2. Question 1: How old are you?
From these results it’s clear the age
range that the target audience of my
music magazine should be, in order
for it to be more successful.
The results show that 22 people aged
17-20 answered the survey, and only 2
aged 41+. This suggests the survey
appealed to a younger audience, and
therefore suggesting that music
magazines also, are more popular
amongst a younger audience.
3. Question 2: What is your gender?
Although more females answered the
survey than males, there still isn’t such a
large difference in numbers. This shows
that the magazine I create could be
suited for both a male and female
audience and it would do just as well.
4. Question 3: What genre of
music do you prefer?
These results show that the most
popular genre of music amongst
young people is Indie/Alternative, as
selected by 28% of the survey
participants. The second most
popular was R&B, with 24% of
people preferring it.
These results make it easier to decide on a genre to base my
magazine around in order for it to be more popular and successful.
In this case, it will be Indie/Alternative.
5. Question 4: How often do you
purchase music magazines?
These results show that not many
people purchase music magazines
very often anymore. 19 people said
they don’t read them, and only 6
people said they buy them monthly.
This shows how much social media
has an impact – People can get news
on celebrities via their social networks
such as Twitter, Facebook and
Instagram. They can access music
online, and they can find out about
upcoming tours and artists on the
internet too.
6. Question 5: Would you rather
read about local bands and
artists or ‘widely known’ bands
and artists?
These results show that people were
more interested in world-wide bands
and artists than bands and artists from
their own hometown.
This proves that world-wide bands and
artists get a lot of publicity with the
press, whereas local bands and artists
often have to work hard for their own
publicity.
7. Question 6: What attracts you
to a music magazine most?
This question and it’s results show
that Celebrities attracted more
people to magazines as 34.62% of
respondents selected this option.
30.77% of people were interested in
articles and interviews which
suggests people are interested in
the personal lives of artists as well
as their music.
3 people also liked competitions in
music magazines, as they have the
opportunity to gain something out
of it.
8. Question 7: What would you
rather see in a music magazine?
One of my questions was; What would
you rather see in a music magazines?
The majority of the responses were
‘Upcoming bands and artists from
around the world’, which suggests that
people are looking for new music to
listen to, similar to the music they like
now.
6 people were interested in reading
about local bands and artists, such as
The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Oasis etc.
5 people said ‘celebrity based articles’
which suggests they are interested in
reading about celebrity gossip.
9. Question 8: What kind of
information would you rather
see in a music magazine?
I asked people what information
they would like to see in a music
magazine and the responses
were as shown.
Most people wanted to know
about upcoming tours for their
favourite artists and then the
next most popular was
Interviews, which shows people
are interested in what artists
have to say, as well as the music
they release.
Very few people were interested
in celebrity gossip.
10. Question 9: How much would
you be willing to spend (at
most) on a music magazine?
Most people agree that £2 is a
reasonable price for a music
magazine, considering what you get in
it.
3 people were only willing to pay £1
at most for a music magazine which
suggests that magazines don’t really
interest them as much as other
respondents.
On the other hand, 15.38% said they
would be willing to pay £4 or more for
a music magazine, which suggests
they enjoy reading music magazines
and think it’s worth paying so much
for all that you get with it.
11. Question 10: How do you listen
to music?
This question shows how much
social media/technology plays
a part in the music industry.
100% of the respondents said
they listen to music using apps
such as Spotify, Soundcloud,
Apple Music etc.
Other ways they listened to
music included TV music
channels, their computer, the
internet and the radio.
Only 5 people listen to music
through CD’s/Vinyls, which
shows how important the
internet is in order for any
artist to do well.
