Assignment 1: Draft Paper
This week I was introduced to electronic portfolios through different videos and
readings. An electronic portfolio in my own words is the conclusion of work overtime
presented electronically through documents, videos, images, etc. Electronic portfolios
are used today to record growth and showcase personal or professional development to
a targeted audience. I plan to use electronic portfolios to display the things I am
passionate about and to manifest my journey to others.
Electronic portfolios can be used for both professional and personal purposes. For
example, I am a college basketball coach at Western Oregon University and coaching
at the college level can be extremely competitive. Having a degree is important in order
to coach at the collegiate level; however, where one obtained their degree and what
they chose to study is trivial. Many argue that the key to coaching at the collegiate level
boils down to who you know. Building relationships and networking can give an
advantage in the coaching world. I can use electronic portfolios to showcase what I
have accomplished as a former college player and as a college coach through the use
2. of videos, images, and by displaying a list of my personal and team accolades. This can
provide an opportunity to separate myself from other coaches. In many careers today a
degree just isn’t enough. In the Employment Context video, a statistic that stood out is
that 78% of jobs will consider any major which increases the competition and requires
applicants to seek different ways to be unique.
In my free time I love challenging myself to learn new skills and I’m constantly setting
different goals for myself. Applying what I’ve learned about electronic portfolios for
personal purposes is what excites me most. In the ted talk by Helen Barrett, the focus
on intrinsic motivation and the idea of mastery is what I resonated most with. “True
mastery is not possible without fun.” this is an idea I agree with and what I try to remind
myself when attempting to learn a new skill. I taught myself to play the piano back in
2015, relearned the alto saxophone in 2017 after graduating college and also taught
myself how to play guitar in 2017 as well. I enjoy lifting weights, cooking, and solving
puzzles such as the Rubik’s cube. The one thing each of my hobbies have in common
is that they all require a process of learning and growth to get the product which is the
end result. I’m interested in creating an electronic portfolio to showcase my journey in
the things I am passionate about. My hobbies are what makes me unique and what
separates me from others.
It is important to be honest and genuine when creating an electronic portfolio. It’s the
perfect opportunity to break the script and be yourself. An electronic portfolio is not just
3. a resume, a blog, or an employment oriented service such as Linkedin. It is a cross
between the use of artifacts, electronics, and experiences to reflect upon.
