1909 – 1922
On March 25, 1909, 10 people had the idea for a museum in Kenya when they met at the home
of the then Governor, F.J. Jackson, to discuss starting a Natural History Society for East Africa.
Making scientific archives of natural history specimens was one of the first efforts once it was
founded. As there was a need for sure to store and display them. The national museum of Kenya
was the answer.
On August 16th, 1910, a 30-by-25-foot building that was built close to the Provincial
Commissioner's office was occupied. Mr. T.J. Anderson served as the initial curator. The
Governor selected a block of land on Kirk Road for a museum on August 29th, 1910. In 1922,
Governor Sir Edward Northey opened it.
1922 – 1930
Where the NNM is situated, on Ainsworth Hill (now Museum Hill), a new location was chosen.
In honor of the late Governor Richard Corydon, a former governor of Kenya and avid supporter
of the Uganda Natural History Society, it was given the name Coryndon Memorial Museum.
Governor Sir Edward Gregg gave this museum its official opening on September 22, 1930, and
Dr. Van G.L. Someren served as its curator.

1930 -1965
Under the direction of Dr. R.H. Carcussion, the museum changed its name from Coryndon
Memorial Museum to National Museums in December 1964. It was done to reflect Kenya's new
position as a sovereign nation. A board of trustees was set up with Mr. R.E. Leakey serving as
the director and Sir Ferdinand Cavendish Bentinck as the board's chairman.
1965 -2017
The Museum shut its doors to visitors on October 15th, 2005 to undergo a three-year, vital repair
and extension project. Given that the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is in charge of over 26
museums, locations, and monuments, the new name focuses on the museum's position as a
premier facility.
Since the NNM is its flagship museum and was recognized as a research institution in 2017—the
first time in its 107-year history—all of its research, both past and present, is managed from this
location.

(fossils), and research output.
A small fragment of a hominid skull was discovered by Kamoya Kimeu in August 1984 near
Nariokotome, on the western shore of Lake Turkana, on a dry river bank. Being an expert fossil
hunter, he was able to identify it since it was a little bit bright in color than the nearby black lava
