artwork, helped me push it further to other means of visual play which is what caused me to explore my fake neon work
  26. Lights are something I wanted to explore since they tend to draw people in Neon lights have always been so cool to me, they look like a line of glowing light that are used for signs and those signs typically draw people in Since I knew that creating real neon at Adrian wasn’t possible by any means, and to get it made was way out of my price range, I decided to find something that acted like neon but was more affordable, accessible, and easier to use I found E-Wire that gave the illusion of real neon
  27. I, like many others in the art world in general have some strengths and weaknesses The weaknesses of my work to be completely honest with myself and you all, include craftsmanship and taking the time to actually perfect everything I create rather than just being okay with it Sometimes I also choose to use things that may not have a specific meaning to me but only to use it for aesthetic choices to make something exactly how I want it to look The Strengths of my work include how expressive and experimental I am I’m not afraid to take a chance and take those risks that may push a piece so over the edge that it ruins it
  28. Because I am not afraid to work in my projects and mess them up a little, it has allowed me to work on many things at once to really explore what I want to do with my work for the rest of my life The future of my work includes plans to create things much larger and continue to push my concepts to be something more I want to continue using clay to create controlled forms with unconventional finishes And I want to keep expressing that sense of being overwhelmed by creating work that is interactive and has a lot going on through lights and movement
  29. Not only does my work hopefully have a future, but I do as well I am currently a part of the Michigan Collegiate Exhibition for the second year in a row, and am also giving a presentation at Ribbons of Excellence for the second year in a row too I am very excited to graduate in May with my BFA and a minor in Art History I am going to continue making art with my studio at home and any future studios, workshops, and classes I become a part of I am going to continue using my social media to keep my personal branding alive I have applied to 6 graduate schools for ceramics and am awaiting answers to be enrolled next Fall
